Just announced at Comic-Con: Guillermo del Toro is going to do a new Haunted Mansion movie...in 3D of course. The only thing clear about it otherwise is it completely ignores the earlier Eddie Murphy movie.

He left "The Hobbit" for that???

He left "The Hobbit" because the sinking ship that owns the rights still hasn't greenlit it, and he needed to move on with other projects.

I'd take my chances with "The Hobbit," despite all the problems on the business end. It's too big and valuable not to get made, and is part of a proven franchise with a terrific team behind it. The problems are all related to the studio, not the film.

Directors don't like to remain idle. And they usually have several projects in the pipeline. This was probably already planned, but the delays in "The Hobbit" would probably have jeopardized this schedule. Plus Jackson still has control and will likely direct.

Maybe it will get made.....someday. Return of the King was released in 2003 so they have effectively been trying to make The Hobbit for 6-7 years with no start date in sight. Can't blame the guy for moving on.

I'm not a huge fan of del Toro's work (not my thing) but from what I've seen he looks like an amazing choice for a Haunted Mansion film.

But the studio (MGM) pays for the film, and right now the studio is bankrupt. No money, no film.

They're going through the motions with Peter Jackson (who's not officially signed to take over as director) supposedly screen testing actors...but the thinking is that it's all show to entice a buyer to invest in the studio. But so far, no one's buying.

James Bond is going through the same thing. Right now, that next film is cancelled.

Right now, I think MGM is hoping that New Line/WB will buy out the rights completely and pay for the film, but they probably want too much money for it. The whole thing between MGM and New Line was weird from the start.

The guy seems to be a Haunted Mansion nut as he uses it as a form of stress relief and has a HM themed room in his house with wall papering from the original ride. Also of note is that the Hatbox Ghost is a central role in the movie.
