Delta change question--need help

I had AirTran tickets for my mom and I when she died before the trip. They refunded her ticket but not mine. I had insurance, so I filed a claim for mine.

Am I the only one thinking this is a lot of trouble for a kids sport? I would say don't go to the tournament because you already have travels plans.

No, I actually agree with the OP. Sometimes that could result in a child being thrown off a team. I know it's too late for the OP but I only book once I have received my DD's schedule. I also know that Non-Refundable means just that. It's not fair sometimes but the airlines are a business. A business which publicizes their fare rules prior to booking but people don't read. This is a good lesson for everyone to read the fare rules prior to purchasing. If you purchase the fare, you are agreeing to the fare rules.

This is true...sports teams depend on the kids. As parents we need to realize that sometimes buying cheap tickets might cost us in the end. The airlines have heard every sob story in the book to get out of the change fee and won't budge (I told earlier how having a miscarriage and medical excuse to get home didn't budge on me paying for 2 fees). It gets harder and harder to change. Don't commit until you are 100% the days work..but things come up and if you have to change or there is a chance buy high price ticket, fly SW or pay the fee.

If your roundtrip was $184, did you try pricing a one way ticket for your return flight? It might actually come out cheaper than paying the $200 change fee. Because really after deducting the $200 penalty from the value of your ticket, you're left with no credit to be used toward a new ticket. In this case, it's more cost effective to forget about the tickets you already have and book the one way return flight. But if all 6 of you are on the same reservation, make sure you notify Delta which 3 passengers are not flying so it doesn't affect those who are.

So, you are saying to pay the $200 change fee and then pay the $92 one way fare (if it's still available)? Math has never been my strong point. ;)

No, you wouldn't have to pay the $200 change fee because you're not changing your existing tickets. You would book a new one way ticket.

In your case, the change fee is higher than the actual cost of the ticket that you already paid so just for changing the ticket you would be losing your original fare paid ($184) plus another $16 (to complete the $200 change fee). Which means if you change the ticket you have, it will cost you $16 more than just booking a new ticket for the one way. I hope that makes sense.
Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be glad to help.

I did that this week....

Had a $150 ticket Saturday to Wed.

Could not make that...

Bought new ticket for $180 Sunday to Wed. Just ignored ticket 1 as pricing change fee was going to eat entire ticket. (I did call the airline and tell them but....)

We have to drive an hour to get to a small airport with limited legacy airline service. It is part of life for us and we have to put up with their policies. Sometimes we are able to benefit from the "lower" fares, but there have been times when a death or illness in the family has resulted in high cancellation fees. It is part of the consequences of choosing to fly rather than drive.

We would have to drive 5 hours to use Southwest, so that is not a viable option.
