December 12 - 19, 2009 Western Magic

We also have worn the DIS green wristbands on other cruises. It's just a fun way to be know someone is DIS'er. Where were they ordered from Oriental Trading? Anyone interested? I can check it out.

The ones we have look like they came from www.reminderband.com. We weren't allowed to put anything disney trademarked, but we have a palm tree, then 2 lines of text - DCL Magic 12-6-08 Pirates in Paradise and then an anchor. Ours are bright green with blue text. They ended up costing $2/each I think and we were able to order them in 3 different sizes to accommodate everyone. I think the minimum order was 50 adult bands to get that price.

Here is the cheapest place I've found. One size, $1.00 each. The difference between adult sizes and children was about 1/2 inch. This was for 100. Price could go down if we needed more.

These were pretty basic compared to. What is everyone willing to pay?

Hey all,

Ya know at first I was a little bummed when I had to pay off the balance of the cruise. Kinda made me wonder if we had the necessary $$$ to book any excursions, etc. However, I overcame the economic frustration and booked the following:
1) Key West - President Truman/White House thing...I'm going it alone, as the wife and kids are not interested.
2) Grand Cayman - 7 Mile Beach...it better be well worth the $125 for family of 4!! (any thoughts?)
3) Palo for my b-day (12/16) dinner...last time I tried dinner @ Palo we were caught in a 'mild' tropical storm...I of course felt like I was gonna puke, kinda ruining the experience.

Since booking the stuff, I am in a much better mood! :cloud9:

So when are people meeting on board and who else has 5-7 year olds who want to get them all together? We are flying into Orlando the night before and staying at the hotel in the airport. In 2007 we hung out the next morning with others waiting in the lobby. (We actually met them @ LAX cuz we were all on the same Delta flight) It was very nice for the girls to meet other kids asap so they could hang with them immediately thereby freeing up wife and I to have adult time. Lemme know.:thumbsup2

Yea for booking some fun stuff! I hear you though about finding ways to ensure you have enough money for the fun.

We're signed up for the 7 mile excursion though for awhile when it wasn't able to be booked, we were planning on just doing it ourselves. It sounds very easy and fairly inexpensive to do it on your own. Everyone said it's about $5/per person to take a taxi to one of the public areas on the beach. A little bit more may buy a daypass to the marriott or something like that to get access to a pool as well but I'm not sure about that. Lunch and drinks would need to be on your own. I'll probably stick with disney only because I struggle with squeezing the little one especially into crowded taxis and vans.

We're flying in the night before and are currently booked at the Hyatt on points though I may consider priceline or hotwire if the mood strikes me. I think we get in just before 5pm. I'll have 1 almost 6 yr old and a newly 3yr old if you want to meet up.

BTW, since we're discussing our children's ages, my daughter is 4 and son is 2. We'll be at AKV the night before the cruise.

We are flying out of LAX and staying at the Orlando Airport Hyatt (which is pretty nice actually). If anyone else is gonna be there too (flight or hotel) lemme know. Happy to get together beforehand. Maybe even have the little ones hang out too. BTW going with the family to Disneyland on 7/28. Should be a nice quiet day at the park with hopefully no crowds.:yay:

I just got a Fish Extender so count us in for the FE DIS tag as well!
GTY, HallsofVA, 2 adults - John & Cathleen (me), 2 kids - Chris (5) and Sophia (3)

Joining everyone for our first cruise in Dec. parents + DD 11, DD 7, DS 5. have read a couple of post and excited to see a other kids out there - my kids biggest concern about us taking them out of school is missing their friends right before the holidays. Would love for them to be able to meet a few others ahead of time. What is the FE everyone is talking about? On excursions - has anyone arranged snorkeling through Captain Marvin's in the Cayman's? We have used them when staying on the island - but as this is our first cruise not sure how easy it is to do your own excursions. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Anyone doing DW the week before?

We are flying in from Calgary on Dec 10th, staying CL at the Poly for 2 nights then we have booked Happy Limo to drive us to the Port on the 12th leaving about 11 or so..

I am shocked we were unable to get a reservation to eat at Ohana's on the 11th - even with the concierge trying for us. Anyone have any thoughts about where else we should try? We have one day tickets, so will be spending some/most of the day at Magic Kingdom.

We may still just try to walk up to Ohana's - we did do that last August when we were staying there and wanted to go a second time.

We are doing our own thing with Stingraysailing in Grand Cayman. Usually it is cheaper to do excursions on your own - the only thing is that you take a chance of not returning on time, etc if you are on a disney sponsored excursion, the boat will wait if you are late, if not, you are on your own. That being said, the Caymans operators deal daily with ships, etc. I know when I booked ours, Michelle (one ofht owners) knew what time the ship would get to port and which time they leave, etc so she could advise us as to which time would work best, etc..

We are doing our own thing on Cozumel as well...

The FE thing is a Fish Extender gift exchange. You buy/make something you hang from the fish above your room number in thehallway. Sometime during the cruise, each person/cabin will bring a little gift for your cabin, or each person in it... there is lots of ideas in some of the threads about fish extenders...

