Defrosting a turkey-can someone explain why...

My grandma used to get a fresh turkey and leave it sitting in the pantry for a day or two before cooking.

Nobody ever got sick.

We do the sink routine with thawing.

Nobody's ever gotten sick.

It's amazing we all lived to tell the tale. My mother tells me that they used to leave eggs on the counter and didn't refridgerate them. Also, remember the milk man leaving milk outside at your door?

Regarding a turkey: I start the defrosting a few days before the dinner in the fridge. This is where an extra refridgerator comes in mighty handy. Then the day before, I start soaking it in water. Then back to the fridge for the night. It's then ready to be cooked.

Went to MIL's for Thanksgiving, guess who's bird was raw in the middle? I didn't let the kids eat it. We then went to my sister's for "dessert" and ate there. It was gross.

The dh is telling me "eat it!" I'm like, um...no, the kids and I aren't eating that, eat it if YOU want to. My SIL looked at him like he was crazy. LOL

Ah...good times.

I thaw in the sink or fridge, depending on if I remember to put it in the fridge in time.
