Debt Dumpers - 2014

Our good news: tomorrow I'll be paying off cc #7. :cool1:

The bad: now I get to funnel our snowball for the next few weeks to the $1200 needed for our termite treatment. :(

Still swimming here!

Congratulations, sounds like you have been making great progress!

Its always something, isn't it? We just had a bunch of dead/dying arborvitae removed and found one side of our fence has rotted through, so thats where my money is going for the next couple of months! :rotfl2: We'll do the labor ourselves, but cedar is spendy!

Yes, but it looks so nice! :thumbsup2 You dread spending the money but at least you will see how good it looks when it's done. I felt that way about getting a new roof. Really cleans up the whole look of the house.

Just kill me now...on top of the dryer, van repairs and a plumber scheduled for tomorrow, it's 80 degrees in my house and the outdoor AC unit won't go on. Hope someone can come out tomorrow before the long weekend. Oh, and Ds's clarinet needs repairs too. I think if one more thing happens, I'll seriously cry.

Ugh, I'm so sorry. :( It really does all come at once.... :crazy2:

Just keep swimming :fish:

You'll get through it!

When i feel overwhelmed i find it helpful to get it all out of my head and onto paper. Then prioritize what can wait and what cannot.
Maybe hang clothes on the line or use a laundromat for a few weeks while working on more important things?
Personally for me AC would be at the top of my list & probably would even resort to charging it on a cc. I can sarifice a lot but not AC.
I might even give up food for it. :upsidedow

I hope things work out soon!

Last time the ac wouldn't come on the repair guy said the unit was dirty inside and hosed it down...

My brother does HVAC & recommends we do this a few times per year. Also every few years ours just needs a charge. Hopefully it's a minor repair.

I have been there before. I agree with the PP who said to sit down, breathe deeply and prioritize. Two summers ago our AC wouldn't blow cold air and it was fine on freon. We had a repairman out and he said we needed a new unit. We were devastated. Ended up getting a second opinion and it was only a $100 part. Try not to get too stressed until you know what the problem is and don't be afraid to get 2 opinions. For us it was worth a second service fee!

Not long ago our fridge and dryer went out at the same time. They were both expensive models but their warranties were expired. I bought the cheapest ones I could find at lowes and added 4 yr protection plans. Did the 18 month no interest since I have a lowes card. Already paid them off and the warranty has already come in handy on the dryer.

We bought the new dryer a few weeks ago and the car needed repairs last week, so that was done and unfortunately, put on the credit card. AC definitely was a priority and the guy was able to come this morning. Sink absolutely needed doing because we had no water pressure at all coming out of the kitchen sink. Clarinet needs doing bc DS takes band as a class and needs it so his grade won't suffer. This is after going several weeks with just a trickle of water in the sink and not needing the AC bc it wasn't that hot. So, with the exception of the clarinet, which I'll deal with tomorrow, everything is fixed and I used my debit card, so no extra debt. It just wasn't how I envisioned spending $400 today.

Edited to add, the heat pump fuse was bad and it needed coolant. I would have been unhappy i called someone in to just hose it down when I can do that.

It's so frustrating but really it could have been much worse for the AC. All you can do is pick yourself back up, count your blessings, and move on.
Life is a roller coaster sometimes.

Yup. I'm already over it. Bring on the long weekend! :)

Sorry to hear about your parents. I hope recovery continues well for both of them. Glad to see you have a sense of humor about it all happening at once. You know this will all pass and somehow it's all going to work out. Just think how lucky you are to be able to help your family through this (and how lucky they are to have you). Some families don't have that option for whatever reasons.

Thanks. I am grateful that I still have my parents and can do anything for them. It's just stressful when it all happens at once.

All you can do is take one day at a time.

Hopefully your SO can get another job quickly. Dh has been laid off 4x since we've been together but luckily he's really handy & could do side work until the next job. One of those times was 2 weeks after we bought our house which was a fixer upper. :faint: Then 4 days later had a baby. We were so glad we went with the smaller, less expensive of the 2 homes we wanted.

Hang in there...

Thanks. We'll see how things work out. I'm just going along one day at a time.

I don't post often (or really at all) but this thread seems to be full of like-minded folks! Hi!

Well, I pretty much blew it this weekend. :sad2: We spent a bunch of money that we didn't budget in YNAB and kept saying "we'll just move it from ____ category"

I really need to stop that. I don't think I am budgeting enough in the categories I need, and I end up pulling from my 'Unexpected Expenses' categories, like my car fund and stuff like that. Just because I don't need that money NOW, I keep pulling from it - and I know I am shooting myself in the foot for later on.

We budgeted $50 for our garden this year, and ended up spending $40 on the veggie and herb packets. So, then we went back out and spent another $29 on flowers and stuff and said 'Oh well.... we have the money'

Blah. I am slipping a bit and need to start forcing myself to say NO. :headache:

Welcome! I have learned a lot of great things so far from this thread :woohoo:

Hi everyone! Hope everyone had an awesome 3 day weekend. We are moving forward with paying off the wedding and honeymoon. :) The honeymoon will be paid off tomorrow and then it is just the wedding portion. We are on schedule, but I still stress. I hate having debt...especially after having the taste of being debt free. Joe and I have talked about short term and long term bills and loans. The only loans are my house and his car. Then the one CC is his business CC that he makes standard charges and payments every month. It is a really low balance.

Out of an $11,000 wedding and honeymoon total, we are down to $3326.79. 4 more paychecks to have it paid off. We can do it between the both of us but that total still stresses me out. We are having really no fun inbetween.

Going to start looking at free activities for the kids this summer. The kids are going out of town with family next week, so that will save money on babysitting and food. Then Joe goes out of town for 3 weeks for work the week after and again that will save on food.

I don't know what I am more excited for...the wedding or going back to Disney!! LOL

I haven't been keeping up with everyone..when the kids are gone next week and while I am "spring cleaning" I will get caught up. I hope all is going well and everyone is moving that balance down. :)

We moved into a new house almost a year ago (1 year in 3 days!) and the yard had an incredible garden. It was super nice, until we realized we couldn't keep up with it. :headache:

By July, it looked like the Jungle Book out there! I worked really hard to keep it "under control" but eventually just took hedge clippers and cut everything down.

When it started getting warmer, we decided to remove everything and toss down grass seed.... after several hours of realizing we weren't cut out for this, I found a landscaper. I figured we would end up spending more time (and possibly more money) being angry and tired and even though we didn't really have the money to spend, I'd be really happy to hand over my credit card to a professional and have it done in a day, and not have to spend the entire summer being annoyed and embarrassed by the overgrown mess that used to be this beautiful, meticulous garden.

Even though the cost made me go :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: , we should have it paid off by July, and I am so excited to have a BBQ out there next month!
