Has anyone tried the Debbie Meyer Green bags or the ones for bread? Are they worth the price? How long do they last? Do you wash them after use?

I LOVE my Debbie Meyer bags!!!! I have the green ones for produce as well as the bread bags. Yes, they really work; before I would always end up having to throw out lettuce, cucumbers, green onions etc. that would go bad before I had a chance to eat them (my kids are not big veggie eaters). Not anymore; my veggies stay freshin the bags for a minimum of two weeks. Same thing with bread; it keeps buns and such fresh for weeks. I rinse them out when they're empty, and dry them inside out on my drain board. Definitely worth the $20 investment for the two different kinds of bags, IMO. I bought mine about 18 months ago, and they're all in great shape.

This is kind of funny; I want to make banana bread today, so a few days ago I took three bananas out of a Debbie Meyer bag to make sure they would be ripe enough. :lmao:

I've had mixed results with mine. If you see condensation building up inside the bag, you have to wipe it out with a paper towel. If that stays, it will kind of counteract the green bags.

It all depends if I remember to check them, or if DH just ignores the condensation. :rotfl:

Bed Bath and Beyond sells these discs (I believe they are called green life) in their kitchen gadgets department. You just throw one in your crisper drawer and they do the same thing. They work for 3 months. I absolutely love them! Before I would be throwing out bagged salad mix before the date on the bag but with the discs my bagged salad is good 2 weeks after the date. Unbelievable!

my MIL gave me a few...but I have a family of 5 and go through stuff quickly...and a forgotten squash in the bottom of this crisper still turns to mush in a green bag:rotfl:

Our newspaper did an article on these and they said in their experiments, regular ziploc bags worked the same.

I read a similar article, I thought it was consumer reports but I may have it wrong. They also said ziploc bags worked just as well.

The testers in the article must have been "doing it wrong." I bought green bags because we kept having to throw away lettuce we keep on hand for our tortoise. Now the lettuce lasts at least 3 times as long, which makes buying those bags with multiple heads in it a lot more worthwhile.

We experimented with a different green bag and ziplock. The ziplock actually worked better.

This place I go to has the Debbie Meyer Bread bags 10 for $2.00 For that price I think I'll try them, for my homemade bread. She doesn't have the produce bags but she has gotten them in in the past and uses them herself. She likes them.

I got a knock off brand at the Christmas Tree Shop a few weeks ago. They are called Forever Bags. They were marked down to $3.69 for 16 bags in 2 different sizes. Just started using them the other day. Worth a try at that price.

I have never used the bags I just wanted to mention a tip for lettuce. This is from my MIL just add a piece of paper towel to your zip lock bag with your lettuce. It does make it last way longer than without. Has anyone else done this?

Yes I have always done this. I wash the lettuce first so I started putting it in there to catch any water that was still there but it does seam to last longer than without it.

My mom got me some on clearance for .99 per box at Kroger a while ago. I must say they do work for the produce I have used them on. I haven't tried the bread ones though. I probably should since I don't use a lot of bread in my house.

Are you talking about the Ziploc brand of these green bags...they have them now...or regular plain ol' Ziploc's?

I think people are talking about actual ziploks. I can't imagine that, but then again, we would put bananas INTO a Green bag to get them ready for banana bread!

Yeah, bananas throw off quite a bit of moisture, and if you don't realize that you need to wipe the moisture away, you end up with the nastiest bananas you've ever seen.....

When I remember I have the Green bags and remember to use them, they work quite well for things that are NOT bananas!

I agree with this. I used to hang my bananas on a banana hook, but now that I have teens/tweens, they get eaten long before there's ever any danger of them going too soft.

I think we are talking about the Debbie Meyer brand of bags, made specially for produce or bread. I believe they are supposed to absorb the methane gas given off by vegetation. She also had bags for bread, gold bags (I think for produce as well) and now plastic boxes too.

I bought a knock-off version of these recently, called Forever Bags. I've only been using them for 3 or 4 days, so I haven't decided yet whether they are any good.

I have a terrible time keeping veggies fresh. I swear that I probably throw away more than we actually use.
