Debt Dumpers - 2016

@ruadisneyfan2 Wow, what a thing to ruin your vacation! So glad your son is okay and hopefully you will be back home soon!

I participate in focus groups in Chicago through Focuscope and my kids participate in online groups through Kidzeyes and Teensyes. You can try searching for part-time opportunities on Craigslist in your area (search the ETC and part-time categories). That's how my oldest daughter found a few focus group opportunities.
Thank you for mentioning Kidzeyes! I have done a couple focus groups with my DD6 through companies that I'm signed up with in my area, but had never heard of Kidzeyes. I just signed her up, so hopefully we'll get something out of it. How often do your kids get surveys, and how much do they typically pay? I like doing focus groups, it's usually at least somewhat interesting and it's easy money. I'm doing one tomorrow, in fact. Now, do I put my $125 towards debt or vacation? :scratchin

They do about 1-2 surveys a month and they're worth $1 to $3. Occasionally, their responses will trigger a survey for me and they are awarded more points if I complete the surveys. Recently, my youngest DD was chosen for a 5 day online focus study that paid $150 and middle DD was chosen to be part of a 2 day online panel that paid $55.

I'm thinking about selling some items that I never use. Have any of you used eBay to sell stuff? Wondering what the best method would be - eBay or a yard sale.

I am excited! My hubby fixed our computer so I can go back to doing my user testing for side money and I am also about to start teaching childbirth classes. I decided to become certified and use my income from the classes for our homeschooling/disney income and I am really glad I did!
I have not started yet so I have no idea how much it will bring it. I am estimating $500 extra per month which would be wonderful (That is a Disney trip a year AND all my homeschooling extras in the bag)

Murphy is kicking our butts again.
Tuesday night we flew to WDW for a 2 night stay prior to a 3 night cruise on the Magic. We planned to meet friends at MK Wednesday then travel together to the port. We rented points at BWV and bought the dining plan. Got an ADR for Ohana for breakfast and BoG for dinner. Woo hoo, right?
We arrived at BWV around 10 pm. Unpacked a few things, slept, showered and went to the Poly for breakfast. While waiting for our buzzer to tell us our table is ready, we get a call from our neighbor that a massive tree has crushed our house. :faint:
Ds19 did not want to join us on this trip and thank God he was ok in his bedroom at the other end of the house. It's a rancher so the tree crushed the roof, furnace/AC in the attic, knocked our chimney into the backyard, cracked the ceiling in 5 rooms and reached all the way from the back corner to the front of the house bending the front gutters.
It hit our kitchen so hard, a branch pierced right through the refrigerator door and knocked it off its hinges. It jostled the gas meter away from the wall. So it will be a while til we're back in our house. The outside wall that faces our neighbor's yard (and the demon tree) is kind of wonky now, looking like it's not straight anymore. Darn roof was only 2.5 years old.
So needless to say, we could not cruise nor spend a day at MK with our house like that. We called the police & my dad to check on ds19. He thought it was maybe an earthquake & wasn't really sure what it was until he left his bedroom. It took a crew of firemen to get our cat into her carrier which she hates and my dad kept them both til we could get home. We figured we had to eat anyway and already paid for the DDP so might as well get 1 meal out of it. I spent most of the breakfast changing our flight to 2:20 pm that day. Yay SWA! We packed in record time, like less than 5 mins. From the gate at MCO, dh called our tree guy and contractor that we know while I called the insurance company. Before we boarded the plane, all 3 were set to meet us there in the am.

The house was condemned and we're living in an extended stay hotel which is pet-friendly so our kitty is here with us. It took a crew of 10 men with a crane to cut it into smaller pieces and crane it over to the front yard. Sad as it was to witness, they were such an incredible group of guys that were so professional. At least the roof could be tarped before the snow came on Friday but of course with no heat, we worry about pipes freezing.

Anyway, this was our 18th Disney cruise and I always buy trip insurance but for some dumb reason I did not purchase this time. :guilty::(:headache: (Insert smiley kicking himself here.)

Our TA said to send her an email explaining it all. I wouldn't expect a refund but if we could apply the funds to a future cruise, that would be great. We will need one by the time we move home again.

So instead of celebrating dh's birthday at MK, we had 14 hours in WDW which makes it the most expensive breakfast we ever had.:thumbsup2 RT flights for 3, $400 for BWV, $370-something for DDP. All for some bacon and waffles. Oh and a picture of ds15 with Mickey.:rotfl2: I tried to fake a smile but it wasn't easy.
So far I'm sticking with our snowball plan and hopeful that I won't have to abandon the whole thing for a while.

I am SO sorry! I am glad no one was hurt though

I'm thinking about selling some items that I never use. Have any of you used eBay to sell stuff? Wondering what the best method would be - eBay or a yard sale.

