Decluttering and VHS tapes?

we got toshiba vhs/dvd recorder/player/burner and are transferring home movies on vhs to dvd - also certain vhs tapes that aren't available on dvd - will throw out remaining vhs (no library around here wants them - not going to go looking for goodwill, etc to haul them over)

of course DH has his jimi hendrix vhs collection that he will NOT burn to dvd and dump - nope, all those vhs will remain in their 2 large rubbermaid tubs indefinitely.... :rolleyes2

Those Hendrix tapes should be burned to dvd, or at least ripped to a hard drive & backed up. I wouldn't toss the VHS tapes, but they could be boxed up for storage once they are digitized. Those VHS tapes will deteriorate to the point where they will no longer play. Might be years, some already may be unplayable, but getting them transferred is job one. Chances are your DH will watch them more frequently once they are on a more convenient format (

I threw all mine out. Nobody wants the VHS movies, not the library, not the hospital thrift store, no one it seems. And of course no one wants my tapes from the 1984 Olympics in LA or reruns of The Addams Family.

Actually if you had the gymnastics I so would take them! I was only 4 and I missed a lot! Thank goodness for youtube! :goodvibes OP I still have mine. We have a working VHS player, but don't really use it. Will get rid of them eventually.

for the kid movies, I would call schools or daycares. Our school has a VHS/DVD player in each room. Our teachers show the movies on rainy or snowy lunch days or if they are like Magic School Bus or something as part of a lesson.

The Disney ones I sold on ebay. Got 3.00 each for them and sold them in groups of 3.

My husband refuses to get rid of all the VHS tapes in the basement. They are taking up a small room down there.
They were taped from TV shows direct from the TV. He insists he is going to transfer them all to disc - that was 10 years ago and none have been touched.

I'd love it if he purged some.

We have a lot of old VHS tapes as well. DH more than me though. Both of us have taped shows we watched back when we were kids. I have episodes of Doctor Who taped from the mid 80's that I refuse to get rid of. Mainly b/c I found out that some of the original Doctor Who episodes (don't know which ones) were destroyed in a fire and are now gone forever :sad1:. Some have been released on DVD but not many from my favorite Doctor.

Btw, our wedding video is on VHS (1999). I've asked DH if we can transfer it over to DVD so that we will always have it and not worry about the tape wearing down. He knows how to do it since he's done it before, but it does take some time to do it. Unfortunately, he doesn't really have time to convert it over.
