Debit card got hacked....strange charges.

Twice I've received new debit cards from my bank because several members had their accounts compromised. Not necessarily through the bank, but some place a lot of members use. Say some one hacked into Target and stole a bunch of numbers. You might never shop at Target, but the majority of members do. So the bank will re-issue a new card to every one to prevent any further damage to other members. It's one thing to deal with a few members, it's another thing when it's a few hundred.

The imprint method is actually illegal. It's a federal law. The only exception is NY cab drivers. Interesting, but true. Also, it's illegal for more than the last 5 digits to print on a receipt.

How is it illegal? Every retail outlet in my area, plus my own workplace, will use the imprint method if their machines are down. We imprint, call to authorize, and complete the transaction.

From what I found most states have outlawed FULL credit card imprints( and receipts that print full cc#'s) or strictly limited their use. I couldn't find a federal law regarding imprints, in fact this link says that imprints are exempt from the federal law...

My Mom has a debit card for a vacation account. She NEVER uses this card, maybe 1-2 times a year. A few years ago charges starting showing up for self-serve gas stations in Hollywood, FL and for the longest time we couldn't figure out how it got hacked. Finally she remembered she called in a payment to Royal Caribbean with her card.
