DDs glasses $375...sound right?

I would not pay that much for my daughter's glasses...Costco and Walmart have some very nice ones for reasonable prices- she doesnt need expensive designer ones in my opinion

We just got my DD two new pairs of glasses because Hour eyes was having a B1G1 Free sale....

It was $320 for both pairs

We got an extended warranty on one of the pairs (was only $30 but she's real hard on the frames being a barn girl and all) and splurged for anti-glare on those too. (makes a big difference in photos)

The frames were real nice. One pair was a $120 Candie's frame and the other was a studier wire frame (rimless on lower edge) that was $90 frame.

I'm so trying to talk her into contacts.... The way she is with lenses i'd make out

If your DD is 18yo or under, she would still qualify for the kid's pricing at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club for glasses. That is a HUGE savings. The last pair of glasses that I got for my daughter there were about $180.00 for the exam, frame, poly-carb lenses(about 30% thinner than plastic) & anti-glare.

Also, you do not need to be a member of Sam's Club to use the services of the optical department or the pharmacy.

We paid $97. (no eye exam though but that was a $15 copay elsewhere) with eye insurance at Lenscrafters for our 7 year old.

I don't want to pay much at this age because she'll probably lose or break them soon anyway.

I think that $375 for a pair of glasses for a kid is outrageous. You really should look into getting them at a warehouse club if one is in your area.

I got my most recent pair of glasses at Costco, where they have a very good selection of frames. I got Ralph Lauren frames for $99.00, bifocal polycarb lenses for $59.99 and anti-reflective coating for $29.99 for a total of $188.98.

Plus, if your lenses get scratched, cracked or broken, Costco will replace them for FREE.

I can't believe that the OP was charged $90 for anti-reflective coating; she really got ripped-off!

I refuse to buy my dd any more glasses at Wal-mart due to the simple fact that their frames are junk and the only warranty is 30 days.....

(of course the two pairs we went through at Walmart were just beyond their 30 days when they broke.)

Walmart also has no extended warranty program for the frames either.

For kids/teens, that's a big deal-breaker in my book.

I always use www.39dollarglasses.com . I've gotten reaaly nice glasses there & they're lightweight & I have a very strong Rx. I usually go to Walmart for an eye exam & get the written Rx there for the glasses & contacts-I order from 1-800-CONTACTS. Definately a good price for an extra pair of glasses.:)

Even with a frame allowance from my insurance and full coverage for the lenses and the thing that makes them change into sunglasses automatically, I still pay $200+ each time I buy a pair of glasses. My frames are never entirely covered by insurance (unless I want to look like Drew Carey) and I pay full price for the no-line bi-focals.

Glasses are expensive. :( I've been fortunate to be able to reuse my frames a few times and just get new lenses to save a few $$.

Thanks everyone...as for the designer frames, they are not a fancy frame, but do have hinged temples, which I thought was worth it. While DDD is almost 17, her glasses can wind up in some of the strangest places, and she is very petite, finding a frame that fits her face and is not too juvenile is not always easy. Our insurance pays $110 toward eye care so OOP for us is 265, of course, I will not have anything to put toward her contacts. She is almost 17, and we did try walmart and target and lenscrafters...all 3 did not get her perscription right, we have been going 'round and 'round for months. I finally decided to just go back to the eye doctor where we could verify HE did the exam, so if the glasses are not right, they have to make them right, Other places we would have to re-pay for exam, or at least that is what we have run into,I give them the script from our Dr., they make the glasses, andthey are wrong and then they say they are right based on the script....:confused3
I am going to call Sam's club, to price out a set there...I knew you could get perscriptions filled there w/out being a member, but not glasses. Thanks for the tip.

Whoa!! I have just entered into the eyeglass world with DD6. First pair with insurance cost nada. Very cute pair of wire rimmed glasses.

She broke those so we went to Visionworks and got 2 pair plus exam for $138. I was thinking "gosh that's alot of money!!" I guess not!

I know www.twopair.com has glasses for $69.95 and that includes exam. I would have gone there but it takes a few days to get your glasses. You can even make an appt. online.

