And, she's going to lose.

Her school is offering a Cyber-Crimes presentation next Tuesday evening. There are actually 2 presentations, one for the middle-school & high school students, one for the parents.

The 2 presenters are in law enforcement, specific to crimes which can happen over the internet.

The adult presentation sounds very interesting and includes how to access/view/archive internet activity, chat room conversations and many other tips on what to look for and what to do, to prevent cyber crimes from entering the homes.

The student topics to be presented are how to be safe, what to avoid, red flags, etc.

While we do monitor DD's e-mails, and her internet history, my comment to DD was: If you do not attend this presentation, you will not be allowed to use the internet in our house. PERIOD.

She just isn't happy with me right now. OH WELL, that's why I'm her parent, not her best friend.

Stick to your guns!

It's so much fun to be the parent of a teenaged girl, isn't it? :teeth:

Great idea, mom. I don't think most teens are aware of the dangers they face on the internet. Maybe a little awareness will make them think twice.

How about making the evening fun? Let her invite a friend or two and take them out for pizza or ice cream before or after the presentation.

I think everyone here will stand 100% with you behind your decision. You can be the friend once they move out on their own!

I would deffinately stick with that decision. My 13 yo DD is on probation because of the internet. To make a long story short she sent a couple of e-mails to some kids at school who were bothering her (she tried the go tell the teacher thing many times and just got told she was being a tattle tale. :furious: ) Since I have taught her not to hit anyone no matter what (except in self defense of course) she wrote these kids an e-mail telling them if they didn't leave her alone she would beat them up or whatever. Their parents turned the e-mails into the police and she was arrested for terristic threatening. So kids really need to be very careful what they do. DD did the e-mail thing at another girls house when she spent the night over there. (otherwise she never would have sent one in the first place because we watch what she does at home.) You can't watch them 24/7 though.

There is NO WAY my DD would invite a friend. She will never, never in a million years admit to any of her friends that I am making her go to this. It just isn't cool.

In addition - for this presentation, they are strongly encouraging the parents to attend too, so if you need to send your child without a parent/guardian, you need to get special permission from your child's building principal or vice principals.

As the older cousin of a future potential Amber Alert victim (met a 20-yr-old on the internet when she was 12. When he called the house, my aunt said, "You do know she's 12?" He replied, "Oh. I thought she was 13." She then called the state police.) I applaud you for your stringent efforts. We're just waiting for the call to come saying my cousin has run off with somebody. Myspace is a toxic, toxic place, so be very wary of that, too...

It was worth a shot. Maybe a trip to the mall for a hat and sunglasses before the seminar would work better. :teeth:

Denae - I got it! Or should I say I finally got it. I was a little slow picking this one up

It's been a long week...
