Hi All,

I consider myself a very smart person (yes, I feel the need to qualify)but I have a question about how to delete books from a Kindle.

I've read the Help info on amazon.com and followed the instructions but it's not working.

I don't have a Kindle Fire...just the regular black and white one.

I have gone to "Manage your Kindle" and deleted the books there and then gone to my device and deleted them off the device but they just seem to go into my Archive and stay there. What am I doing wrong? :confused3

Thanks,
Susan

I wouldn't want to delete any books from my Archive, only my Home screen, but if you really need to do that:

How to permanently delete a book from Archived Items?
To completely delete a book from your Kindle so that it doesn’t show up on your account or in “Archived items” collection you need to go to “Manage Your Kindle” page, find the book in question, expand the information block by clicking on the “+” sign near the book name and click on delete. You will be asked for a confirmation, since this action is non-revocable, the book would be completely gone and you will need to buy it again to read it. You will not be refunded the original purchase cost.

How about those of us with Kindle Fires....while we can delete books from the carousel, how about from our "cloud" listing?

I'm following all of the instructions on amazon.com but I have to be missing something. I've tried searching other websites but they are talking more about how to delete books that weren't purchased from amazon. I don't like having books that I will never read again clutter up my Kindle.

Did a little internet hunting on my own and found this:

To delete most items from your Kindle Fire, press and hold the item and tap "Remove from Device" or "Delete."

To permanently remove a title from your Kindle account (this is the only way you can have an item not show via the Cloud on your Kindle Fire):
1. Locate the item you wish to delete in the Your Kindle Library section of Manage Your Kindle (www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle).
2. Click on "Delete from Library" in the "Actions" menu to permanently remove the title.

After the title is removed from your account, you will no longer have access to re-download this title unless you re-purchase it. Existing copies of this title already on your device must be manually removed.

After you use the above directions, make sure you press the "SYNC" icon on your Kindle Fire. All deleted books will disappear from your Kindle. :)

I think you understand this, but just in case you don't, or for others who may not.

When you say cluttering up - do you just mean you just don't like seeing the pictures of those books in your Archive? Because they aren't taking up any space on your Kindle once they are in the Archive.

I still don't understand entirely why you would delete something you paid for from your Kindle library altogether. I guess it's like throwing away hard copy books from your shelves, but I mainly do that to free up shelf space for new ones, so it's not necessary with e-books.

Vicki,

When I got my Kindle I found the free books on Amazon and went crazy downloading a bunch of them. I was so happy to find free books, mysteries, romance, travel, history, cookbooks etc...well, I should have realized I would get what I paid for becuase the vast majority of them were okay but nothing I would want to read over and over and now I want to make room for books that I will want to keep.

Now, as to the books in the Archive not taking up space...maybe I am missing something because when I "remove from device" and they go into the archive the memory does not increase.

Thanks,
Susan

elaine and the boys - you helped me figure it out (the fire and the regular kindle must be more similar than I thought :) )

the one step that I kept missing was to press sync! :worship:

Thank you very much!

With the newest app update from just last week - it is now separated into "in the cloud" and "on device", so I will speak from that terminology. "In the cloud" shouldn't be taking up any memory on your device. "On device" are actually downloaded to your device. If you delete them from the "device" - it should free up some space, but I have no idea how much - that is something I never really paid much attention to - how much memory does an average ebook actually use? I'm not sure myself. Things shown in the cloud (previously Archive) aren't taking up any storage space on your device, unless it's some kind of tiny amount for the thumbnails of the books.

I know what you mean though about the free books - I have a handful as well, and most of them were worth about just that much! :good vibes

PS - just realized I am speaking iPhone / iPad app terminology - sorry about that! Somewhere along the way I forgot we were talking about actual Kindles. Did syncing though resolve your problem of making them totally disappear?

vicki,

I understand what you're talking about now...we have our terms mixed up.
When I say Archive I mean the archive folder on the physical Kindle that the books go into when you delete them. I think you thought I meant the "cloud" technology that Amazon has on their website that holds your Kindle library. I know now why you couldn't understand why I would delete the books from there. I wanted to take them off my physical Kindle.

And yes! Synching worked... :yay:

The Archive folder on your Kindle is just a listing of books you have purchased but are not downloaded to your Kindle. Those books are not actually there. If you want to move one from your Archive to the Kindle, they must be downloaded again.

So, the Archive is "the cloud." The only benefit of deleting something from the Archive is that you don't have to look at such a long list.

tj evans - I have one funky Kindle then because I have a folder on my physical Kindle that's called "Archive" and when I delete a book it goes into the "Archive" on the actual Kindle, not the cloud on the Amazon website.

Must be different versions of the software on the Kindle. Only thing I can guess. I, too have an Archive folder on the Kindle, but books in the folder are not really on the Kindle. They take up no memory on the Kindle.
