DEBATE: Shouldnt this ride be at wdw/dl????

Bob, BOB, BOB!!!!

What'd ya thinkin'?!?!?!

Sorry!! Not in Disney! No way, in any way, shape or form!

Sorry, buddy. As you know, I'm usually with you, but on this one I can't go along for the ride!! (even though I LOVE roller coasters too!!)

No NO NO........................................

This is not Disney! Or atleast the Disney we have known in the past. Disney is about theming, elegance and design, thrill is only a feature not the main course!!!

I don't see where this ride has any Disney features with the possible exception of "High Tech" but then again anyone can build it high and fast given the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$'s.

sorry bob, but im also a no. that thing is definitely not disney.

"This is not Disney! Or at least the Disney we have known in the past. Disney is about theming, elegance and design, thrill is only a feature not the main course!!!"

Care to step into Disney's California Adventure?

Bob,

You know, you might want to try getting Cedar Fair to become more like Disney in terms of service, cleanliness, theming, etc. I doubt that if Cedar Fair were to incorporate some of Walt's ideas in those areas that anyone would be disappointed. And if they are, they can always visit Magic Mountain.

But if Disney were to up its thrill quotient to that level there would be a lot of disappointed people. Disney themeparks were created with the idea that they were for people ages 2 to 92, and I doubt there will be many 92 year olds in line for that one.

Of course a ride like this cries out disney!!!!!!!
Now should it be a generic ride on a slab of concrete like Cedar Point will do, NO!!!
But put a ride like this in the middle of a mountain or show building with some great theming/great story and a finale of a drop like this ride would be total disney!!!!!
When Walt /disney Co put in matterhorn/space mountain they were top notch in technology for their time so their is no reason to believe that if he were alive today he wouldnt also use the top in technology to good use in make great attractions.
Hopemax, well i see few people 92 in disney parks as it is. And people in their 60's/70's ride roller coasters all the time and many are members of coaster enthusaist groups as i see them myself and not everybody is content having their thrill of the day be dumbo/cop.
DVC I always respect your thoughts/opinions but a ride using this technology, and maybe make it 320ft and 100 mph for a ending could be themed greatly to make a classic disney attraction. It could be done if the creativity is their, just like a great dark ride ala Indiana Jones/HM/POTC could be done if they were creative enough!!!

Great Leaping Zot!

0 to 120 MPH in 4 seconds...

They should rename it 'The Up-Chucker'...

My personal choice would be to see Disney spend $25M refurbing 'The Seas'.

Thrill rides are Disney's most popular
attractions....The Mountains, TOT, RnR,etc...

And what Disney considers a "thrill ride" in
some cases would be fairly lame without the
great theme element.

If any Disney park would build a coaster
the likes of "The Beast"or "Millenium Force"
and theme it towards one of their "lands",
a coaster of this magnitude with the great
Disney theme aspect incorporated would be
an incredible, instant success.

Disney does not need to become a strict thrill
park resort, but you can't argue with the postive
impact a super headliner coaster has on a theme
park.

If you were to put only the TOT functional parts up and slap on a queue, it would be pretty lame. It all comes down to the total package. I do think that this one is a bit out of reach for many Disney park goers, but with off the charts design, it could have it's place.

Something like "Stitch's Great Escape" or whatever. Awesome queue / pre show / prep-ride (small ride through before it linked itself into the main coaster so you don't have to switch vehicles) and then this psycho coaster ejection seat of a ride.

To be honest, I would also like to see this sort of $ go twards re-furb of an old ride or area as bstanley mentioned.

As far as themed rides go at Cedar Point, I think this new one is themed very well. If you watch the video of the ride, it's basically a drag race that propels you to 120 mph and at the end of the run you go up 420 ft, coming down and reaching nearly 120 mph again.

Let me amend that statement to say I think it's themed very well no matter if the ride is at Disney, Cedar Point, Six Flags, etc. I mean honestly, how can you theme a ride that is 420 feet tall, goes 120 mph and is over in 16 seconds anymore? I don't think Disney could have done it any better...

