Debate-Bootleg DVDs

I'll admit to buying a few in Vegas. They definatly weren't the same quality as regular DVDs but for $10 they were okay. Would I buy more?? Probably if we had some available around here.

If I like the movie enough I'll buy it on DVD in high quality, if not oh well.

But what if it's a movie that is long out of print on VHS, and very hard to come by even secondhand or to rent, and the studio has not released it on DVD because there is not enough of a market for it, but it's your favorite movie of all time?

Normally I'd agree with you. If you can get a movie through normal means and pay for it, I think you should always do that. But sometimes, certain movies just are not available through legit means and the only ones who seem to recognize that there is a market are the bootleggers.

I would love get my hands of Go-lion bootleg or otherwise.

Guess what I finally getting my favorite cartoon of all time on DVD bootleg.

I know for a fact that WEP that has the rights to Go-Lion may not bring it out DVD because of all the voilence in Go-Lion. WEP is coming out American version sometime near future once they get out deal with Trimark Pictures. So it could be another year before get see any Voltron/ Go-lion at all.

Voltron addicts have beg WEP to bring Voltron and Go-lion out DVD.

I know because I am WEP voltron board.

You can rationalize it any way you want, but here in the United States it is against the law.

If the studios have not released the film ever or have decided not to continue to release it, that's their right.

I'm not rationalizing it, I'm saying I've bought them and would buy them again and oh well.........I also shoot of fireworks on the 4th and thats against the law here too, and I drank before I was 21.......against the law......hummm oh I speed every day, against the law.....................

Uggh I am in such an awful mood today I think I should turn the computer off.....LOL!

My dh downloaded a few off the internet a few years ago. He had a new computer and was showing off for me, lol. The bootlegs were such poor quality we didn't get through either movie. He hasn't done it since, just not worth it. We bought both movies as soon as they were available on dvd and we saw them in the theaters, they got our money alright! :p

The three we bought in Vegas were The Girl Next Door, Day After Tomorrow and Bad Girls.

We will definatly buy Day After Tomorrow when it comes out, it was a good movie. The other two.....nope just not good movies (and I'm not just saying that because you could see three couples get up in the theatre and go for POPCORN!)

As far as I know, a lot of bootleg DVDs of movies that are still in theaters have very poor sound quality and video. Basically, some dude snuck a camcorder into the theater and started to film the movie. Personally, I'd rather buy the legit release a few months later.

Personally, I never buy bootleg anything -- music, movies, games, etc. A lot of people worked hard on these things and deserved to be reinbursed for their time. Plus, if you buy a game from a store and don't download it illegally, I feel like you're giving money to the company to make more cool stuff. After all, we all need $ to survive and run a business.

OK here's the reasons I've gotten them:

1) Movie prices here are $10.25 per person. Add in two popcorns, two candies and two drinks, and you are at the $50 mark.

2) I hate paying $50 and walking out of a movie I don't like.

3) I love movies. LOVE THEM. Sometimes there might be 5 or 6 movies at the theater that I might like to see. If I go see all of them over, say a month, I have spent nearly $300 on movies and snacks.

4) I hate waiting for it to come out on DVD and when it does finally arrive, Hollywood Video usually doesn't have it in stock, even though they guarantee it.

I didn't go seeking out bootleg copies. I know someone who knows someone who knows Kramer :p Anyway, I get charged $5 movie for decent quality DVD's of movies that are in the theater and the majority of them ARE FILMED by the people who are running the PROJECTOR. The days of someone sitting in the theater with a camcorder are over, because many theaters now have night vision goggles which they give to their ushers to check and see if anyone is illegally filming a movie. Unfortunately for them, they fail to check the guy who runs their own equipment.

After I view the movie, if I like it I will buy it when it comes out on DVD because I want the best quality. If I don't like it, then I throw out or give away the DVD - I lost $5 vs. $50. Don't like the fact that I do this? Make your movies worth the $50 and the trip.

You do the math.

RM, PM me and you're welcome to whatever I have.