I sent you a PM and some links to show you what it is all about.

Welcome, and Yea! for another DS 5!!

OK, so now I'm 24 pages of posts behind. Just returned from number 22 (19 on the Magic, 3 on the Wonder), so I can now start thinking about this one!!!

Scooby--yes, we did Captain Marvin's in June, and had booked with them previously. EXCELLENT. Easy to locate off the tender terminal. Just look across the street to the left as you prepare to leave the tender area and you'll see their storefront. You pay here and are sorted into vans as to who is doing which trip. You use a credit card to book, but can use another method to pay. If your ship can't tender, they don't charge your card (yeah, been there, done that too). Great snorkeling, great island tour. Truly professionals. If you do a 1/2 day, you'll have the choice of being dropped back at the tender port or at a beach--if you were planning on a beach it will save you the cost of the taxi one way. They'll drop you at 7 mile beach or Sea Grape beach, your choice.

Our current group is myself and DD 18. She's thinking about inviting college room mate. I told her to think carefully--they get along well and she's a nice girl, but they will have just spent 14 weeks in the same room (sort of). Do they need another small room for a week or do they need a little separation? SO, she's thinking about it.

Yiddles--$125 for a family of 4 at 7 Mile Beach is a RIP OFF. The beach is free. That's right, ALL beaches at Grand Cayman are free. The beach runs from the tender area and extends for about (you guessed it) 7 miles. There is a beach shuttle bus for $3 per person each way. A taxi to 7 mile or Sea Grape is about $5 each way. Hmmmm...taxi 2 ways, 4 people = $40. $125 - $40 = one heck of a lot of beach chairs and snacks. Besides, doing it on your own means that you can stay as long as you want.

A thought....Captain Marvin's island tour (includes turtle farm, hell, rum tasting) is $30 per person and they'll drop you at the beach afterward if you desire. So, for $140 your family of 4 could do an island tour AND a beach. The island tour is more grown up, but the turtle farm is fun for all ages. Boatswain's park (where the turtle farm is) is another great place--prices depend on what you want to do there.

We are flying in the day before...will have to check arrival time, but as I recall it is dinner time. Will get a Priceline room for that night and at some point decide between rental car or DCL transfers to ship.

If you haven't booked flight home yet, you might want to look at them. Southwest went from $122 to $191 for our location JUST THIS WEEK. If I hang out till Monday I could do it for $91, but DD wants to get home for a while.

Just a note their are a lot of college/careers aged persons on this cruise (or so it seems) perhaps one of those in this group might get a meet up for them I bet they would have a blast! I have a daughter who will turn 20 the day after the cruise on the 20th...her golden birthday!

There's a certain logic to this. It's the week after finals and before the Christmas prices start! It fits our schedule...and many other college schedules.

To the family with food allergies--no worries. Fill out and fax in the Medical form. The head server and possibly the chef will meet with you on the first night and discuss your needs. They will advise you as to what is "safe" for her on the regular menu. They will cook special food for your daughter. If she has a couple favorite recipes, bring them along--they'll fix them. They will let you see the menu the day before to choose something and will prepare it in a special area of the kitchen to avoid cross contamination or will alter the recipe to suit your needs. It is the easiest vacation you'll ever do with the allergy issues. AT THE Buffets....talk to the person at the door--they will get a head server or chef to go thru the buffet line with you and advise you.

Palo booking--each adult is allowed one of each meal--one dinner, one brunch, one tea. Don't panic if you can't get what you want in advance. 1/2 of the ressies are held back and not available on line. After boarding, go to "Palo ressies" which is usually in Rockin Bar D. They will be happy to help you. At that time you can also be wait listed for a second ressie if desired. For instance, you already have one dinner, one brunch, one tea but you'd like a second dinner--they will wait list you. If it isn't full after the first day, you'll get it.

Can you tell that I'm reading thru back posts and commenting? I suspect that your 4 year old will be bored on the island tour. Do the butterfly farm on your own. The turtle farm on Grand Cayman is also good for kids. Both Key West and Grand Cayman are totally easy to do on your own and quite safe. The aquarium at Key West is ok for the very young set. Anyone over 10 or 11 might be bored.

Unless you will use the rainforest every day, the cruise length pass isn't a good deal. You can't use it the embarkation day unless you want them coming in and opening doors every 10 minutes while they do tours...or you plan to miss dinner or the show the first night. So, right off, you're down to 6 days. 6 X $16 = $96. 5 X $16 = $80....so if you miss one day, you could have bought it daily. They try to hype you on the first day "we only sell so many cruise length passes and there are 2000 adults on the ship." In 22 cruises, I've never been denied use when I wanted a one day pass. Also, they offer SOME spa services that include rainforest time...no discount if you already have the pass.

OK, put us down for FE...gty at this point, DD 18 Koren and mom.
On the FE topic...I don't know if I'll do my idea or not, but in order to avoid offense to anyone--is there anyone doing FEs who doesn't celebrate Christmas?
