My DD has a "milk protein intolerance," which is basically the equivalent of an allergy. She gets cramps, diarrhea, and dark circles under her eyes if she has milk. She has the same reaction to corn, although she can handle trace amounts of both, and she has a horrible reaction to blue food coloring as well - it makes her just ... well, witchy and uncontrollable.

We're VERY used to navigating through this overall, and I'm not too worried. But this is the first time we've ever been on the DDP, which we are, and I had a few questions.

#1: Is there anywhere in the World that we can get almond milk, or should I bring it? We're flying from Canada to Fort Myers - I can buy it in Fort Myers and bring it when we drive, that's not a problem (I wouldn't try to bring it on the airplane, goodness knows it might be perceived as a terrorist move). Soy milk is not an option (also gives her cramps).

#2: When the only dessert on the kids' menu contains milk (like Yak & Yeti - they only have ice cream sundaes) - will they allow my daughter to choose an adult dessert?

#3: Is it even a possibility to call back and buy the adult option for her on the Dining Plan? It would give her more options, although she might not eat enough to make it technically worthwhile, it might be a better choice overall.

I know how good Disney is at accommodating allergies, I really do. I just wonder how much more complicated it becomes with the Dining Plan. I know to call ahead, I have the phone numbers, it's listed in my ADRs, and I trust, overall, that things will work out. But if it's better all-around to just buy her the adult version, if that's allowed, then maybe that's what we should do.

I am reading the FAQ's on thread 3 as well, by the way. Sorry, I didn't find it at first - was looking for "allergies" and "food allergies" and didn't see it under "dietary."

There are for sale off site almond, rice, and hazelnut alternatives to milk. I love almond the best. They do have some desserts like tofutti and rice dreams as well as some restaurants will make sorbets for example. If she cannot have kid stuff the they will let her have adult foods or will make her special kid style foods. Look into a possible intolerance of soy if she is having stomach aches from soy milk. Soy milk is pure soy in liquid form so that will cause the fastest and most obvious reaction. For me french fries and salad dressings are worst for soy reactions. Witchy is an interesting term but reactions can include hyperness and mood changes.

Have fun on your trip and feel free to ask questions now. Better to be at ease now than to find out you were wrong later.

As far as I know, Disney has soy milk available, but not almond, rice or other altenatives, except for the rice ice cream as mentioned by the previous poster. If you are driving to WDW from Ft. Myers, I'd simply stop at a Publix grocery store near WDW. They carry a nice selection of milk substitutes.

Ok, I'll do that, get the milk outside the park. Sorbet and rice cream will be ok (the trace milk in rice cream doesn't affect her much).

I think she's intolerant to soy, yes, but we only see reactions if she eats full-blown soy products like the milk, or soy cream, or tofu.

Do you have almond milk in "juice box" format in the U.S. (at the Publix stores, say)? We can get it here that way, which rocks, but I don't think I can bring it down from Canada.

Really, we're very fortunate. It's all intolerance, not allergy, so the reactions aren't extreme, but it's not fun, either.

I really don't know if the juice box size is available of not. Most grocery stores carry the substitutes in a one quart size box. Larger organic/specialty stores like Whole Foods may carry the juice box type.

Only if you want her to also have an adult ticket. This would be the only way for her to get the adult dining plan as it is a packaged deal.

I've never seen almond milk in a juice-box size, but I have seen rice milk in juice-box format at both Whole Foods and larger regular grocery stores.

You can find their products there. I found 26 stores within 10 miles of orlando that carry Rice Dream original and 15 within 10 miles of WDW. Rice, allmond, and hazelnut milks can be bought in a store near you and brought with you on your trip as they are stable on the shelf without refrigeration. The new oat dream has soy in it.

I have soy intolerance and the problem is that you can build up toxins in the body from the intolerance. Right now my knee is in lots of pain because of eating soo much cheese. It is best to avoid with in reason soy like salad dressings. A smidge in candy might not hurt but do try to keep it out of her life.

Good to know, thanks. It's always Almond milk we use - she used to drink Rice Dream until one day we ran out and I bought Almond intead. She never looked back - and having tasted both, I can see why!

We have a few days in Fort Myers before we head up to Orlando, so I'll stop at a Publix there and get some for her. Juice-box size is great, but if we can't, it's no big deal. We'll make it work with Rubbermaid juice boxes and a cooler bag.

I appreciate the link.
