DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
I'm taking the family to New Mexico to surprise my mom for her 80th birthday, and can't wait. This was initially going to be just me and my family, as well as my brothers and their families, and mom's youngest brother, but it's grown to a whole lot more and simply can't wait. Mom has no idea what's going to hit her.

Sounds great! Safe travels, and have a great time!

How's everyone (those who do it) enjoying the time change???

Barely. I had to get up at 5 a.m. the morning of the time change to catch my flight.

As for Genie, it grants the most "wishes" to the folks on site. By the time the windows open up for the off-site rabble, the choices can be limited and in some cases, nonexistent (particularly at HS)

I hadn't heard that before. I wonder how much of an advantage it is. From what I heard, everyone was seeing return times well into the evening.

Good that you got to do that.
Too bad about Mother Nature deciding to be so fickle though.
We were driving through Jax on Friday and dealt first hand with the deluge.
Nasty stuff...

Yeah, I haven't seen that much rain in a long time. I'm sure it was fun to drive through!

Agreed, but I ain't so sure that it's going to get a whole lot better any time soon.
They don't care about catering to the Dis-Vets as much anymore as there seems to be a glut of newbies that are plenty willing to pay the current rates for the current returns.
Until they encounters that ceiling, it won't be getting much better.

I have to think that there is a good number of visitors who are put off enough by the prices, long waits, and inconveniences of trip planning that they won't want to come back. Not sure it will be enough to matter, though.

Well, DW has been sick for a couple days with a bad cold... guess who's feeling just a little bit of a scratchy throat this morning? :sad2:

Still hoping to avoid it, but know it's pretty inevitable. Luckily, it's just in time for my days off so...yay

Your timing is impeccable! Hope you feel better.

Let me clarify that a bit.
It's an access thing and relates mostly to the "Fancy Rides".
Let's say just for argument's sake that you'd consider paying the added charge for RotR to cut that insane wait down just a mite. The folks on site can (and will) start buying those spots up starting at 7am. If you ain't on site you'll be locked out until after the park in question actually opens better than an hour and half latter. Needless to say, by then you'll be looking at times approaching park close or it will already be sold out (which was our experience).

HS is particularly bad due to the overly high attendance that RotR causes, which then also causes runs on all the other attractions. RotR was gone before the 8:30 open and averaged three hour stand by times. Several of the other rides sold out quickly as well and most of the ones on site were also sporting 90min to 2hour waits all day. We tried to wait things out and catch a few like TT, SDD and even Rise around closing, but then a record rain storm showed up. You may have heard about that one as it made the national news. So much water showed up so fast that it overwhelmed the storm drains at HH, Epcot and along parts of I-Drive. Everything shut down and the hike out of the park was through calf high standing water (panuchos don't due much good in conditions like that).

This sounds suspiciously like first world problems... :rolleyes2

So far still feel okay. That throat scratchy went away... so fingers crossed.

Ohhhh... okay, got it now.

Morning dads.

Looks like I'll be signing paperwork for my apartment today. Excited, but also a bit scared...German law regarding canceling a lease is not friendly to the renter. Not figuring I'll need to, but still a bit of concern.

Also looks like I may be buying a new car today. The used car prices are insane and when I can get a new Camry for 2k more than a 2018 ford focus(albeit a hybrid), fiscally, it makes sense...just didn't want another car payment.

Morning folks. Happy Friday (most likely Part 1 of 2... )

If you renege on the lease, they send you to the Russian front.

I hear that!
I was looking at car prices the other day. I can buy a new 2022 Honda Civic for $27-35K (depending on model) at 0.99% financing. Or I can buy a 2019 Civic for... $27K... at 3.9%!

Morning, Fellas! Just wanted to make a quick pit stop before heading out. Would love to have responded to more posts, but just don't have the time. I came home last night and hit the ground running with packing, and now it's just a quick stop.

I've been known to work once in a wile.

Ummm, how exactly does Rebecca become Jaquellen?

She kept calling me Paul, and still does, and I randomly came up with that name.

BTW happy belated birthday Paul.

Thanks. 😆

Sounds like a really cool surprise ya got planned.
Good on ya.

Can't wait to spring that one on her.

Have a good trip!

Thanks

ummm... okay?

Oh, now it makes perfect sense.

Glad you got that.

Meh. You live in the USA. I'm pretty sure that no matter what you forget, you can buy it where you're going.

But I'm going to New Mexico, think I'll be able to get American stuff there?

