Decorating Mylar Balloons - Will This Work?

Hi, there,
I was hoping to surprise my teacher friend by asking her class to decorate mylar balloons (with Sharpies?) for her birthday. After they decorate them, I plan to take them back to the store to have them inflated. I've never done something like this ... (crafty and artsy I am not!), but I wanted to see if anyone here could foresee any problems with my plan, or if you had any helpful hints to make it easier.
Thanks!

I don't know if the Sharpies will work -- but I have seen mylar balloons decorated with those press and stick letters and shapes before.

Can you do a trial run with a spare balloon before taking the others to school?

Neat idea!

don't know if this would happen with a mylar-but just as a warning-dd's school let the kids decorate regular balloons with sharpies and then bring them home. no problem until dd happened to set the balloon on the carpet-the ink rubbed off and we were left with unremovable ink stains on the carpet:scared1:

for the protection of the kid's clothing and anything else the balloons might come in contact with you might want to see if the ink rubs off during or after application.

In cold weather, mylar baloons deflate, then return back to normal after they have been in for a while. Just something to think about when your planning. You will want a few hours for them to return to their full deflation if possible.

Also, if you are thinking about having a few latex ballons filled up with heliium too, just know that they don't seem to last that well. Last year, I was planning a baby shower for a girl at work and bought the ballons the day before. When I came in the next morning the latex ballons were on the ground - and I had to run out and get fresh ones!

Good luck!

A tip: when you have the balloons filled, ask if the shop has a product called Hi-Float. If they do, ask them to use it (they may charge you an extra quarter or so). It's a gel that's squirted in a balloon before it's filled so that it coats the inside of the balloon. It makes them last about 10 times longer than they normally would.

Not sure if this will work....go out and try it today to see. I don't think Sharpies adhere to Mylar to well.

Sharpies work fine on Mylar balloons. I've done it.

Thanks for all the feedback! You were ALL very helpful!