Seeing as this weekend is the anniversary of 9/11

I'll toss this in:

Interpol, the international police agency, recently testified before Congress that terrorist organizations like al-Qaida use bootleg CDs and DVDs to fund terror.

Then there's another reason for the movie industry to make going to the movies more affordable.

Believe me, I much prefer to see it on the big screen.

Bootleg CD's and DVD's have been around for a long time. And you can't tell me that all you people who are whining about them, never copied an album onto a blank cassette tape, if you are of age to know what those are.

Don't insinuate I am a huge part of funding terrorism on a debate thread without backing it up with facts.

BETCHA DIDN'T KNOW THIS

Ever heard of Lagardere SCA? No? Well maybe because it's a French company. OK .. have you ever heard of Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.? Probably not, but Hachette Filipacchi publishes some magazines you may have heard of. Those magazines would be Elle, Car & Driver, Women's Day and others. Now it's getting familiar, isn't it? OK, so we have Car & Driver which is published by Hachette Filipacchi which is owned by Lagardere SCA which is a French Corporation.

So .. are we finished here? No, not quite. It seems that a man who has been the news quite a bit of late owns around two percent of Lagardere SCA. About $90 million dollars worth. His name? Saddam Hussein.

This company is the world's largest magazine publisher. Here's a list of some of the magazines they own. Bet you've bought one of them.

Did I say that you were funding terrorism.
No I dont think I said that.

I just wanted to add that to the thread. I have seen it reported on television news programs several times

House Report:House Report

And no I havent bought any of those magazines, ever.
I havent even looked at one of those

Mercedes-Benz's cost too much. Add in tax, license and shipping charges and it's just outrageous. Much cheaper to steal it.

2) I hate paying $50 and walking out of a movie I don't like.

Well, no one made you buy the refreshments, but many theatres are known to refund your money of you didn't like the movie

3) I love movies. LOVE THEM. Sometimes there might be 5 or 6 movies at the theater that I might like to see. If I go see all of them over, say a month, I have spent nearly $300 on movies and snacks.

Boo hoo. I like cars, but I don't steal them because I can't afford them

I hate waiting for cars that I order with all the options on it. So if I find one that someone owns that has everything I want and is in the color I want, I'm justified in stealing it?

Are the same same people that complain about the loss of jobs, the economy and what not the same ones that can easily justify stealing music and DVD's from the internet and depriving folks of the income they worked hard for?

I guess you don't speed..........

I guess you never had a drink before you were 21.........

and on and on.............there are BIG differences in buying a $5 movie and stealing a bazillion dollar car.

How does the movie studio get the money for the rights to the work they own? If you wrote a book that the publisher no longer printered, would you want people making copies of that book to pass out to their friends? The fact that the studio, for whatever reason, has chosen not to release the movie doesn't make it right, IMHO.

Funny you should say that, since I work for a publisher.

When a book goes OP , the rights revert back to the author. If the author does not want to sell the book themself, they don't have to. The book can still be sold secondhand legally.

As a writer, if I felt there was a market for my OP book, I'd self publish. If I didn't feel there was a market, and a handful of people loved my work and wanted it that badly, then I wouldn't care if they took it. Obviously, they want to read it bad enough but there are not enough of them to warrant a profit.

Not to the people that worked to make it.

If I speed I'm not depriving anyone of the fruits of their labor. If I drank before I was 21 I was actually helping those the make the alcholol (because I didn't steal it).

Give me examples of when it's okay to deprive someone of income and I'll debate those examples.

Not sure I understand your point. Secondhand is far different from bootleg. The publisher obviously has no problem with second hand book sales. The better example would be if I bought the authors book, when to Kinkos and made copies of it, had it bound, then decided to sell them at a cheaper price. How would your publishing company feel about that?

Or, take Disney for example. If I happen to own one of the movies they no longer produce on VHS or DVD, do you think Disney would have a problem with me making copies of that and selling it? I don't have the rights to do that. You, as the author have the right to do what you want with your work. I as the consumer of your work, do not have the right to make copies of it and resell it. Or use it without legally obtaining the right to.
