Am i right in thinking I can check 2 cases under 23kg per person without charge.....or is it 1? see script from their website. We fly in october 2009

Checked Baggage—International
Currently when traveling to or from cities outside the United States you can check two bags, per passenger at no extra charge. For customers traveling between the U.S. and Europe for tickets purchased on or after May 23, 2009 for travel beginning July 1, 2009 customers in economy class will be charged $50 US (or the local equivalent currency) for the second checked bag. Exceptions to the second checked bag fee include:

First and Business Class passengers
SkyMiles and WorldPerks Elite members (Platinum, Gold, and Silver)
Active duty military members traveling on orders
Passengers who purchased tickets prior to May 23, 2009
Passengers who are confirmed on a Full Y class Economy ticket.
Destinations
Free Baggage Acceptance Baggage Requirements
50 United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands - Economy Class

For tickets purchased on or after July 16, 2009 for travel on or after August 4, 2009 $15 fee, first bag;
$25 fee, second bag. There will be a $5 surcharge on each of the first two checked bags when checking in via ticket counter, kiosk, or curbside. There is no surcharge for bags prepaid during online check-in at delta.com.
For 3 or more bags see excess baggage fees. Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) .
Thanks in advance for help.:goodvibes

i would call delta if i were you - those are rather convoluted rules...

did you buy your tickets before May 23rd?
are you paying full fare economy?

and lots of other small print..

i would call them and ask..

it sounds as if you pay for the 2nd bag if your tickets were purchased after may 23rd....but it's not that clear..

i went to their website to see if i could figure it out, but it really is a lot of gobbledy gook..
call them and ask - i wonder if they know the answer themselves.

Thanks, thought it was me, yes we are travelling economy and yes i booked my tickets after may 23rd, but still seems unclear to me

Hi, we flew with Northwest Airlines in May but I know the two have merged. Our flight was operated by delta. I rang up to check the allowance and they said we could take up to 8 bags at 23 kg (we were 4 passangers)
We still werent convinced and took 4 bags, (we really didnt need 8 anyway lol) but when we got to Heathrow I checked again and the guy on the desk said you are allowed 46kg each.
We ended up buying loads of stuff and bought an extra couple of cases home with no problem!!
Just ring and double check because you dont want to be hit for excess baggage charges!

Hope this helps

this is no longer true - Delta baggage allowances have been reduced since May.

I'm reading it as first bag per person is included but the second bag is $50. We're using Delta for our internal flight (Boston to Orlando) and have to pay for ALL checked luggage, $15 for the first bag per person and $25 for the second if it's prepaid during online check-in. This seems to be becoming the norm for most US internal flights unless they're purchased as part of a long-haul journey.
ETA, I think the Orbitz baggage page explains things a bit more clearly, just scroll to the Delta bit: https://faq.orbitz.com/cgi-bin/orbitz_faq.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7041

Thanks for the help Mandy, the website is just way to confussing so I quess the phone is the best option.

Thanks that is much clearer, have checked with airline too.
First case upto 23kg free
second case $50.
Wish i had known this before booking, just took it for granted most airlines were 2 cases per person.
Still did get a good deal on costs of flights.
