DDP Rookie Question

Our friends are staying 7 days at WDW onsite. They are staying at one resort for 5 nights with the dining plan and 2 at another resort without the dining plan. If they save dining credits at the first of their trip can they use them at the end of their week or are they void after they check out of the reservation that is with the dining plan?

What I have heard done is using the credits up (before midnight) on checkout day, getting the meals/snacks boxed, and throwing them in the fridge (assuming your friends will have a fridge at hotel #2) to heat and eat another time.