As I've said many times. I have no problem with a Disney theme park business plan that "writes off" the extreme thrill set. Attempting to attract it will only cause the growing snowball that Cedar Point faces now. The only reason this coaster is being built is because Millenium Force is no longer extreme enough. Creating a need to "up" the thrill factor on a consistent basis is not the "trap" Disney needs to be in.

Dance with the one that brung ya.

When I want a deep fried gut buster topped with bacon and chili - I go to Billy Bob's Heart Attack Shack. When I want a mushroom and bean sprout pita - I go to Mother Earth's Natural Foods. I really don't need a restaurant that serves both.

I never answered the original question - no it should not be in WDW. Let Cedar Point have it....

I don't consider upping the thrill factor to be
a trap at all, it's how you beat the pants off
of your competitors. Disney is in the middle of
it right now, which is why there is such a buzz
around Mission: Space.

Disney has always been about pushing the envelope
technology wise. ToT, Universe of Energy, 3-D
and 4-D attractions, etc... they have just chosen not to be forerunners in the world of roller coasters. Which is o.k., but some of us that
visit Disney, and are roller coaster buffs, drool
at the thought of what imagineers could do with
a theme, a mega-coaster idea, and a blank check.

I'm as excited about Mission:Space as anyone else.
The "thrill" aspect of it sounds like it will be
a unique theme park experience, I just hope Disney
doesn't lose sight of this.

Disney has always been about pushing the envelope technology wise.
But they have never been about pushing the envelope with physical thrills, and that was not by accident.

A ride like this isnt a "extreme thrill ride" those are the bungee type attractions that parks charge extra for and have little lines due to the extreme nature. A ride like this will develop lines hours in length due to the fact most park visitors are more than physcially capable of riding it. Now some may not ride it like i dont like the Tea Cups type attraction but the ride will have the same physical limitations that a TOT or TT/RNRC will with the same type of height requirement.
Disney has been doing the same type of thing like most parks do by ratching up attractions, that is why you get a TOT/TT/RNRC/MS, because the parks now as does disney that they draw visitors by the hundreds of thousands(which is why dca is cloning TOT)and you can use them as a basis for advertising and merchadise sales.
I would agree with Cricket in that it comes down to the total package and a ride like this or other thrill rides that are out in the public that have been propsosed for attractions like Fire Mountain as a example can be done and done so with the great theming disney is known for, but instead we get jokes like PW.(which is as standard as any carny ride is)

Bob, 120 mph....twice, is extreme by Disney standards, which is what we are discussing.

Just having a line for an attraction does not mean its convincing families to spend a week or more at WDW. If it were, they'd be going to Six Flag's and Cedar Point where these types of coasters are generating huge lines.

Also, for all the long lines at Test Track, Epcot is now down to its lowest attendance since at least 1992 (the number I have only go back to '93). I know you don't consider it a real thrill ride, but for Disney it is, and it is generating huge lines. Yet fewer folks are coming to the park.

Geez, Bob. If I didn't know better I'd say you finally landed a job at Disney's corporate headquarters.

You're right, Disney has been operating more and more like other theme parks, just as they are operating the rest of the company more and more like other companies.

Doesn't seem to be producing the same results that Disney used to, does it?

No TT isnt by any means a thrill ride!!!
Disney's attendance problems have many reasons and while some is due to the lack of any new attractions/lack of foreign visitors/9-11, its also because of the reduced hours and with all of the price increases the lack of perceived value compared to what the park once was.
And Cedar Point will see a increase in attendance like most parks do when they put in a new attraction but that still dosent hide the fact that these parks arent as family friendly/clean as disney. Now a park like Holiday World in IND. had a massive increase in attendance and it wasnt due to a massive coaster but because the park is a very friendly place to visit and in polls out ranks disney in terms of being friendly/clean and doesnt gouge the guests for parking etc. So its perceived to be a great value and this is why attendace at the park has gone up.
