Debate-Bootleg DVDs

The only two I have are Song and Toby Tyler- If they would be able to purchase legally (and cheaply in the case of Toby- the 1984 VHS release sells for over 30) I would buy them in the first hour of release-

Song of the South, maybe. But man, I would love a Disney released version of it packed full of special features and 'The making of' featurettes. That would be sweet.

I would not buy or borrow a bootleg of a recent "blockbuster" that was either in theaters, or soon to be released on DVD. I don't see why anyone would need to do that, if they could just go to the movies, or knew the DVD would be out in a matter of weeks or so.

I buy bootleg DVDs after I see the movie in the theatre. When the movie is released, months later, I buy the official DVD as well.

Not only would I borrow it, I buy them when I can.

RM wanna borrow some of mine?

Yeah jips that would be great!

I'm already going to hell for any other number of transgressions so one more is unlikely to make a difference LOL!!

I borrowed Hero too BTW.....

I WOULD buy them, but I don't have access to them, so I have to WAIT for them to come out on DVD like all the good people in the world....

I do refuse to go to the theater though, they are WAY too expensive for me!

No, but only because we have an older DVD player (it's like 3 years old now)that will *only* play DVDs made by the DVD people. It will NOT play any home-burned stuff. We didn't know this until DH bought a card to download like 10 songs from some website and we burned them onto a CD. We attempted to play the CD in t he DVD player, but it wouldn't play, although the CDs play FINE in either one of our cars. *shrugs*

It is not horrible at all you didn't buy it you didn't create it you are just watching it I wouldn't feel guilty at all.

Would you borrow a stolen car from someone? Would you borrow a stolen CD from someone? The bootlegger has essentialy stolen the work of the movie studio. The fact that you aren't the one the stole it doesn't justify your actions, IMHO

Dmadman here in Canada we have no issues with this stuff LOL we can even download music and MP3's here legally LOL it is great to be Canadian. Ya somone created it and somone copied it if trhey didn't want this to happen then they should really try to prevent it at the theatre level it is generally the projector guys that mae the bootlegs of the movie anyhow. Watch the movie and enjoy it beats paying 13 bucks to go to the theatre.

The place where I got TLU on a bootleg DVD is a huge comic book/ collectibles store. I'm surprised that they sell as many as they do, but they have them right out on the shelves. However, they ONLY carry bootlegs of older animated/fantasy movies that are not available anywhere on VHS or DVD.

I have seen people at flea markets selling movies that are out in theaters now. That, IMO, is wrong.

How does the movie studio get the money for the rights to the work they own? If you wrote a book that the publisher no longer printered, would you want people making copies of that book to pass out to their friends? The fact that the studio, for whatever reason, has chosen not to release the movie doesn't make it right, IMHO.

So, if someone leave the keys in their car it okay to steal it?

Yea, I guess it's great to be Canadian unless your the artist whose work is getting stolen.

Hey when they come to the table with a better argument against it maybe the courts will reverse the ruling untill then it is all good and not illegal to do it here.

I understand that Candians think everything should belong to everyone. But, put yourself in the artist shoes. Would you want your work being used by someone and not being compensated for it?

You also didn't answer the question of whether you would borrow a stolen car from someone. I guess if the Canadian govt said it's okay to steal a car that someone left the keys in and its okay for you to borrow it, there's not much I can say. :smooth:

Honestly if you are dumb enough to leave your keys in your car it deserves to be stolen and here your insurance company says to bad so sad they will not cover it. You can also be charged for it. As for the music thing as an artist I would put it on my website for downloading as I have found more people that download it and like it will buy the cd.

Does the same theory work for movies? Has either theory been proven? I agree the music industy and the film industry need to think about how to get ahead of this train. But, unless or until the copyright laws change (at least in this country) it's theft.

As for the keys in the car, well, I no talking about what your insurance company would do, I'm talking about is a crime or not. Is it a crime to take someone else's car even though they left the keys in it? Following that logic, I guess it's okay for me to help myself to your house if you left the door unlocked, right? Just because you can bootleg a movie doesn't make it legal to do so.

That is where it is different between the US and Canada it is legal as defined by the courts here and not so in the US.

:o I admit it, I bought a copy of SotS in England and had a friend convert it to American VHS. But it's not illegal if I actually purchased the English version, right?

One of my managers owns illegal Japanese DVDs for the Star Wars Trilogy. That hasn't made him any less excited about the set coming out, which he will of course buy. (And by no less excited, let's just say he has three different outfits planned for the night of the midnight release party. I hope he doesn't scare our customers.) But he has the Trilogy on VHS, Beta and Laserdisk as well, so he's just scary anyway.
