DD 11 has always gotten recurring athlete's foot, especially when it's warm outside and she sweats. I have been using the typical Lotrimin stuff on her toes, and now it is turning this crazy, angry looking red in between her toes. She says it hurts a lot.

I guess the Lotrimin is irritating her toes, so I will stop that. Anyone else's DD have this? I was thinking to use Neosporin to heal it up?

I will take her to the doctor tomorrow. Just wanted any advice.

Thanks!

I second a doctor visit. And fungi are tenacious. Clean, thoroughly dry and reapply the anti fungus cream 4x per day. They also sell medicated powder which may help her. And then even when it seems to be getting better, keep up with keeping the feet clean and dry and the cream.

Try the powder instead. No sock at night in bed. Clean socks everyday. If possible change socks so they are not staying sweaty.

Any shoes she has worn barefoot need to be powdered also.

I know this sounds crazy but if it's really bothering her have her soak her feet in some apple cider vinegar. Hubby swears it feels great and stops the itching/burning.

Tea tree oil - it's a natural antifungal. Good thing about tea tree oil is that it cures athlete's foot that is caused by a fungus and those caused by yeast.

I second the apple cider vinegar. I had atletes foot for 2 years and could not get rid of it. I used Tenactin, Lamisil and some prescription that the doctor gave me and nothing worked. I used apple cidar vinegar and it was gone in 1 week.

Make sure that she is alternating shoes every day. That will give them a chance to dry out.

It really sounds like she needs to see a podiatrist --- NOT a GP or primary doc.

If you don't want to go to the doc, try this: Clean her feet with apple cider vinegar or even white vinegar. Rup Vicks VapoRub on her feet. Another home remedy is Tea Tree Oil (get it at any vitamin store) --- just clean her feet well w/the vinegard and then rub the tea tree oil all over her feet.

You have received some excellent advice but I thought I would share this. DH has suffered with athlete's foot. Once however, things got worse and nothing helped. He finally went to a podiatrist who diagnosed a different problem which typically behaves like athlete's foot. So for those who recommend seeing the old Doc, I second that. It could be another problem altogether!

My Dad uses clorox. He puts a cup of it in a bucket with some warm water and soaks his feet. You might want to do this outside so the clorox doesn't damage anything.

Takes a couple soakings to work. He also washes his white socks in clorox when he has a flare up.

She might want to wear socks that wicks away moisture.

They say if you soak your feet in tea it will reduce the amount of sweating they do.

Definitely get her to the doctor. The fungus can spread to her toe nails and that is much harder to get rid of. Trust me, we learned the hard way with my daughter. Finally took her to the dermatologist after her pediatrician kept telling us that she just had sweaty feet that caused her feet to peel. She had to get an oral Rx to finally get rid of both the athlete's foot and nail fungus. Good luck!

Gold Bond Foot Powder really stops the itching and burning and keeps the feet dry. But I like the apple cider vinegar idea-- going to try that on DD this summer! Thanks!

There is a prescription anti-perspirant called HyperMax (i think) that works well for me. It is just regular anti-perspirant, but it is more concentrated. It is applied at night for 10 days. It absolutely stops sweating for 2-4 weeks. i use it before every Disney trip to ensure that I get no blisters on my feet from wet friction.

I second the recommendation to soak the feet in cool water with a capful of bleach. It really helps sooth and cleanse the wound.

Pat dry, then apply Neosporin AF (Anti-Fungal) - it's much better than the other over-the-counter products and it helps heal the wound.

You should wash all her socks with bleach and hot water, throw away slippers and don't replace them until the athlete's foot is completely gone. Use Lysol or rubbing alcohol on the insides of any shoes or sneakers you want to salvage, but if it's in the budget, hold off and buy new ones, tossing the infected shoes.

Using my first post on a foot question. Lol
I have an 18 yo son who being in multiple sports/ athletics throughout highschool. Came home no less than once a month with some form of athletes foot or jock itch. Having tried every single Otc remedy and finding nothing that could offer relief I resorted to figuring out how to treat him on my own. We found great success in washing daily with tea tree oil mixed in with his bodyvwash, along with 3x daily treatment using beaudreaux Butt paste. The stuff used for diaper rash. It has amazing drying and healing powers.

I had a case of AF that wouldn't go away for years. I finally ended up with a pill RX from the dr that worked really quickly and permanently.

It was a really strong medication though and I had to have a blood test to check my liver before being able to take it. It did no damage to my liver but I also only needed to take it for 3mths.

I use tea tree oil foot spray, every single day when it's warm. I haven't had trouble in years.

Also, soaking in Epsom salts and tea tree oil helps the fungus infection and feels good too.

Get her to the doctor - if your PCP doesn't clear it up quickly, get her to a podiatrist.

I also recommend the more expensive "sweat wicking" socks. They are worth it for people with athletes foot issues.

And get her some new shoes. That can also be part of the issue.
