OK, this is very sad and I don't want to be morbid. However, there is a dead deer in our yard. She was clearly lactating. You always hear about people saving the babies. If she is clearly lactating - would the baby already be born? If not, How long could the baby survive after the mom passes? I feel bad and feel helpless wondering about her baby. I think it happened at 12:30 last night - I heard a thud.

Thanks.:sad1:

Oh so sad! Could you contact your local Wildlife Rehabilitators or Rescue? They can help. We have deer here also and have had to call for similar situations, but I'm in LI.

Please keep me posted!

By this time of year the baby has been born most likely. Have you contacted your Fish and Game department? They will usually come and remove the body for you. If you think there is a fawn nearby, they might know of an animal rescue organization that would look for the fawn.

Deer raised in captivity are found in petting zoos. They also raise deer for food - venison is popular on some restaurant menus. I know there is a deer farm near me. If you know of one of those, the owners might be willing to search for a fawn and see if one of their nursing mothers would adopt it.

How sad! I would call a wildlife group near you to help. That poor little bambi...I hope it'll be ok. Keep us updated.

Have you seen the baby?

DH is calling DEC to take care of the body.

we are keeping a watch out for any fawns and I have a number for a wildlife rehabilitater should we see one. ETA: I will let you know if we do!!!

We have woods, which are pretty dense in areas, but we are constantly watching. The road is in back - on the other side of the woods. The mom made it all the way to the edge of the woods and the lawn. Fawns could be hiding anywhere back there. I am afraid to flush them out and have them run - especially toward the road. We are also pretty sure our resident turkey is nesting back there! Don't want to go flushing her out of her safe spot either!

thank you all!:goodvibes

If you have any idea of where the fawns are, they might come out for food. I am not sure what fawns eat (other than my day lilies) but I'm sure you could google.

Aww that is so sad, I hope if there is a fawn out there he/she comes within sight so someone can help it

I read that the fawns stay put and wait for the mother, so my neighbors and I searched the woods and the areas by the road. No luck, but we will continue to watch for anything. The mom has been picked up, thankfully. It was hard to see that every time you were near the window.
