'From Here to Eternity' actress Kerr diesStory Highlights
Deborah Kerr dead at 86; actress had suffered from Parkinson's disease

Kerr best known for kiss with Burt Lancaster in "From Here to Eternity"

Kerr also starred in "The King and I," "An Affair to Remember"

LONDON, England (AP) -- British actress Deborah Kerr, who shared one of cinema's most famous kisses with Burt Lancaster in "From Here to Eternity," has died, her agent said Thursday. She was 86.

Deborah Kerr was nominated for six Oscars, including one for "From Here to Eternity."

Kerr, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, died Tuesday in Suffolk, eastern England, he said.

Born in Scotland in 1921, Kerr began her career in regional British theaters and entertained the troops during World War II. Her first major screen role was in "Major Barbara" in 1941.

For many she will be remembered best for her clinch in the surf with Lancaster in the wartime drama "From Here to Eternity" -- regularly voted among the greatest screen kisses.

Other memorable roles included Anna Leonowens, the British governess who falls for the king of Siam in "The King and I"; with Lancaster, David Niven and Wendy Hiller in the film version of the Terrence Rattigan play "Separate Tables"; and as a nun in John Huston's "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison."

She was nominated for six Oscars.

Kerr is survived by her husband, Peter Viertel, two daughters and three grandchildren.

Oh I just love An Affair to Remember. Haven't seen the other movies though. Who was the other Hollywood person that died recently?

Very sad. So many great Hollywood actors and actresses are no more. :(

Teresa Brewer~ but indeed a celebrity icon ( singer) not Hollywood, I'll change that.

Loved her as Anna in the King and I. So sad to hear of another Hollywood legend passing on into the Heavens. She will be missed.:sad1:

A loss of another great actor! One of my favorite movies of all time is "The Chalk Garden" featuring Deborah Kerr and Haley Mills.

Another lady who will live on in my memory!

I wanted to be Deborah Kerr when I was little. I adored her in King and I.

My favorite Deborah Kerr story is from a radio interview some years back. In the mid 1980's she saw a TV filmscript she really wanted to do and called her agent to contact the producer and let them know that she was interested in it. It seems that the producer was one of those Hollywood wunderkind types who was only about 25 years old. He took the meeting, but apparently was idiot enough to ask her if she had ever been in a movie before. She said that everyone in the room just sort of gasped, and he had no clue how badly he'd insulted her. She pointed out the Oscar nominations, but the twit followed up with, "But have you done anything LATELY?" She did go on to do the movie; I think it was Reunion at Fairborough.

:sad2: And he is probably one of the many now Executive Producing movies we think are crap.

RIP Ms. Kerr.

Wow, she had a good life & definitely knew how to pick the leading men.

- Cary Grant (in "An Affair....) - being a guy, i thought it was cheezy (remember the Hank/Ryan film that made fun of it?)

- Yul Brynner - "King & I" - What a great movie. & they were both great in it.

- Burt Lancaster - "Eternity" - with the roll on the beach.

- Niven?? - (need to see that one).

- Also Robert Mitchum & Brando.