Dentam, I do a combo of eBay or Facebook groups. I did utilize Craigslist for a while, but there are some really creepy people out there! My hubby piddles with cars and bikes and he does ok on Craigslist.

I use eBay if it's a more desirable item or could sell for a bigger amount of money. Also, if i need a bigger audience. And don't forget you give ebay a cut of your sale!

Hell only froze over in the last few months causing me to get a Facebook account. Our Girl Scout troop has a secret group, I follow some Disney groups, etc. In not really "social" with my friends. There are a few local buy/sell/trade groups I've joined and sold extra household items, outgrown kids clothes, etc. No fees and you kind of get a feel for who you are dealing with because of their FB account. Often people will even post PPU for porch pick up...meaning you give your address, leave your item on the porch and they come by to get it and leave the money. You don't even have to be home. I like to meet at the grocery store, but sometimes it's hard to coordinate. The groups have an administrator, similar to the moderators on this site. If you have a problem, send them a P.M. and the problem is handled. Some bad people get banned from a group. Do a search on FB for buy sell trade group and use your town's name, etc. FB will also begin suggesting other groups for you. I also belong to some purse groups with nationwide members. It's a buy sell trade that mostly uses PayPal and you have to mail your items out. Again, carefully administered.

Hope that helps!

@dayvewc , where are you? You're too quiet! I'm curious to know how things are regarding the situation with your roommates fighting about your upcoming trip.

LOL. I've been lurking. Somehow, my problems with the roommates fighting just didn't seem quite as important as the the "tree falling on the house" issues.

If they have had another screaming fit, it was while I wasn't there. So, that is a plus at least. The one roommate is determined that he is going to invite himself on this trip, and I am just as determined that he won't. At this point, I have gotten him to admit that if he can't find someone to watch my dogs, he can't go on short notice since he was the one who was supposed to watch them for the week.

Now, what I'll do if he manages to find someone in the next week, I don't know.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack! Feel free to chime in with anything.

a couple of things on my end

1st I got a little loosey goosey and went $100 over in our spending last week (sigh) but I always put $100 from each back check back for just in case so it worked out I just hate to see that extra come and go.

2nd I am dropping my check for the Care Credit pay off in the mail tomorrow $520 yay which frees up $70 in the monthly budget

3rd we had our big area consignment sale this past weekend and I made $92, which is great considering how little I had in it. I spent about the same but I always save up for that throughout the year so that money didn't come from other resources. The check will be split between our vacation fund & DD savings account. That brings our vacation fund up to about $450 that is just found/extra money at this point. I like to use that kinda money on fun stuff and not bills, goodness knows I pay enough in bills.

and
4th we got our electric bill in the mail yesterday still higher than I wanted but we are $20 under budget for the month yay!

Hmmm. Maybe if he does find one, you say well he can't stay with you because he's not already listed on the room. :)

Well, I got my updated student loan monthly payment...:scared1:

Once we have DH's car paid off, which should be this summer, it will be manageable. But lord, is it high. Also, I just did the math and even with my new insanely high monthly payments, I'll still only be paying the interest for the next 10 months before I touch the principal. Keep in mind I've been paying for the last 15 months as well...

On a related note, does anyone know how long it usually takes to get your tax refund when you mail your taxes? I mailed mine last Monday, so I know I'll still have a little more to go, but hoping it won't be that long. Yeesh.

My tax return took about a week. However, I would guess that as we get closer to the height of tax season and more people are filing, it will take longer. I know the IRS site says their goal is to have a three week turn around max.

Sorry to hear about the student loan debt - blech!

Oh well that's not too terrible. I had to mail to MO from VA, so I imagine it took a few days to get there. Maybe early next week I'll hear something.

The student loan debt is a bummer, but I did it to myself knowing full well how much I would have. I'm not one to cop out and try to complain about them all the time and how unfair they are, but the interest rates on them do just seem ridiculous. Particularly since all mean accrued interest while in school thanks to Congress changing the student loan rates right as I started my first year of school. Literally, the first day of orientation we were told "if you have X loan, the first $20k will be interest free until you graduate, but everything else will accrue interest and will every year until you graduate." Yaaaaay.

I do exactly the same regarding ebay and Facebook groups.

NO, wasn't a hijacking. Just the problem with the tree, and making sure your DS and DC (Disney Cat) were doing well seemed more important than the drama of fighting roommies?

Hmmm. Maybe if he does find one, you say well he can't stay with you because he's not already listed on the room. :)

Not sure that will work. He's gone with me a couple of times in the past, and kind of knows how the resort/timeshare works.

You just need to tell him flat out "NO!!!" You're too nice & he knows it. He can't be that dense to not know you don't want him there, can he?
