I am getting the distinct feeling from talking to the people at DCL that they will not have any desserts I can safely eat. The situation is I am diabetic and deathly allergic the nutrasweet (Equal, aspartame)
I can eat plain regular ice cream and I can eat fruits except mango. So tell what kind of fruit selection do the seem to have on board.

I know they have bananas and strawberries at scoops and I believe oranges and grapes too. I am sure they would have many non sugar/non aspertime alternatives as many diabetics do cruise. Why not give them a call? Maybe they can do something in advance for you. I know you can order a no-salt/low salt menu so I would think they would help you out. They really do try to please and accomodate everyone!

I saw plenty of watermelon, cantalope, honeydew when I cruised in March. There was always a fruit salad available at evening meal, even if it was only on the kids menu (which you can order from freely).

I hope that helps.

I have already spoken with them and the are clueless really. They want me to wait and speak to the head server when I board. The person I spoke to doesn't seem to get that it that I might want to enjoy a dessert like everyone else.
I feel that I am being treated like a second class citizen because the woman from DCL had to call me through Relay Service since I don't understand well over a regula phone line unless it is a voice I am familiar with.

Lisa i am so sorry that you seem to be having a hard time but do trust me that your head sever will take care of you. I am allergic to all poulty including eggs., chicken broth, etc. I will die without medical intervention within 20 mins of having them. i told the head server and he made sure things were made to accomodate ME. Trust me Disney will take care of you.

I got a call back from DCL. All the sugar free desserts are made with nutrasweet. They will investigate Splenda but didn't sound particularly enthusiatic about finding anything with it. They can offer me plain fruit. I am very disappointed. It is hard enough to have multiple medial problems but when you get atitudes like this it makes it even harder.
AKL was able to completely accommodate me and the chef even thanked me for giving him the opportunity to learn about a new sugar free sweetener since most people don't mention it until the get to the restaurant. Now he has it on hand and can take care of them. He's the kind of Disney CM I expect.
I can bring my own sweets as long as the are prepacked and not homemade. That leaves a few candies and my sodas. I feel very deprived.

AKL seems to be amazingly willing to try and please their guests. Maybe you can email them or call and find out what they made and pass this along to your head server. I have found the people you deal with on the phone from DCL to be not nearly as helpful and nice as those actually on the ship. Hope it works out for you. Beth

Beth my concern is that if it is not address prior to embarkation day it cannot be addressed. At least not to my satistfaction. I really enjoy a dessert when I am out. Don't eat them at home. But if all they have on board are made with this product which is what I am told and they don't plan ahead to get a substitute I am out of luck. I just go without. Yes I can have fruit for dessert but that is no treat.
I know that the castmembers onboard will do their best but if they don't have the products to do it what can they do? It won't be their fault.

Splenda is so wonderful...I wish more restaurants, etc would start using it in their desserts. We use it at home all the time. It measures just like sugar, and tastes way better than those other sweetners which make me very sick. (asparatame)

You know what I would do? I would bring a big box of splenda on board and then talk to them once on board. To me it seems like there is often a little bit of a disconnect with the shore side people being a bit hesitant to make promises for the on board people when they aren't always exactly sure what is going on.
From everything I have heard or seen if you show up with the splenda, you will get deserts.

Bring the splenda with you and ask for them to cook up some desserts with it just for you, I bet the chef would be happy to comply!

Thank you. I will do just that. You guys are wonderful. I use Splenda at home. It is been a life saver quite literally for me.

Just report back after your cruise... I will be very curious to see what they do!
Who know's maybe on your next cruise you will be handed a "Splendid Splenda Desert Menu"

My family and I are on a no sugar, no aspratame diet...what you can do is get some cream cheese in the morning and let it sit out...then right before you grab some dinner mix the cream cheese is (about 4 of the packets they have) with a table spoon if Hersheys Chocolate Baking Powder (unsweetened) and 2 tablespoons of splenda) then put in the fridge and you can enjoy when you get back!!! Its great cheesecake!!!

Thanks for the recipe but I will be going to the shows after dinner. Have sign language interpreters set up and don't want to stand them up.

I didn't see anyone post this reply yet ...Did you fill out the medical form from DCL and mail it to them yet? It is imperative you do. It would be a huge liability if DCL did not accommodate you and you got sick. When you board, grab the interpreteurs and get yourself to the head server (usually Sessions).

I hate to sound SO upbeat here but when my SIL went with us they were extremely accommodating with her Celiac's Disease. They were'nt prepared on that first night but once we got the head server involved on that first night she had her own personal wheat-free, gluten-free PASTA sitting on her table with wheat-free, gluten-free BREAD within 20 minutes.

Kill them with kindness and understand most care and all will be fine. Don't let it spoil the rest of the trip - there's so much more than food!!

They have had the medical form for months. With details.

My husband is a diabetic also. he is able to use all sweetners, but I always try to find alternatives.

Have you used Stevia? It is natural and wonderful

Are you able to use fructose or honey? The glycemic index on those is alot lower, the insulin surge isn't as much.

Everyone reacts differently, just wanted to give you more suggestions.

You're right, unless DCL has the ingredients on board ahead of time, they will not be able to accomodate you.

Good luck, hope this helps!
