Delta Fees..I Hate Surprises

We are taking Delta to WDW in Dec. There will be 5 of us. We will have 5 carry-ons and 2 checked bags total (not pp). Are we looking at 30.00 each way (15.00 each bag)? or are we going to have different fees on top of those? I usually don't carry too much cash at the airports but I want to make sure I have enough for this...I hate surprises.

Yup, Delta is $15 per bag, per way. There were no extra fees. A hint ... you can pre-pay your baggage fees online if you check-in online before going to the airport. I did this and then I didn't have to worry about the transaction at the airport.
Also, just so you are aware, due to the luggage fees, more people are bringing on carry-on luggage. My husband and I were forced to gate-check our one carry-on because the overhead compartments were full (it was a small roller suitcase and so it couldn't fit under the seat). However, we were not charged for this "privilege".

Actually if you pay on-line when you do on-$15.00 per checked bag, if you pay at the airport it is $20.00 as they add a $5.00 surcharge.

If you have a confirmation number for the Delta portion of your trip, you use that to check in online. You would sign into your Delta frequent flyer account and use the confirmation number, I believe.

If you don't have a Delta confirmation, contact your travel agent and ask them how you can check in online. They shouldn't have a problem helping you with that. You used to get extra frequent flyer miles for checking in online, too. It's been awhile since we have flown anywhere and things change pretty quickly.....but, checking in before you leave for the airport is always a good thing. I believe you print out your boarding pass and scan it at the airport when you check in your baggage.

I'm going to have to look at that prepay for your luggage with the online check in....

Also, it's worth mentioning that you can expect a few changes in your flight itinerary between now and the time you leave as Delta and Northwest merge....or maybe that's just something to expect flying in and out of Montana.

Delta is really easy to check-in on-line. Twenty-fours before your flight just enter your confirmation number or you can use your credit card number. You don't have to be a freq. flyer to do this. There will be a place to the left on the Delta site to check-in. At the same time it will ask if you are checking luggage. Just follow the screen and it is really easy. When you get to the airport go to the curbside check-in or to the kiosk and then the desk to get the baggage claim sticker put on the luggage and away you go. If you are staying on-site at Disney you will be able to pay for your checked luggage 24hours before you check out. There will information on BAGS in the room and the number to cal (free from Disney hotels). Just have your confirmation number, credit card and pen/paper handy. They will give you a confirmation number to take to the RAC desk in the lobby when checking out and they will take care of the luggage and your boarding passes.

We fly Delta quite a bit, and always have to gate-check larger carry on luggage on the smaller regional jets (any of the CRJ type, and some others). If you check the plane type, it should give you a hint about whether to expect this. As an earlier post mentioned, it all depends on space even on larger craft too.

Personally, I always make sure to pack my carryon with an additional small tote inside so I can pull any essential/valuable/delicate items out and bring them on the plane with me if I need to gate-check or do plane-side at some point during travels.

As far as the online check in, I use it every time we fly, and pre-pay the luggage fee as well. We then do curbside checkin at the airport and shave a good 30 minutes off by going straight to security/TSA instead of having to check in. It's great!

FWIW, I wasn't aware that there was a higher fee (additional surcharge) for checking luggage at the airport. I guess it's a good thing I do the online or I'd have been surprised at the counter!

Thanks for the info. I booked through WDW travel and I didn't pay Delta Directly. Does anyone know if WDW will send me my flight confirmation? I never looked through my packet info on prev trips

We're coming back on NWA and I see on their site that is says it is cheaper to prepay when checking in online so I'll see how that goes on the way back.

He how's it going? What airport do you fly out of? I am also worried that if I print my boarding passes online they won't know what I am talking about.

You should have paid $15.00 per bag on line if you pay at the airport they will charge you a $5.00 surcharge so it is cheaper to pay on line.

When traveling within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, customers are charged $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second checked bag (each way, for round trip). We flew from Kalispell (Glacier International) to Orlando (MCO). We stayed on-site at one of the USO resorts. They told us we could come up to the front desk and they would print out our boarding passes when it came time to fly out. They wouldn't let me go back behind the counter and the clerk that helped me said that NWA didn't provide an option to pre-pay for luggage when checking in online. We paid the $15 for each bag when we got to the airport.

Now, at this hotel, I have online access so I will see what the screens look like when I check in online to fly out of here....that will be Sunday.

I believe the NWA main site page says you save $5 on each bag when you pay online at check in....I'll find out when I print the next set of boarding passes.

I absolutely love Glacier Park....it is my favorite of all the National Parks! But, it has been snowing while we are gone and, you can see the temp in my ticker....I wonder if I have left the heat set high enough while we are gone!

When I went online to check in to NWA, down at the bottom of the screen, they offered options such as upgrading to first class, prepaying for luggage, etc. I checked the option to prepay our luggage and it asked for a credit card number, which I put in. I did not get a receipt or any acknowledgment that I had prepaid for the luggage, it just indicated how many pieces of luggage we were going to bring with us.

When we got to the airport the next morning, they asked us to give a credit card to pay for the luggage. I told her I had already prepaid when I checked in the previous day. She said 'the credit card would not be charged until we finished check in' and that she needed a credit card.

I told her again that I had already prepaid for luggage when we printed out the boarding passes the previous day. She got irritated and wanted a credit card. DH gave her his credit card and he told me to watch my credit card statement to make sure I did not (also) get charged for luggage. She gave us receipts for payment of our luggage to fly with us.

So....I still don't know how the online-prepay-with-boarding-pass-for-the-luggage is supposed to work.
