Hi, due to many personal issues this year, we are not up to celebrating the holidays, have booked a condo in Deerfield. It’s not on the beach, but a ten min or so walk. We are there dec 20-Jan 4

This was impulsive tonight , I want my son to “try” to get his mind off things , and possibly take in a basketball game, and a hockey game.

I was wondering what, if anyone may know about the area. I have googled and found stores and such . I was trying to perhaps see if anything was open for Xmas dinner.

Thank you in advance if you do. Oh and we don’t need tons of activities , we need to just Get out of here, I’ll be walking a lot

I just want to wish you a peaceful and healing holiday season. I don't know anything about that area so can't help. But I'm sending many warm thoughts and prayers your way. :grouphug:

I'm not sure where Deerfield is, what larger city is it near? Tampa? Daytona?

We've been to Florida several times so if Deerfield is near an area where we've been, maybe I can help.

Like the PP, I want to wish you a peaceful/healing holiday. I hope it's all that you hope it will be.

Thank you both. It’s in Broward County. Considered part of the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale- Pompano Beach area. Maybe a 30 minute drive . So it’s not far from Ft. Lauderdale.

Boca area is the closest .

I'm not familiar with the area, but our family loves any beach.

We do spend weeks at the beach several times a year, and I'm always amazed by it's healing powers. There is just something about the feel of the sand, the scent of the salt and the sound of the surf.

I wish you and your family all the best, HUGS!

:grouphug: Me as well mommasita.

My like was hopeful that this choice will bring you at the least some moments of distraction from the pain you are feeling. Love sent.

I spent every Christmas until I was about 18-years-old in Deerfield. We weren't on the beach (or even walking distance), but went to the beach often. It's been years since I've been but let me think.

Will you have a car? Most of my suggestions would probably need one.

My family enjoyed Whaler's Rib (Whale's Rib)? Which is just off the beach. The pizza place right across the street from it was also tasty. Oceans 234 is also right there for a fancier meal.

Not sure about Christmas Day, I'm afraid.

With a car, we like Season's 52 in Boca. Also the Boca Town Center mall. Good movie theatre just beyond the mall and University Commons (Glades and Airport Road) has a few restaurants (we tend to go there for an after movie dinner).

Thank you. I may be stretching the walking distance, but I walk A TON, so we will see . Yes, we are driving , will have a car.

Great info, appreciate it. Thanks again . Canadians are playing Tampa Bay during our stay, so something to do as well.

My husband will be house hunting and working on some construction while there with friends.

We are from Toronto (originally Montreal but family moved in early 80s) and saw the Leafs play (Panthers though). I think that there were more Leafs fans than Panther fans!

mommasita, if you wish to have the Christmas meal in the condo I do know that are quite a few places will do a pre-cooked Christmas order for you - Whole Foods is one. Publix is another. I'm sure you will find both somewhere in that area.

Cracker Barrel is also listing full meals available to purchase on Christmas Eve.

If you want to be out I would think large hotels would be a good place to start.

There is a Whole Foods in the University Commons that I mentioned. We shop at the Publix at Hillsboro and Powerline but there is likely one closer (our place is up by the train station).

So first, it's been 15 years, but we used to have a hockey tournament in Deerfield. Obviously 10 college students in a single room is different from what you are doing, but the area always seemed like a nice safe area. Didn't feel like Miami at all to me (I think of Miami as super crowded/dense).

Now, I am a HUGE hockey fan (was a Lightning season ticket holder when down there). Tampa is quite a drive, but Habs at Tampa is not an easy ticket to get. Tampa has been sold out for over 100 straight games as is. Though I will say, that arena is freaking amazing now. If the Habs are in Tampa, I'll bet a lot of money they are probably in Sunrise as well. That will be much closer, and it will be a lot easier to get tickets, though it's certainly not as nice an arena. Hope you have a great time.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

The review looks like our type of place, we would rather be out than in. Also have friends there, and my girlfriend is flying down the 26, so we have company after Xmas.

We may do both hockey games, we are big fans also , but the tickets are not an issue, thankfully. It’s my son wanting to see basketball, also, so must just work out the dates and such. I do NOT want to see basketball in the least.

I like the Deerfield Beach area. You are close to Fort Lauderdale which is fun for a daytrip. The last two years we have done a Segway tour in Ft Lauderdale that goes through the state park there. We bought tickets through Groupon and it was very cheap and a great tour. highly recommend if they are still offering them and if you are looking for something fun and a little different.

Del Ray Beach is also north of Deerfield and is a great Beach town. The Main Street has tons of cafes and shops and is always decorated nicely for the holidays. Fun place to go for dinner since all the cafes are lit up with pretty white lights.

If you are looking for a little more action, just south of Ft Lauderdale is Hollywood Beach with the boardwalk. Fun place for a day. You can see live pictures of it on sunny.org.

Have a wonderful time!

we are heading down to the same area very soon..... I have a list from tripadvisor of things I want to try visiting while there..... looks like lots of outdoor activities to be found!

@mommasita We are 20 min from Boca... tons to do in the area - movies, mall, Boomers (indoor arcade with go karts, rock climbing, laser tag, etc), great restaurants, etc. You're also very close to Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach - more good restaurants and home to our huge Christmas tree (go see it! It's stunning!). Further south you have Miami - the Museum of Ice Cream just opened... I don't know how old your son is but maybe that'd be cool to see.

Lots of sporting events in the area as well as concerts, etc.

Thanks everyone. My son is 21

I have, and will continue to look at your suggestions, and online, minus the Xmas tree. Ty. We are just not celebrating. Thanks again.