Okay, that would suck. Been there too.

That mad dash is never fun.

Morning All.

Safe travels to all those travelling today.

Congrats on the apartment and the car Doc.

Oh and

The only Hump Day meme that matters : r/twincitiesgeeks

Hello Everyone,

When I logged in, I realized it has been over 2 weeks since I last popped by. It took me a while to get caught up on all the goings on around here but it appears I missed a riveting conversation about the current value of Disney.

To put my 2 cents in, going to Disney doesn't make financial sense at all but we are doing it anyway, although with some changes. For several personal reasons, we go the first week of April every year and are going again this year. For the first time ever, we are staying off site and renting a car as it is cheaper then staying at a value. We are even taking a day or two to explore the other side of Florida (maybe the Gulf Coast or swamp boat somewhere). We are adjusting our expectations and will try to go with the flow, going on rides when we can and enjoy the atmosphere the rest of the time. Genie sucks and I refuse to pay for Genie+ or Lightning Lanes. Luckily for me, even The Kid won't wait more than 30 minutes for a ride (maybe 45 for Big Thunder). We decided that we only have so much time with The Kid before her parents become old fuddy-duddies and she doesn't want to be with us so we will go to our happy place with her while we can.

On the home front, I am currently in the market for a cheap used car for The Kid. As of 2 weeks ago, she has been licensed by the State of Oregon to propel 3500 pounds of steel down the road at high speeds. Now she thinks she needs to use that license to its fullest. Any car within her price range is a clunker and nicer cars cost more than mine did 2 years ago.

Now, I get to look forward to a colonoscopy sometime in April. If I only knew all the joys of adulthood while I was growing up... I thought being an adult meant I got to go to bed when I wanted and eat ice cream for dinner.

I think we should stay on permanent standard time. Checking the sunrise times, if we have DST during the winter, the sun won't rise until about 9 AM whereas it rises at 8 now. However, if we had standard time in the summer, the sun would set at 8 pm instead of 9. That seems reasonable to me.

The purpose for its original adoption has long since ceased to exist.
If we just follow the natural progression of the sun, it gradually rises and sets earlier or later and our bodies adjust naturally and gradually. The way we'd done for thousands of years.

Everyone loves the fall back because they get an extra hour, but the spring forward cause productivity issues for several days.

From a technical standpoint with computers, having no 2:01 - 2:59 or having two of that range has caused countless problems over the years. It is a prime target for hackers because the traces of their activity can simply disappear.

Several states do not do daylight savings and wow, they do just fine!!!

Same problem I had over here. Used cars were almost as expensive as new. It sucks. Having to buy another new car just because for 2K more I have a warranty and no miles....yet

It's not the colonoscopy....it's the prep that sucks.

I told all my kids enjoy being a kid while you can...adulting sucks.

Morning folks. Happy Friday... again.
Fair to middling chance that tomorrow will be Friday part 3... 50/50 I'd say.
But I'm going to New Mexico, think I'll be able to get American stuff there?
No. But it's all the newest and latest Mexican stuff so almost as good.
FYI: the bill to make daylight savings permanent has passed the senate and now it’s up to the house to pass it…
Yeah I don't get that one. Abolish the stupid jumping back and forth, but why not permanently keep it on standard time?

Yeah... for our own reasons (I mean the collective we, not the royal we) we go again despite the rising costs.
We might not go as often... but we go.

Hmmm... which begs the question.
If given a choice... would you rather earn $5000 once a year or $3000 three times a year???
For the first time ever, we are staying off site and renting a car as it is cheaper then staying at a value.
Isn't that horrible? The whole point of the Values was to make staying on site obtainable for everyone. Now it's only obtainable for the rich. The mods are for the filthy rich and the deluxes are for the disgustingly rich.
I'm only guessing... but I'm pretty sure when Walt put up the CR and Poly... those were supposed to be for average families. (Yes I know he was already gone when they went up.)

Congrats to your DD... condolences to you.

Precisely my thoughts on it as well.
Good with dropping the switch, but folks are picking the wrong standard.
And around here for for some reason their right rabid about that extra "hour"-ish of sun light when it's 110 degrees and 97% humidity, so I'm in a a rather miniscule (and somewhat confused) minority.

Go figure...

It's not the colonoscopy....it's the prep that sucks.
And that's the truth...
pbbbbffffttt!

jaqsdad explained it better. It sounds to me what you are saying is we need to have a permanent set time year around and this bill is doing that.
