Dealing With A Cast

My 5 year old daughter fell yesterday and has a slight fracture in her wrist. We're meeting with an orthopedic surgeon on Thursday to see if she needs a cast or not. I'm really hoping not, because we leave for Disney on June 14. Has anyone ever dealt with a cast on rides? How did you keep it dry in the pool? Thanks!!

As far as keeping it dry- you can find waterproof sleeves in most medical supply stores that go over the cast. While every child and every injury is different, my son had a slight fracture in his wrist - one not easily seen on the X-ray but diagnosed by the level of pain he was experiencing. He was placed in a cast for 1 week and then a full wrist brace/soft cast for another 2 weeks. Not all fractures require a long term cast - so hopefully your daughter will only have to be in one for a short time... if at all! Good luck & have a great trip!

Thank you! I was thinking that it might not be on for more than a couple of weeks, but wasn't sure. I guess I'll find out on Thursday.

Ask for a waterproof cast. Depending on the fracture it may be an option. It may cost a bit more but so worth it! You can swim, bathe etc with it on and the water just pours out.

For a 5 year old, with a fracture that a doctor thinks may not need a cast, there is practically no chance that she'll still be in a cast almost a month from now. Odd things happen every now and then, but it's really not worth worrying about yet. But yes, do get the waterproof cast. Your insurance probably won't pay for the extra cost, but it's worth it.
