Debt Dumpers - 2016

Murphy is kicking our butts again.
Tuesday night we flew to WDW for a 2 night stay prior to a 3 night cruise on the Magic. We planned to meet friends at MK Wednesday then travel together to the port. We rented points at BWV and bought the dining plan. Got an ADR for Ohana for breakfast and BoG for dinner. Woo hoo, right?
We arrived at BWV around 10 pm. Unpacked a few things, slept, showered and went to the Poly for breakfast. While waiting for our buzzer to tell us our table is ready, we get a call from our neighbor that a massive tree has crushed our house. :faint:
Ds19 did not want to join us on this trip and thank God he was ok in his bedroom at the other end of the house. It's a rancher so the tree crushed the roof, furnace/AC in the attic, knocked our chimney into the backyard, cracked the ceiling in 5 rooms and reached all the way from the back corner to the front of the house bending the front gutters.
It hit our kitchen so hard, a branch pierced right through the refrigerator door and knocked it off its hinges. It jostled the gas meter away from the wall. So it will be a while til we're back in our house. The outside wall that faces our neighbor's yard (and the demon tree) is kind of wonky now, looking like it's not straight anymore. Darn roof was only 2.5 years old.
So needless to say, we could not cruise nor spend a day at MK with our house like that. We called the police & my dad to check on ds19. He thought it was maybe an earthquake & wasn't really sure what it was until he left his bedroom. It took a crew of firemen to get our cat into her carrier which she hates and my dad kept them both til we could get home. We figured we had to eat anyway and already paid for the DDP so might as well get 1 meal out of it. I spent most of the breakfast changing our flight to 2:20 pm that day. Yay SWA! We packed in record time, like less than 5 mins. From the gate at MCO, dh called our tree guy and contractor that we know while I called the insurance company. Before we boarded the plane, all 3 were set to meet us there in the am.

The house was condemned and we're living in an extended stay hotel which is pet-friendly so our kitty is here with us. It took a crew of 10 men with a crane to cut it into smaller pieces and crane it over to the front yard. Sad as it was to witness, they were such an incredible group of guys that were so professional. At least the roof could be tarped before the snow came on Friday but of course with no heat, we worry about pipes freezing.

Anyway, this was our 18th Disney cruise and I always buy trip insurance but for some dumb reason I did not purchase this time. :guilty::(:headache: (Insert smiley kicking himself here.)

Our TA said to send her an email explaining it all. I wouldn't expect a refund but if we could apply the funds to a future cruise, that would be great. We will need one by the time we move home again.

So instead of celebrating dh's birthday at MK, we had 14 hours in WDW which makes it the most expensive breakfast we ever had.:thumbsup2 RT flights for 3, $400 for BWV, $370-something for DDP. All for some bacon and waffles. Oh and a picture of ds15 with Mickey.:rotfl2: I tried to fake a smile but it wasn't easy.
So far I'm sticking with our snowball plan and hopeful that I won't have to abandon the whole thing for a while.

Another darn tree-on-home situation! Was it your tree, from your yard? The tree and Murphy wins this round, but you will be victorious in the end! Keep your head up and come to us when you need to vent. Sending you all the best wishes we can! Prayers, thoughts, hugs....

Oh goodness! Very glad your DS is ok. I hope the cleanup process goes as smoothly as possible.

First and foremost, thank heavens your DS is okay!!

What a horrible thing to have to deal with. Sending prayers your way!

I'm so sorry this has happened to your family but thank god your son and kitty were not injured.

Oh. My. Goodness. That is just awful!!! ((HUG)) I don't even know what to say!
Oh my...that is terrible. Murphy really hit hard! I feel for you, that must have been such a horrible ordeal. I am SO SO glad your son was not hurt. What a blessing that is. Houses can be repaired so focus on your son being safe. I hope this all gets resolved quickly and you aren't out of your home too long. Sending prayers your way.

It was our next door neighbor's tree. They are wonderful neighbors and we each cat sit for each other when we travel instead of asking family to trek in from further away. They take care of their home and property so I can't knock them at all. They are always making some improvements or maintenance and dh has done many side jobs at their home. They have a regular lawn service. He said the tree was just trimmed in January. She feels soooo bad and feels responsible and couldn't even come outside while the crane was there. She can't stop thinking what if ds18 was hurt or standing at the fridge when it happened. (We'll all need therapy by the time this is done. lol)
The whole root ball loosened from all the rain then strong wind just knocked it down. It was a healthy tree estimated between 90-100 years old.

Thanks everyone! We are hanging in there. It's so frustrating how insurance companies slow things down. Our contractor could have the roof done by the end of Tuesday.:hyper: I understand since the ins company is the one paying for it, they have to get a good look in there and assess the damage.

I think it was bcwife that this happened to a few years ago and it was still raining into her bedroom when it happened. Then IIRC, it happened again. :faint: We are grateful that it was the day after the rain and also that it really hasn't been so cold here since the tarp doesn't hold much heat in and with no furnace it's chilly in there. The thermostat read 49 degrees inside yesterday. It really could be soooo much colder than that. I'd get a space heater but they are such a fire risk.

So some things are not so bad as they could be. :thumbsup2

I think I will be venting a lot here in the coming months.

Many years ago, something similar happened to us. We'd had a TON of rain, more than normal, and it was a little windy and this HUGE tree was uprooted and landed on our above ground pool! They said that it was because all the rain had loosened the root ball!

I'm so happy that your son & cat are ok! You know that I can feel your pain on the whole tree on the house, they just finished my house last week from my May incident. Sending pixiedust: your way!

There simply aren't words to express to you, I am so glad no one was hurt, I can't even imagine dealing with all that you are going through right now, good luck in the months to come.

Thanks everyone! Angeejoe, was that you or bcwife that had this happen twice?

We always loved all the trees in our neighborhood until one of the tree guys asked me if I still like trees.
This, as he was taking down 2 more in same neighbor's yard and same crew did 3 in the yard of my other neighbor that day. Not so much I admit and I look at leaning trees everywhere I drive now.

Oh my goodness that is horrible! So happy that your son is okay! Your story and the other poster who had the tree fall on her house is exactly why I want to get two trees cut down that are right outside my house! I am so paranoid that their going to fall on my house. I wish I had more of the land cleared out back because those are a couple hundred year old trees - huge! But they will probably just have to stay there.
I hope everything works out with the insurance company and their able to get you home soon!

OMG!! I am so sorry! How awful! Thank goodness none of you were hurt, what a nightmare. It seems like you have a great attitude about it though. I believe it was @Angeejoe who was also dealing with the tree on the house issue. Perhaps you can trade notes!

In May the tree fell on my house, in December a tree fell on my shed my dad built me. 2 trees in one year...
