How strict is Delta on the size of carry on luggage? My suitcase is 1" over their height measurement. I haven't flown Delta before but I have used the suitcase on other airlines without a problem. I don't want to start my Disney trip with a problem!

We just got back and flew Delta out of Detroit. I cannot say for sure but I can tell you one of our bags was a little bigger than they said on their website and they never checked us.

Usually airlines do not measure your carry-on at the gate. However, if your bag is larger than the stated allowed measurement, it will likely not fit in the overhead bin. And many planes have smaller overheads than the allowed bag measurements.

OP - Follow the stated measurement guidelines or be prepared to gate check your bag if it doesn't fit.

Easy answer: then don't try to carry on the suitcase in question.

My daughter flies Delta back and forth to college regularly. Sometimes they measure, sometimes they don't...all depends on the staff on duty that day and the amount of carry-on bags the attendants see folks have. If they think there may be a problem, out comes the measuring gauge.

My daughter has in fact seen folks with oversized bags get pulled. So it all comes down to how lucky you might be feeling on that particular day.

It will likely depend on how full the plane is. I flew Delta from Lansing, through Detroit, and on to Orlando in April and the plane was jam packed. They pulled a bunch of us with carry-ons of the legal size and had us check the bags at the gate. (Everyone in Zone 3 or something like that.) They were not, however, "gate checked" as usually understood. We had to go to baggage claim to pick up our carry on bags. I was not happy.

When we flew the same route last month, it was still a crowded flight, but there was more room and they didn't select a loser group have to check their carry-ons.

We were on a Delta flight and the mother and two daughters behind us had their bags pulled and checked. I had to then listen to the mother complain for the entire 3 hours fllight about having to pay bag fees for the three bags. When we got to baggage claim I was interested to see what the bags looked like. They were your normal wheeled carry-on, with the exception that they expanded and were stuffed!! So you may get luck but they may check - you never know. I do know that the last Delta flight we took two weeks ago the overhead bins were small and most of the normal size wheeled carry-ons had to go in sideways instead of wheels to the back and the height of the bins wasn't very high so most bags just fit in - even an inch would have made a difference with those bins.
