Debt Dumpers - 2013

Very well said :thumbsup2 You are all doing a fantastic job - and welcome newcomers! I haven't been on for a couple days (I think) - have been a little busy online Christmas shopping :)

I totally agree on the bolded part! :)

As for the "too busy Christmas shopping" comment. :cool1:

Don’t deprive yourself completely.

While you’re doing all these great, disciplined things with your money, don’t forget to let loose and have a little fun with it sometimes. Being too strict with your spending can lead to feelings of deprivation, which in turn can lead to spending binges. Starvation budgets are much like starvation diets. When you cheat, you tend to cheat big.

So be sure you budget FUN in your life, a movie, a trip to the zoo, whatever you enjoy as a family.

We are bombarded with new and better gadgets, toys, and opportunities for fun every day, all day. If we’re not careful, the seeds of discontent can take root and before we know it, we’re spending money on things to fill a need we didn’t even know we had.

Remember what your Mom told you-don’t pay attention to what everyone else is doing, just worry about yourself and your goals.

This was my thoughts exactly. I'd like to be smarter with bill paying and pay closer attention to priorities but it doesn't mean we're 'fasting'. ;)

Next week dh's Kohls charge will be paid off. :cool1:
I always have paid enough monthly to not have to pay interest on it but still will be nice to have our third 'snowball'. The first was ds13's sax which he played for 3 yrs. Of course now that we paid an arm & a leg for it, he doesn't want to play anymore. :( The 2nd was refinancing our mortgage last spring, saving $260/month.:woohoo:

I've been putting the sax and refi savings each month into savings to build up more emergency fund. By the New Year I think we'll be good enough to start attacking our overdraft protection acct and knock that out.:thumbsup2
It's very uplifting.
Dh & I agreed to keep Christmas gifts to each other small this year. We've had an exciting year of travel and feel very content. I don't need more stuff.

Hope you're all doing well! :grouphug:

I just wrote the check and sealed the envelope to pay off DS's last medical bill!!! I've just got to pay off his medication from last month and I'm done!!!!

I didn't reveal this earlier but i feel I should share. I hope no one judges me. Because my ex-husband didn't live up to his end of the agreement he left me with a mortgage I couldn't afford for a house I wasn't living in totaling more than $160,000 after fees and interest from his non-payments. After learning the house would sell for maybe $30,000 at auction I decided to file bankruptcy. I claimed my credit cards and such too. I kept some small debt for some of DS's current doctors so I feel like I sort of cheated but it would've taken me over 15 years to pay off the bank even though I was only on the mortgage. I haven't lived in that house for over 3 years and I couldn't have evicted him even if I took over payments. My bankruptcy will be discharged next month so I'm working on paying off my student loans and my car. I hope no one thinks I'm a horrible person for doing so. I've been judged in my every day life so I was a hit ashamed to even mention it here. However I love this thread and everyone has been so awesome!!!! I'm so excited to only owe $22,000 now! I think I can still pay off my car next year and then really hit my student loans hard. For the first time in 6 years I feel like I can breathe!

Congratulations!

Nobody on this thread is gong to judge you. We are all here for the same reasons, right?

This is my first chance to check in all week. Started my new job and it's gong great, but the learning curve is huge. Still waiting for my last few freelance checks but found out my first paycheck will be on the 15th, so that is great. My husband is a contractor and his agencies had enough money to work through today. His company is trying to figure out how to create work for and pay their employees next week. Have been paying $20/day in parking this week, ugh. I submitted a monthly parking application and while it won't be cheap, at least it will be convenient and if we decide to go explore restaurants in the area on the weekends sometime like DH is dying to do, parking will be paid for. I have eaten out with coworkers twice this week already, but the company paid for it. One was a welcome lunch for me, and apparently since a lot of us telecommute several days a week, the CEO is trying to lure us to the office on Thursdays with free lunch. Not bad :)

Have only just started catching up on recent posts in reverse order....keep up the good work everyone!

No one here is going to judge you. Hugs. I know that took a lot of courage to say that. Congrats on paying off the medical bill!

Since I don't work downtown, I have no idea what a parking application is. :confused3 lol But free is good! Glad you are being welcomed into your group. :) I wish I could telecommute again. I used to twice a week for 10 years, but our new SVP nixed that notion. dummy. lol And right when gas was going up and up.

Hope everyone had a great week! Big hugs to those that are stressing. Take it one day at a time and know that we are here for you.

OH MY GOODNESS Y'ALL!! I have my closing date set! 11-19. That gives me one day to paint and move and clean out of my apartment. YIKES! I still need to get approved again and lock in a rate sometime this month, so that is weighing on my mind...BUT I HAVE A DATE! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

Ok I’m going to judge you,

I know that you have been doing everything you can to take care of your son and pay for his medical/medication bills.

I know your ex pays child support whenever he is made to.

I know now that same ex didn’t make the payments he agreed to make, yet continued to live at the house rent free.

The mortgage company doesn’t care how they get the money from they just want the money.

I believe that cases like yours are what the bankruptcy laws are in place for, people that would never be able to pay or straighten these types of financial problems out in their lifetime.

So yes I can JUDGE you and my judgment is you have been trying to do the right thing for a very long time, take a deep breath and kick that mortgage to the curb.

Enjoy your fresh start from all that garbage you have had to carry for so many years. I am actually so proud of you for sharing your secret it's hard to live with and even harder to admit.

In your case you did make the best financial move for you and your son.

When you are ready to start building your credit back let us know. I'm sure you can accomplish that too.

Thank you for this. It made me want to cry but in a good way.

First time poster alert!

I am graduating college next spring and DF and I have a ton of debt. (About 30k between student and car loans) and I am committed to knocking out that debt ASAP. I'm also following the snowballing technique and I'm just really excited to start seeing results. My goal is May 2015 to be debt free!

That's great! Do it asap before the wedding, kids, mortgage, etc. These things only make it harder to pay off old debt. Sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock and bring my knowledge of today with me.

Me too. Just think where I'd be if I didn't invest so much in those short skirted outfits I just had to have for a night on the town!

No judging here. Had a friend who went through the same thing and a sister of another going through it now. 3 yrs she's been trying to keep things afloat while her ex is living in the house paying for nothing, refusing to sell. Sorry you had to go through all that stress but happy to hear you're climbing your way back to financial independence!

I would love to join! DH and I graduate college april 2014 :-) its been 5 years in the making. I'm 30, graduating with my RN and a mother of 3 wonderful children. DH is 31, graduating with his doctorate of physical therapy and we are desperate to get on the right track once we graduate. With school loans, past bad debt etc. ..I want to improve our credit so we can buy a house in a couple years. Plus id like to set up retirement plans, kids college fund, savings for emergency fund, downpayment on home and possibly a vacation account. These are only ideas I have and obviously will be reevaluated once we graduate and start working.
