Can anyone tell me if I have a roller bag as hand luggage and can I use a small day backpack as my personal item on delta? I am not taking a purse and it would have very little in it. As well we are not checking a bag so I am trying to save space.

As long as the backpack fits under the seat in front of you that should be fine.

I have been on Delta flights where all the overhead bins are full & they make the remaining passangers check ALL bags with wheels, regardless of size. You can try to bring your roller on, just be prepared that you may have to check it at the gate.

I heard Delta has gotten strict with the carryon sizes. Be sure it meets their requirements.

Carry-on Baggage Size Restrictions
When oversized bags do not fit in the overhead bins, delays occur. Fees will be applied to the oversized bag if it has to be checked at the gate. To avoid delays as well as fees, follow these size requirements:

Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width, and height.
Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9" (or 56 x 36 x 23 cm).

But any time I've had to "check" a bag at the gate because of full overhead bins I've never had to pay for it. They just give you a claim ticket, take the bag down to the plane, bring it up when you get off and you claim it at the gate, not at baggage claim.

I usually take a roller "carry-on" size suitcase and a backpack as my personal item. I've never had any issue with it and I've been doing that for the last 3 years or so.

I fly Delta frequently. If it's a regional jet, they will deliver it back at the gate. If it's a full size plane, it goes to baggage claim.

If you are flying on a regional jet (i.e., CRJ or the like), your roller bag will most likely not fit and you will have to gate check it ... the backpack should be OK. If you are flying on a bigger jet then both should be OK.

Sorry, I should have been more clear...the roller bag is carry on size....I have used it many times with Delta...I was just unsure about the backpack and it will easily fit under the seat.

That should be fine.

I have PERSONALLY been on Delta flights (recently) where every roller bag was gate checked. Just be prepared. Keep your valuables in your backpack & put a lock on your roller.

Whether they may charge for gate checking depends on the size and quantity of baggage.

We are a family of five we all have a roller carry on and a backpack and have never had any issues. The kids backpacks go under the seat and i place mine in the overhead bin.
