Has anyone flown Delta with a layover, I'll be flying from Kansas City? And if you have did you have any problems with them losing your luggage. I've always flown non-stop, but I can fly with a layover and save $550. I'm just worried about losing my luggage with changing planes.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff

Millions of people have flown on Delta flights requiring a change of planes at some point; Delta would misdirect luggage at about the same rate as other airlines.

We flew Delta to MCO with a layover in Atlanta and nearly missed our connecting flights both ways. It was a miserable experience, so now I'll happily pay more to fly direct on another airline.

Our baggage was fine, though.

That's a good savings. We fly frequently and never have a problem with layovers. Take the standard precautions whenever you fly of having your medications, valuables and a change of clothes in your carryon.

I prefer to fly direct due to baggage, delays, and missed connection issues. Anyone of the website that shows delays by flight? This may be useful when planning times between connecting flights...

I travel BOS to OMA all the time for business and there are no direct flights. Delta is my primary airline but I have flown NW and Continental (SkyTeam partners). Anytime I fly ANYWHERE that has to have a connection, I always allow for at least an hour layover. That gives me some pad for the normal (15-30 minute) delay, getting from one gate to another without running (although it has happened) and most of all peace of mind knowing I have time.

As for lost luggage, I figured it out once and I have had about 98-99% success with getting my luggage (I have traveled every other week to Omaha since April 2005) and the few times I didn't get my bags was due to tight connections and me being faster than my bags getting from one plane to another.

The Department of Transportation produces a monthly "Air Travel Consumer Report", which give statistics for the major carriers on on-time rate, lost baggage, bumps, etc. The reports can be found at http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/index.htm

On Page 15 you'll see a list of regularly scheduled flights that are late 80% of the time or more. Be sure to look for your carrier as well as city pair as sometimes flight numbers change as schedules change. Also, if you're on a regional carrier, those flight may be listed separately. For example, Delta's code in the report is DL, and of their regional carriers Comair is OH and Atlantic Southeast is EV. I don't think there's any report that shows delays for every flight, although some airlines give ranges for their specific flights on their own website.

I have layovers all the time with delta, either in ATL,SLC, or CVG and have yet to have my luggage not make it where I am going (knocks on wood). You should be fine, especially with those savings!

We did our layover on Delta for our flight home. So, if they lose our luggage, no biggie, we have more clothes at home. :)

I will post about our Delta experience after we get back on the 15th of Feb though. This will be our first Delta flight...I have faith it will go at least tolerably! :flower3:

Jeff,

As a precaution, it's always a good idea to carry some essentials in a carry-on -- toothbrush, change of underwear etc. just in case -- but the vast majority of people have no problems with luggage making it to the destination. Have fun!
