Debt Dumpers - 2015

I can't say Murphy moved in but we have been without power since Tuesday. At least we were able to borrow my parents portable generator and save the food in the fridge n freezer.
I'm trying to look on the bright side. My electricity meter isn't spinning away like usual so our bill should be extra low.
;)

Well that's a bummer! Did you have a storm?

They're dropping off our roofing supplies today & tomorrow they're going to install a whole new roof as it's supposed to rain here....again. Never let a tree fall on your house, lol.

Terrible storm. Lots of trees and telephone poles down. Thank God none fell on our house. Hope it goes well with your roof installation. It poured for about 20 mins when we got a new roof 2 yrs ago but they quickly covered with tarps and resumed again when it stopped.

Thanks!! They fixed the structural problems in the beams in the garage & above the bedroom, then fixed the roof. Next is the new roof & new skylight in my den. Then they will start the work inside in the bedroom. Last would be the new patio. Then we replace the lighting, the grille, patio set & picnic table. This is quite the process!

How long do they expect for your power to be out?

Tonight or tomorrow.
Makes me want to install a whole house generator. It automatically kicks on and uses natural gas.
We rarely lost power when I was a kid and it seems to happen more frequently and takes longer and longer to restore as time goes on.

Terrible storm here yesterday during rush hour. Over 2 inches of rain in less than an hour along with hail that shredded all of the plants that were just starting to come back from the last hail storm three weeks ago. Very discouraging for people like me who garden for a living.

STILL haven't received my escrow funds back from my mortgage company. My house closed over three weeks ago! I called them last week and they said they have ten business days from closing to get it sent out and that I should receive it this week. Well, the mail has come for the day and nada. Starting to get really annoyed!

Well folks, Discover just upped our credit limit, so now I'm considering switching our BOA card that has around a $3,700 balance over to "consolidate" just like I did with the Disney Chase card balance. That would leave us with just 2 cards with a balance, which even if the amount overall will be the same, it will save us over the 15 months that we have to pay it off because of the ZERO interest rate! The interest monthly on the BOA card has been around $40, and I'm only paying about $30 over the min. due at this point, which I could still pay that amount but just to Discover instead. Sound like a plan? Then we still have the behemoth card left, so that's why we would be left with 2. It just seems more doable to me than continuing to pay on the smallest balance one, especially if we can do 0% on 2 of them, which saves approximately $130 month in interest for the total of the 2. I will be calling Discover in the morning to do the switcheroo! Small steps, right??

Sounds like a good plan! And it will be nice to see your amount go down when you make your payment!

I would call tomorrow if you still haven't received it. It's been more than 10 days since you closed!

Did the neighbors ever come over and say anything? Did you have to go through your insurance company?

They claimed that they don't have to mail it out until 10 business days after closing, and they had my closing date as the original one before the buyer asked it to be moved up two days. So they were supposed to mail it out by last Friday. I will definitely be calling them tomorrow!

Just jumping in after 1116 posts! We are serious and are eager for the freedom of having no debt at all, not answering to anyone or anyTHING! We do not have CC debt but have a car loan and a mortgage on an investment property that we are currently renting with the rent paying the mortgage. We just started the Dave Ramsey plan and are on a budget.

What I'm struggling with and perhaps you can help me is: how not to spend? It just seems like things come up. Things that are even budgeted for but I would rather NOT have to buy them. I struggle with the urge to consume but disgusted with the thought of spending money. My kids need something or I need clothes for an event, or a summer activity, or lunch with a friend, or a birthday party, or my good shampoo or foundation runs out, etcetera. Again, it may be in the budget but it adds up quickly. How do you all say no?
This was hard for me, but put yourself on a "no clothes buy" for one year. It is sort of liberating not shopping for yourself. Wear what is in your closet. We moved to a new home and I found out I had a ton of clothes. I packed away Seasonal clothes and when we moved, I was embarrassed to actually see how much I had. So I put myself in the "no buy zone". Kids need clothes, since they grow out of clothes fast. But do you notice they wear the same clothes every 3 days, since you wash clothes often? Commit to only shop for them 3 times a year. We used to school shop for clothes in May/June when winter clothes were marked down, then we would hit the clearance rack for summer clothes when school clothes came out in Auguest. another good time to buy clothes is after Christmas, with all the returns and then it hits the clearance racks. With shampoo's I consider that a staple. if I don't get good hair products, I look like "the The Freeze Mister, I have very thick curly hair, that is one thing I do not scrimp on, hair products.

Got an unexpected refund check in the mail from my insurance company today for my homeowner's insurance. Over $250 that I'll put toward cc payments - woohoo! I love surprise money! :bounce:

Yay for you! Surprise $$ is the best!

I love surprise money too. (Who does not? ) I opened our water bill yesterday and I have a $200 credit! I was making auto payments and this bill comes quarterly so I was really shocked. Guess I need to adjust that one in my autopay. Maybe I'll call them and ask for a check....could put it toward something else.

We've had a credit on our utility bill (covers water, sewer & garbage) they normally auto bill us, I'll have to check to see how much of a credit we have left since it started last month. Yay for credit!!

I did it! I called Discover yesterday and transferred over the $3700 balance from the smallest cc bill, and I also just paid off the remaining small balance from Chase, so now we are down to 2 large cc's. The best news is, even if I did it in 2 different transfers, (only because they just increased our credit limit so I was able to) it's to the same company (Discover) so since I did them so close to each other, they are both due in Sept. 2016. Please help support me in paying it off by then~with me being off for a month in July & our daughter getting married & us not knowing if we are moving in September (DH would have a job for sure if we did move, I would not) I may have to make smaller payments towards the Discover for July & August, but then I want to start making larger payments in Sept forward, I am bound & determined to have it paid off, ironically the exact end date of the 0% rate is on my birthday, September 20! (Sept 2016) So what a great birthday present that would be, huh? :flower1: Here's wishing everyone else continued success in everything you do, especially paying down debt! We can do this!!:fish:

I'm going to get this in writing to make me more accountable, I plan on having no more cc debt as of December 2017. It may seem like a long time off to some, but it is realistic for me, and doable. When I'm down to the last cc, I hope to be able to transfer it to a 0% card (maybe Discover will come to the rescue again once the current balance is paid off!) because by then the remaining balance on the last card would fit perfectly as far as the credit limit is concerned. Thanks everyone for your support!!

You're doing great with your plan and congrats on setting this goal! Hope everything works out great for you in terms of the possible move, etc!!

What kind of hair products do you use? I have thick curly hair as well and have a problem maintaining the frizz!! Would love to find products that work. I wish I could find something where I didn't have to have crunchy hair to try to maintain the frizz!

That's such a bummer about the weather & the escrow! I hope you have good mail tomorrow!!
