I think that the closer to the dates, the more activity there is. I have taken part in several trades in August.

To answer PP question... if there is a credit card hold you can't transfer it, at least we couldn't when we tried it for a Fantasmic package in June (found it on the DIS). We had both of us on the phone, and the CM got the supervisor and they still said they couldn't transfer it, due to the CC. Luckily, the nice DISers just let me keep it under her name and CC.

Maybe someone else has had better results??

I had the DISer who was canceling CRT tell me when they were going to call and cancel. I called around the same time (a minute later, I think it was -- that was 2 years ago) and got the resie. I suppose you can call at the same time and tell the CM what you're doing ("My friend is calling to cancel right now and I want to grab her reservation.") That way you avoid the minuscule chance that 1 minute will make a difference
