Delta question

I just found out, 10 days before I leave, that I have to have a small surgery on friday. I will still be in a bit of pain and recovering. Has anyone ever upgraded to first class on Delta at check in? Will it cost an arm and a leg? Our seats are toward the back of the plane and I am afraid this will be difficult for me. I can not change seats as it looks like a sold out flight. There is nothing available to change to expect first class.

What airport are you flying from? I assume that you are flying into MCO? What type of fare did you book?

Also, there are sometimes seats that don't appear on the seating chart, but are actually available. Give Delta a call and see.

More also, seats will open up as Delta upgrades people (frequent flyers), you may be able to snag one of them (I'm not sure when Delta does this, as I'm not a frequent flyer with them).

The cost to upgrade is dependent upon which type of fare you purchased. Some fare categories aren't upgradeable at all and others for very little. Pull up your reservation and read through the rules associated with your fare category.

At the 72, 48 and 24 hour marks seats will open up as Skymiles Elite members are upgraded. You may be able to move up towards the front of the aircraft or get an aisle seat... but anything else will cost.

Delta frequently holds the bulkhead row for airport assignment. Not true for all flights (i.e. commuter partner flights), but for their main flights they do.

1.) Call or go online and request "wheelchair assistance" for the airports. The distances are long at most airports, you'll be glad to have the assistance. This also alerts the gate agent that you might need your seat changed.

2.) Call Delta and see if they can pre-assign a handicap seat. These are most aisle seats near the front of the coach area that usually have a movable armrest to make it easier to get in and out. These seats are blocked for pre-assignment but a Delta agent can override it, esp. if they see wheelchair assistance already noted in the record. Note this will be just for you, not usually enough seats for other members of your party. There's always the possibility that these are already assigned to others.

3.) If you can't get a pre-assigned seat closer to the front of the coach section, get to the airport early and ask for a seat change for the held back bulkhead seating or other seats toward the front. Again, this may be just for you if they don't have enough seats for your party to move.

4.) First Class is never free, but depending on how full it is, the distance of the flight, and what type of fare you paid, you might be able to purchase an upgrade. I've seen Boston-Orlando upgrades for $100-$250 at the airport, but not all fare levels qualify for an upgrade purchase. As far as moving you into First Class due to the medical issue, never seen it done since they have coach seats held back for that purpose.

When we flew out of DTW in 2009 we upgraded to first class on Delta, it was $150 per person...one way.

It is probably more than that with gas now, as airfare has climbed.

As others have said, some tickets are not able to be upgrades. Our last flight on Delta they were offering upgrades for $100 if you had the right ticket. A friend took a Delta flight in Feb. and they were offering upgrades for $50. It would probably be worth a call to Delta to see what they can tell you and they may even be able to get you a bulkhead seat so that there is no one in front of you and that would give you more leg room to move around in.

Just because the seat map for your flight shows that all economy seats are assigned does not mean that the flight is sold out.

There are seats in the forward part of the economy cabin that can only be pre-assigned to Delta's elite frequent fliers. Especially on leisure routes, such as to Orlando, these seats often often have nobody assigned to them, but they show has unavailable to "mere mortals." They are no better in terms of width or legroom than the economy seats in the back of the plane, but they're more desirable because you get off the plane more quickly. (Also, on rear-engine aircraft, they're quieter.)

On the day of the flight, the seats are under airport control and are assigned to any economy cabin passenger, regardless of frequent flyer status.

Other airlines, including United and American, do the same thing. On United, the seats in the forward part of the economy cabin have extra legroom and are called Economy Plus.

Start checking the seat map 72 hours before your flight. Chances are, however, that your best bet is to get the airport early to get a better seat assignment then.

I wouldn't count on first class, but that's a possibility. It probably won't be cheap. Moving forward in economy should be possible for no charge.

I know the off airport check-in facility in lake buena vista has access to the extra leg room seats

Economy Plus seats on United are not assigned to any economy passenger unless they pay the fee to sit there, except in exceptional circumstances, such as the plane is oversold.

You can always call now and ask to buy up to a First Class ticket.

Delta only offers gate upgrades after all the Medallion members have been upgraded. And then only from an M fare or higher (no L, U or T).

It is a T fare. I will be keeping a close eye on the seats. I am going to call and ask for wheelchair assistance for sure.