I actually just ordered DD's glasses yesterday at the Walmart Vision Center. Fortuntely she picked inexpensive frames..... total cost of everything is
$117. Guess I lucked out!...................P

Good luck! My boyfriend got his there... After FOUR trips to try to get them correct he made them give him his money back. Those glasses were JUNKE. They were ground wrong, the lenes were as thick as coke bottles (and he's not that blind) and they STUNK! (I mean they really did smell and NOTHING would get rid of that horrid, sickening smell!)

We use America's Best for DS' glasses. (With our own optometrist providing the scrip and checking out the grind afterward.) Two prs. for about $220 including full-coverage breakage and loss insurance. These are nice pewter-framed lightweights with flexible hinges, scratchcoat and photosensitive lenses.

A kid at school wanted to distract him during a playground game, so he snatched his glasses and put them on the ground some distance away, on the theory that DS would have to stop playing and go get them. What the kid didn't know was that he had put them directly in the path of a game of dodgeball -- they were totally annihilated by several running children before DS could get to them. All we had to do was bring in the remains, and DS got a full replacement pr. at no charge -- you should have seen the relief on that kid's mother's face!

My glasses usually run me about $200, sometimes more. I have single vision, not terribly strong of a prescription, I do usually get anti glare because it helps when I wear them driving. Because of the style of frames I prefer, I do mostly have to get thin lenses. I think the ones I'm wearing now cost me a little over $200 and I didn't even have to buy the thinnest available lenses.

To add to this, I get them at a Wal-Mart vision center, and as an employee get between 10% and 20% discount.

I oreder my Ds glasses today for $209.99. Featherweight Ultra lenses, transition, & anti-glare. I never pay more than $300. for glasses for any of my kids.

Hi guys,

I'm an Optician here in California and that is actually an average price. Especially for frames. $120 for a frame is a lower priced frame. They can actually get a lot more expensive, depending on the designer. We charge:

Single vision lenses $69
"Feather weights" (Polycarbonate) $40
Anti Reflective coating (prices vary) For the best coating (Crizal Alize--definitely!) $99

Also, we don't charge tax and almost always give a 20% discount on top of these prices (not that I'm trying to sell you a pair :-)

Hope this makes you feel better, that yes, unfortunately, that is the right price. There are many everyday that will spend $600+ Can you imagine:confused3

Hope this info helps

I work for an eye doctor, and be glad she didn't need High index lenses. The glasses I am wearing retail for 675, since I am blind as a bat, glad I only pay cost!

Pricing out my last pair of glasses, the total was around $800. We have insurance, and I still had to fork over almost $200. So if you are not covered by a vision plan, you are probably right in the ballpark with that figure.

For $10 you can get a 1 year warranty from walmart. I only buy my kids glasses from there for that reason. I had my daughters replaced 3 times last year. It wasn't the frame quality.. it was her first pair and she was very rough on them.

I have always paid less than $150 for their glasses.

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Im with you on that, I worked for an eye dr. for 6 yrs, and wouldnt shop at walmart for glasses, Ive looked at their frame selection and its JUNK, no one needs to spend a ton on frames, but there is better quality frames out there with a year warranty at a good price.

EDIT.... i went back and read ... YES she does need the anti glare coating.

THat price sounds about right.

OP depending on the child's prescription I might would skip the anti relflective coating esp if this is just a back up pair too contacts.

Both DH and I got our last three pairs of glasses at Costco. We both have designer frames ( Hilfiger and FCUK) and both pairs were under 200.00 with the lenses.

Well, it looks like we did not get the best price, but not the worst either. Yes, the anti glare is needed, to be honest, that is the part that ranges...from $50 to $120 depending on who I called...I think the single vision lenses at $98 is high so I called and they knocked $20 off..but that is about it. So total OOP for me after $110 insurance is $253, and if they are wrong, will be corrected at no fee to me or additional exam. Thanks for all the responses. I don't think I would order glasses for DD on line, I get her contacts that way, but there is too much involved with glasses for right fit, see how they fit first etc. Maybe if she wsa looking for a spare pair for kicks..but that is not a luxury in the budget right now. I skimp on a lot of things, but not the kids eyesight...just hadn't needed to update her glasses for the last 3 years, she was dong ok with them, but now, no getting around it, needed new everything. I guess since it has been 3 years, the total isn't too bad, if she can get another 3 years out of them!
