I'm going to arrange for assistance for my 78 yr. old mother for her solo return flight on Delta. She can walk despite multiple knee replacements, and she's 'all there' mentally, but after 3 days of park touring she may be a little slow afoot. Has anyone ever used Delta services in such a case? What do I need to do to arrange this and is a gratuity accepted? Can I arrange to accompany her to the departure gate?

Thanks,

Call Delta and tell them what you need.

Then have your mother remind the flight attendants at each stop.

I believe when you go to check in they will give you an access pass to the gate if you ask for it.

This service is provided by skycaps, not DL employees and I think a tip is kind of the norm, but I have no idea what you tip.

Bill:

My 84 yr. old mother can walk short distances, but I get her a wheelchair at the airport. I ask for a wheelchair when I make her air reservations. When she checks in at the airline counter I ask for a pass to take her to the gate and have always been issued one. I also remind them about the wheelchair. I also ask for a bulkhead seat for her. She pre-boards and they take care of her on the other end. We always tip the person that brings the wheelchair.

The different airlines she has flown on have been great about taking good care of her.

Thanks for the advice, CarolA & Gary M. If I can accompany her to the gate @ MCO and arrange for assistance @ CVG all will be well.

We are also travelling on Delta with my elderly mother, who has to fly to CVG alone before meeting us for the CVG-MCO flight. I called Delta and asked them to put a note re: elderly passenger w/mobility issues, and they put "gate assist" on her ticket. We'll see how it goes.
