now how do I get rid of the smell? :scared1:

We had the horrible smell of a dead mouse in our basement yesterday. I found it and DH took care of it when he got home but I can't get rid of the smell. I've sprayed 1/2 can of Oust directly on the cement floor where it was plus in the air both yesterday and today.

Of course the thing had to die in the trap by the air conditioner so the smell is blowing through the entire house. Turning the air off is not an option since it's 90+ outside already today and expected to hit 100 with a heat index of about 110.

I have a few containers with coffee grounds in them down there.

Any ideas?

Sorry, meant to post this on the Community Board.

I don't have to many ideas of getting rid of the smell, but glad you got rid of the cause. Mice really freak me out. They say that charcoal you put in aquariums gets rid of smells. Could you pour bleach over the spot and maybe put an air freshener near the vent so it gets pulled through the house?
Hope it doesn't take long to get rid of the smell.

It's actually to take skunk smell out of your pet, but I have used it on other smelly things and it works

Mix together
- 1 quart peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid

You can double/quadruple the recipe to make 1/2 gallon - 1 gallon

"Do Not" try to bottle it or try to put it in a closed container. The
byproduct of the chemical reaction produced is oxygen and contained, the
stuff is explosive. Also, it should be used as soon as it's mixed up.
The reaction doesn't last long.

Since it's on a cement basement floor, I would probably scrub the area with the mixture and then wait about 10 -15 minutes and then rinse off the area with plain water.

Good luck. If this doesn't work you can also try washing the area with club soda.

You think that's bad.....imagine coming home after being away for a week to find a dead mouse in the kitchen, half rotted.....AND, it's summer, AND, since you were away you had turned off the A/C. This is the part were you say...FABULOUS!!!!!

Anyway, the smell will go away and shouldn't take too long.

Oh my, not a good smell at all. My friend had something die in her house and her husband bought something for that at Home Depot. The smell was soon gone! Good luck. :woohoo:

When I was growing up, we had indoor/outdoor cats who would bring in half living mice way too often. They would get in the wall and die. The smell will last a few days (maybe less for you since you got the mouse out) and then just go away.

I got really mad at your husband when I read your headline! I thought he got rid of Mickey - I was about ready to put together a Dis-mob!

Charcoal absorbes odors. You will need to replace the charcoal every day for it to be effective.
I would spray some frebreeze by the air conditioner.
