Debt Dumpers 2024

My coworker said to take anything with a tag to a second hand store like Plutos Closet or something like that. And they'd buy them. Might even buy gently used clothes. I really need to clean out closets because I have t-shirts I haven't worn in the 2-1/2 years since we moved to DFW.

Platos closet. I wouldn't count on them buying anything. They are picky and are only going to buy stuff they know will sell, they don't just buy anything. I'd google for some recent reviews.

We have a Plutos Closet but I've never been in it. My old clothes are so old by the time I'm done with them, I doubt anyone would actually pay for any of it.
If you have any old hangers, I'd put the stuff you want to sell on a hanger before taking it to them. It makes it easier to get a good look at each item. If they're not willing to sell your clothes for you, I'd try a yard sale.
If that doesn't work, I'd contact Purple Heart. They come and pick up right off my front porch. It's so convenient. I think Red, White & Blue does also and Vietnam Veterans of America. I don't know if you have these in TX.

This is how the baby clothes consignment store was too. It had to be popular name brand stuff without the slightest hint of a stain. I'm sure they know what sells and what won't.

I like Pluto's Closet better.
 pluto:

I've never gone in to shop or sell. I don't generally follow trends so I wouldn't have anything they'd want or I would want but I've read the stories on sm of them not buying stuff that's in style and in good condition. Whatever they're doing obviously works though for as long as they've been in business.

I agree completely. They are free to run their business however they like.

Look at Green Drop and see if they are in your area.. it's a donation site local to me in NJ, but it's for big organizations so Idk if it's nationwide. They'll pick up anything and I use them for donations.

With that said, I am a BIG proponent of FB Marketplace. I have made thousands over the years. Heck, I made a few hundred this month alone selling my son's old video games.

I list all types of stuff- from old shoes that are in good shape for $5, to rare video games for $$$, and it all sells eventually. If you don't have a space issue, just leave it listed and renew the post each week. This past week I sold a toy and a sweater that I had listed for over 2 years. I have a "Marketplace space" in my closet, so it doesn't bother me if the items are in boxes in that closet, so I just let them sit until they sell. When I get fed up I donate. Frankly, when we were moving I listed so much stuff that I was able to pay for our painters in cash (not a huge project, but still, a lot of money I didn't need to put out).

In the beginning you may get scammers. I don't now bc I have so many reviews, they know I'm a serious seller. My main tip is do not text- all communication goes through Messenger on FB. Scammers always want to text.

I also do porch pickup. I won't meet anyone anywhere. I leave the item in a bag on my porch, money goes under the mat. I have sold thousands of items and nobody has stolen from me yet, although I do accept the risk this could happen. My personal price point is $30- if I am selling it for more than $30 I will meet you at my door and exchange the item for cash. Anything below that I accept the chance. Obviously YMMV here and it depends where you live, but for me this has worked... I started selling in 2017 or so (not 100% sure, but around then?) and haven't looked back.

I've considered FBM, but I've never actually done it because I don't know enough about it. I appreciate the tips! I may try it with some stuff I wanna get rid of.

i wouldn't be keen on doing porch drops or at your home pickups b/c if you are in the habit of selling a particular category of items (like my oldest w/anime and computer games) it can clue a theif into your location where likely your personal/more valuable collectables are.

My general way of pricing is I list it for about 1/2-2/3 of the price of whatever it is sold for if it's new/sealed/still in its packaging.

If it's used but has value (like video games) I list if for the average of what it has SOLD for (not listed) on eBay.

Other items generally are $5-20 depending on what they are.

I'm so apprehensive about meeting in public that I'm not about to give someone my home address. Absolutely not.

I know meeting at home is def not for everyone- The way I look at it is my address is public if you search my name, it's not some super secret thing. If you own a house, and you have a name, anyone can put two and two together.

But, yes, the police stations are great for meeting. My only reason for doing my porch is so many times people don't show. This way it has zero inconvenience for me... it's out there, if you don't come, I put it back in the closet. If I go sit at the police station 4x a week (my average weekly sales) I'd DEF be waiting for people 2-3x a week, minimum. People rarely come when they say they will. As a full time working mom of two younger kids, time is money and I'm not doing that, but I totally respect people being apprehensive of their home. I also don't sell anything valuable or rare that would make me a target... I clearly sell stuff any household with two kids would have lol!

I'm the same way. I'll set it on my porch. If they don't have time to swing by, drop money in the mailbox and pick it up at your convenience, they most likely won't show up somewhere at an agreed upon time.

But I also do several "curb alert" posts and also porch pick ups for the sensory kit business, so I'm pretty lax on everything.

it being so close to the end of the year I just did my updated budget book for 2025 and as a result I was struck by how much inflation has impacted day to day expences. looking at the numbers I entered at the end of 2023 and despite increasing many by as much as 10% for 2024 it was GUTTING to see how much MORE certain areas increased (esp. insurances). i'm increasing the allocations to some areas by far more for 2025 :(

I wish I'd done a budget last year, so I could see this. That said, I see it every time I go to the grocery store. The amount Walmart is now charging for groceries should be a crime. Stuff has doubled (or more) in the last 2 years. It's impossible for a couple with no kids to eat cheap. We spend about $150 every time we go to the grocery store, and we get home and wonder where it all went becuase there's barely any food there. It sucks really.

I don't check in much with my progress against my goals, but I do read along regularly. Congratulations to everyone meeting goals and making progress!

My end of year checkin:

Really just want to highlight the one main accomplishment. I had a goal to reduce my mortgage by 50% and I came in at 50.6% reduction.

If all goes according to plan, mortgage free in 2025. Heading over to that thread now.

With the last 6 months being the way it was, I didn't really accomplish too much financially. I'm glad I'm making it out of the year with any money at all. I'm not upset about things, but I do wish it would have gone differently. I did get the food spending under control, which was huge for me. We rarely eat out now and I meal plan and make almost everything now.

I did knock off quite a few of the personal goals I had, so I'm happy there.

Looking forward to next year!

congratulations! keep plugging away at it-paying it off early is such a wonderful feeling :thumbsup2
It's depressing, isn't it? Meanwhile we're "lucky" if we see 1% raises. I'd given up on keeping a detailed list of spending because I'm getting good at doing it automatically (plus it's a lot of work, and I don't have time) but I'm considering going back to it. If nothing else just so I can track the increases.
I don't keep a detailed on day to day stuff, i'm good with it so long as the costs don't exceed the flat amount I have budgeted monthly for our 'household expenses' (groceries, gas, cleaning products...). I've have been able to see and track the increases in cost though w/o any effort on my part-i've gotten into the habit of doing the bulk of my grocery shopping at Walmart as grocery pickup (all except the stuff I want to pick out myself) and as a result if I go online to the Walmart site and pull up my account I can go back up to 5 years and view what I've purchased and how much i've paid for each individual item-talk about sticker shock:scared1: just looking at food items year over year is mind boggling.

I keep track of the stuff I pay non monthly. I just log them next to the yearly amount I've got budgeted to see where i'm at in estimating the yearly costs. I know every business has experienced cost increases but DANG, with the increases i'm seeing for stuff like pest and yard services year to year I have to imagine those are losing customers like crazy.
