Here is the 2022 destash edition.

Like in years past each person can set their own goal and count items as the see fit. You can post a list of items that you have gotten rid of or just post the number of items that have left your possession.

This thread is to help each of us keep motivated by posting updates. Updates can be done on what ever time frame in meaningful to you weekly, monthly, quarterly, whatever.

The plan is simple just set a goal and work towards it! Hope to continue getting lots of people involved and updating

Hi! I’m going to try setting a goal for moving things we don’t need out of the house & my classroom. I did major cleaning/purging a few years ago, but it’s easy to slip back into my bad habits of saving things “just in case”.

My goal is to move things out of my life 40 times in 2022. I‘m not going to count the number of items, just the number of times I move stuff out. I’m going to count selling, giving to friends/Goodwill, bringing to the “free house”, etc. as moving it out of my life. I‘m not going to count it if I move stuff from my house into my classroom or my classroom to my house.

Yesterday I took stuff to Goodwill and stuff to the “free house”.

1/40 times of moving things. (That sounds weird. Any suggestions for a better way to phrase it?)

I think I'm going to assign an area a month. We moved in 2020 and got rid of so much stuff at that time. Now there are areas I need to reorganize and destash.

January-my closet/bedroom
February-upstairs room/office
March-paperwork
April-garden/garage/back porch
May-main living space
June-teacher stuff
July- DD's room-she may change rooms
August-college/apt stuff for DD/DS
September- pantry
October-photos
November-photos
December-holiday prep/attic

I'm getting in on this for 2022. Our house is overly cluttered and I'm tired of the anxiety from it. I already started yesterday, there is one part of the kitchen counter that is a catch-all and I completely cleared it. Most of it was just junk we held on to that we never used. The kitchen cabinets are this weekend. I figure I can do one specific section of the house every weekend. The garage may take SEVERAL weekends though lol.

Jumping in this year! My house has become the catch all for everyone else 😟. I started my own daycare, and between both of my parents moving recently, my grandmother trying to clear out her house, and everyone (with very good intentions!) of giving me ALL of their old toys/books/anything kid related, it’s far too stuffed.

My goal is to donate to Purple Heart once a month, preferably the “medium” category: 4-10 bags. I have a scheduled pick up for next week and so far I have 16 trash bags of stuff leaving my house!

I’m going to repeat a challenge I did successfully a few years ago-get rid of 2022 items, everything from a single sock to a car we need to sell counts :). To jump start that, I’m doing the Apartment Therapy January Cure.

1/3 8/2022
Thanks for mentioning that! I signed up and have enjoyed the short tasks each day.

I've seen these threads over the years and always scrolled on by, but today, I decided to stop and see what it was all about. I am so glad I did. I will be putting my house on the market next summer (2023) and, in preparation, I need to start getting rid of stuff I don't need or use. Hopefully this will keep me on track. 🤞

Thats our plan too. Been in this house 14 years and accumulated way too much stuff. Seriously considering moving into a two-bed apartment from a 4 bed house - need to get rid of a lot of stuff.

I've been decluttering steadily for 11 years. I have downsized house twice. I am looking to downsize one more time. I don't want to pay to move anything I don't really want.

Current clutter is:
  • photos
  • photo files
  • kitchen excess (small appliances with overlapping function)
  • a couple of uncomfortable IKEA chairs (will list on craigslist)
  • grown kids' toys and collectables
I enjoyed Marie Kondo's book on tidying up, especially when she talks about getting rid of gifts. What a freeing idea!

I also look to Youtube for inspiration.

We just bought a home and began moving in last month. As a large family + the grandparents we have a lot of clutter. I can proudly say that I have donated A LOT of goods! I've also tossed a lot as well, and feel great! Sadly not everyone in the house was as good about getting rid of things.

Donated: clothing, toys, kitchen goods and appliances, furniture, excess food, books, desk, bed frame/headboard,
Sold: bunk beds, set of four chairs, tv stand, chickens and ducks (although save them away for free), bearded dragon (SIL dumped him on us...we already had two plus other pets),
Trash: paper!!!!!!! Expired food from cabinets, random broken junk, flooring supplies from our remodel,

Debating over selling or donating: Doll furniture (excellent condition), tv cabinet, desk, display cabinets, hutch, antique sewing machine with stand,

I am in, again this year!

My number 1 goal is just to make my home more functional!
Somehow while touring this home, we didn't realize how lacking the closet space was, in functional areas.
Such as we don't have an entry closet, and with 5 people shoes, coats, backpacks .......
I did have DH add a hall linen closet, there was no linen closet....how?why? But I've yet go through the heaps of linens we have and set up the closet and donate the rest to an animal shelter.

My second biggest goal is to battle the things that come into our house!
DH is a huge impulse buyer just "because it was on clearance"........
We buy so many duplicates so what we already have because we can't find what we know we've bought, once it goes to the garage, it's lost.

I have major object permanence, once something is put "up" I don't even remember I have it, use it or look at it, so taking it slow and doing just one thing at a time will really help me clear the clutter and get things under control.

Wish me luck!

Ok, I’ll call this week one.

Successfully completed first week of Apartment Therapy January Cure.
Destash: 51/2022 items.

I have a weird definition of what is destashing. I count it if it’s something that has “taken residence” in the house. So new junk mail that I recycle doesn’t count but anything I recycle out of my long term piles of mail does. Veggies that have gone bad or food we use up doesn’t count but that old bottle of a condiment in the fridge that I toss does. Maybe makes no sense but there you go.

Got two and a half things crossed off the list over the weekend

1. Cleaned out the entryway shoe organizer, cleared out shoes the kids have outgrown about 14 pairs between the four of us.

2. Cleaned out a small cabinet in the formal dining room that had become a catch-all. Got rid of a grocery bag size of clutter and old junk

The half thing is we are still trying to figure out our ceiling paint color.......the neighbor had two samples for us to try, neither were a match, so it looks like were going to need to find a small spot to take a tiny piece of the ceiling down to take it to the paint store to match.

I do clothing purges 4 times a year-essentially when the seasons change. Some are lighter than others.
I also clean out my makeup vanity often, and actually just did the other day considering I got more reusable makeup wipes (magic eraser is the best) for Xmas so I got rid of what little non reusable ones I had left. Felt good.
For the fall and winter holidays later this year we are gonna purge as we put up.

While there will always be clutter, we are constantly getting rid of things so it never truly feels like we purge enough at any given time.
