Deer Accidents

Well I work for one of the Big insurance comp. not yours.. and it falls under comphrensive coverage and we NEVER waive a deductible. but anything over your Ded we cover. pull out your policy and read it. It should clearly state any loss caused by a missle, falling objects, windstorm, hail, fire, explolsion, earthquake, water, flood, total or partial theft, vandalism riot civil commotion or hitting or being hit by a bird or animal..
hence COMP coverage....
unless you agreed to some type of exclusion when you changed your policy by mistake - but I doubt it..its basic coverage. Act of Gods have to do with weather not animals.

If the Progressive office is next to the body shop why didn't you just go to the office directly instead of the phone tag?
I'm sorry you were hit by a deer, I'm sure they will take care of it for you.

We dropped off the car early and my husband didn't want to be even later to work. he missed 2 days for the funeral since it was his Unlce/Godfather. It wasn't an office, it looked like a repair shop too, had cars sitting outside. I really thought she would actually call us back.

I get that totally, but at least 20 people have told me they had their detuctibel waived. So it just makes me mad. I am now telling people I do not want to hear it.

just a small PSA-- agents sell you insurance they are not versed in the claim process and most don't give correct information or advice to their policy holders when it comes to a claim - so please don't yell at the adjuster when we tell you that your agent is wrong.. claim representives don't sell insurance and agents don't handle claims.:thumbsup2 JS...

depends on the company they are with.. I know who I work for NEVER will do this --not even on collision claims that we know you are not responsible for.
Other companys do waive it depending on years w/company and your claim history with them. there is always a variable with it. I personal never expect it and assume I will be paying whatever dedcutible I pay to have on my policy.

They finally went and looked at the car. After the rain storm of course. I feel like we are still being scammed. I am trying to look this up on line, and my husband is calling Hyundai right now.
The Progressive guy said that the headlight is attached in 6 places. well was. they only want to fix 4 of the places. The Progressive guy said to fix the last two they have to take the radiator out, and really it's not needed since the headlight can just lay there without being attached. I mean really??! If they don't attach it to the last 2, they will take off $950 off our deducible.
they are fixing the door where it was dented and the back part under the door where it was also dented and scratched by the Deer.

It would be great to save the $950, but what happens if this cause us issues down the line. I just don't trust Progressive at all.

we are waiting for the dealer to call us back. we have a 20 year warranty on the car and I don't want this to cause issue down the line. we are looking at a 3 week repair.

You save very little money having a deductible on your COMPREHENSIVE. On my policy I save like $10 per year per car if i have a higher deductible, so I carry 0 deductible on comprehensive. I don't mind, because when you get your windshield broken by a rock or have someone steal your car, you are covered. (I do carry a higher deductible on collision, it is more money).

Even though I had the 0 deductible, I didn;t realize that comprehensive covered damage by animals until 4 years AFTER the deer committed deer suicide on my car. live and learn.

I hope it works out for you

It sounds like they might be offering you an "appearance allowance" by not completely repairing your headlight. This would reduce your deductible owed by that amount ($950).

They probably have a broad form of coverage and don't even know it. Under some broad policies, the deductible is not charged if you were not at fault in the accident. Those coverages come with a cost.

That makes sense, btw, sorry for your loss

I've had deductibles waived but I've had to pay them the majority of the time. It's a case by case basis and I've been lucky once or twice. :) I've also had the same insurance company for 20+ years.

Ok but if it's attached in 4 places you're probably OK, it's a good idea to check though, especially with a warranty like that. You don't want to void it. Good luck!!

My husband made a mistake. I am not sure how he didn't see it was so cheap to lower it. I guess we will live and learn. thanks. After this we will have as low as we can.

Thank you everyone for your help. I know that we have learned a lesson in all this. The comprehensive never should have been so high. we are huge savers and my husband usually researches everything to the last detail, so I really don't know what happened. I really do think if we would have had an agent that they would have mentioned it to us. My mistake for keeping my "cheap" insurance. Hopefully this makes everyone think about and look at their insurance info.
I am sure some people have a better time with Progressive, but I guess we are just unlucky. Just not what we needed to deal with while we mourned DH's Uncle.

We have Progressive and I was thinking that a deer fell under "comprehensive", they are a very real threat. That's why we have like a $50 deductible on comprehensive. If Progressive didn't cover deer, I was going to be finding a new company.

I've hit 6 deer in 5 years! I seem to attract wildlife while driving. All I had to pay to Allstate each time was my $500 deductible. They never asked any questions, just had my car fixed! They were great! :)

You folks on this board will probably think my deer story is the worst deer accident story ever.....

First family vacation in 2009 with my wife and the kids. 19.5 hour drive to Disneyworld for our first vacation. 2 hours in and a deer jumped over the barrier from the center median. Car right behind me, so I didn't nail the brakes too hard until the car behind moved over to the other lane. Barely tapped the deer.

Luckily, barely any damage. Could have been far worse and canceled the trip with 17 hours left to be there. That would have stunk. Had I nailed the brakes hard, I would have not hit the deer, but we would have had to sort out the car behind us from our luggage in the back of our Escape and the vacation definitely would have been canceled.

Drove to Disney, spend an incredible HOT week, drove home and dropped the car off at one of the shops the insurance company uses. Picked up the car 3 days later and wrote out a $100 check for the deductible. No hassle whatsoever.

What does the repair shop say? Will the missing 2 screws really effect the headlight? I might be tempted to accept their offer to save $950 if it really won't matter on something I can't see.

I'm sorry for the loss of your family member and thankful that you weren't injured in the deer encounter. A deer ran into my car one morning as I was driving to work, but the damage didn't appear to be more than my $500 deductible, so I never filled a claim. DS is still driving the car with hoof prints in the driver's side door.

We also carry high deductibles on all our policies and are about to shell out $2500 for the hail damage to our roof. Just remember that you are saving money in your premiums. If you're not saving enough to justify the deductible payment from time to time, you should lower your deductibles.

Hope it all works out for you.

Sheila

I learned that you can have different deductibles for comprehensive and collision. I always thought they had to be the same, but now that others have mentioned that lowering the comprehensive deductible isn't pricey, we'll take a look at that option.

Sorry for your hassles, but thanks for bringing it up.
