DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Can you expand on that?

Was the GOAT responsible for all those SB wins or was it Coach bellicheat who sucked when Brady wasn't his QB?

Could Jordan, Shaq, Kobe win championships without Phil Jackson?

Pro coaches get way too much credit. Coaching makes a difference, more so at lower levels, but it is still about players & talent.

Morning, Gents, from a snow covered Cape Cod, with more snow on the way. Apparently we're due to get more snow today, not much from what I understand, but more nonetheless. While I'm happy that I finally got a job with the company I've been wanting to work for for years, even if it is just as a temp, it seems that Murphy just isn't done throwing curve balls my way. Discovered last night that we have some problems here in the house. I went down to the basement for something and discovered water all on top of the washing machine and dryer. I thought, "Hmmm, well that's odd and certainly not supposed to happen." So naturally I looked up and saw, what looks to me, the seams on the underside of the subfloor were wet. Now, not sure if that's the way they always look (I don't make it a habit to look up at the subflooring), so either the water is somehow leaking in a pip inside the wall and then running down the inside of the wall, or a pipe in the basement is just leaking. Either way this isn't good. Well, when I went to tell the wife she informed me that while giving our DD a bath the water in the tub was yellow. That's definitely not supposed to happen. I instantly thought of the hot water heater. When they go the water is usually brown in color (colour for you British folks) and not yellow...unless this is the beginning of it. Either way I called a plumber friend of ours to come take a look at it. Hopefully it isn't too bad. At most expecting to have to replace the water heater, it's been in the house for over 20 years and may be coming to it's end. We shall see. Well, onwards and upwards. Right?

Hope you get some good news. Major repairs suck.

Yikes. Doesn't sound good. Is the tub above the washer/dryer?
Mark already said it, but... 20 years on a hot water tank is a loooong time.
But you'd make someone south of the border real happy! :teeth:
Could be. :)
On a side note, I think my favorite episodes of Mythbusters were the ones where they shut off all the pressure release valves on the hot water heaters. Man, that was just spectacular.

I decided to work from home today, not because of the cold but just to avoid people for a day.
Staying home to avoid people.... sounds like a pretty good idea.
Nope, not going to try that.
Was pretty good, actually.
Well the weather report just keeps getting worst for the week. Colder and colder -5 high on Friday -24 low . I am starting to feel like Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation looking out the window dreaming of the pool and the Aulani in 11 months haha

I tried this a few weeks ago, I love maple syrup and found this had a nice maple flavour. It makes a nice mixer for Rum.
Yeah, it wasn't bad at all.

Okay, with you now. And I agree. Without talent, all things being equal, I don't care how good your coach is.

Well my boiler took a dump this evening. Spent 5 hours exhausting my knowledge trying to get it going. Only supposed to be -12 tonight better to happen tonight then on Friday when it will be -25. I am truly blessed to have fantastic neighbors and friends who rallied together and brought me 12 space heaters to get me through the night.

Phew! Good thing your neighbours were able to help out. Ya gotta have heat!

Morning, Gents. Snowed again yesterday, didn't even get an inch, suits me just fine. My plumbing friend stopped by yesterday after work. Unfortunately the water wasn't becoming discolored for him, so going off of not having discolored water he thinks the water heater is fine. As for the water on top of the washing machine and dryer, he thinks there's a blockage in the pipe leading to the septic tank. Since his company doesn't deal with stuff like that, he gave me a number to someone who does, so I'll call them today. So as of right now, everything is fine...even with the possible blockage. Otherwise works going well, so that's all I've got. Have a good day, gents.

Yikes. Yeah, it's definitely time to have a plumber take a look. I'd say after 20 years the hot water heater is probably due to be replaced. But if there's water dripping from above you probably also have a leak somewhere (your hot water heater is in the basement, right?). So it might be two different problems. Hopefully the plumber will figure it out quickly.

Yeah 20 years is a long time, but since we couldn't replicate the problem, he thinks the water heater is still good. So I have to go on that until the thing craps out. When it does decide to go, I hope it's not in the middle of winter. Knowing how long we've had it I'd like to replace it, but the Mrs. won't want to until she has to....so we're gonna keep it for now.

On a side note, I think my favorite episodes of Mythbusters were the ones where they shut off all the pressure release valves on the hot water heaters. Man, that was just spectacular.

That is a good episode.

Morning all from a cold Douglas, NB. Polar vortex seems to be making it's way so cold for the rest of the week. I decided to work from home today, not because of the cold but just to avoid people for a day. So just me and the cat hanging out for the day.

Keep warm, my friend.

Yellow water is never good. Hope that you don't have a bad leak.

No it's not. Unfortunately we couldn't replicate it, so maybe just an odd occurrence.

Well the weather report just keeps getting worst for the week. Colder and colder -5 high on Friday -24 low . I am starting to feel like Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation looking out the window dreaming of the pool and the Aulani in 11 months haha

Man that's cold. Do you have to drip your faucets or do you just have really good insulation around the pipes?

Happy Tuesaturday from a cool Westfield NB. We got about 5 inches of snow yesterday and school was canceled, so I got to hang out with DD. She helped for a while with the bathroom addition. last week I got the walls studded up, electrical and plumbing rough ins done and wall board hung and taped. This week I want to finish the crack filling, prime and paint, then put down a ceramic tile floor.

Making quite the progress on the bathroom. Almost makes me want to take on a project like that. Almost.

Hope your plumber can get this fixed for you soon.

So far good news. The water heater seems to be ok, and we might have a blockage in the pipe leading to the septic tank, so I'll call someone to take care of that.

Yikes. Doesn't sound good. Is the tub above the washer/dryer?
Mark already said it, but... 20 years on a hot water tank is a loooong time.

Yeah it is, both tubs are above the washer/dryer. We've never had a problem before, so we think it might be a blockage in the pipe leading to the septic tank.

Could be. :)

Wow that sucks, man. Sorry to hear. Glad you had some good neighbors who helped out with some space heaters.

Morning from a sunny buy cool (3F) Westfield NB. Taking the day off from the bathroom project to go check on a brother who lives alone. Have a great day dads.

Hopefully you can have the boiler fixed before the colder weather hits. Great bunch of friends and family you have.

Good luck in getting the blockage cleared out.

Oh, man. That sucks. Perfect time of year for that to happen. I'm glad your neighbors were willing to help out.

You went to Taco Bell again, didn't you?

Thanks. Must have been the Taco Bell I had.

Ah, yes. That's the stuff.

Every winter I think of this. I'm thinking to myself, "Man, my water heater must be t'd off right now, when's it gonna go?" We have forced hot water for heat, so my hot water heater gets a work out in winter.

You went to Taco Bell again, didn't you?

Twice.

Honey, could you hand me that snake and stop peeing in the water tank, you are making the water yellow.

Good luck. Hope it turns out to be fairly minor.
I wonder... you said your DD had a bath first I think. And then you had the yellow water. Maybe the water got stirred up, or low in the tank?
I'm no plumber. I have no idea.
Taking the day off from the bathroom project to go check on a brother who lives alone.
nice of you. :thumbsup2

We have liftoff...

That's brutal. Last time the transformer blew in the neighborhood with the ice storm, we stayed at MiL's for four days. :scared1: When power goes out now, that's not even considered as an option.

Well, maybe some good news. Digging up a sewer line block in frozen ground doesn't sound fun or cheap either.

As we built our house 20 years ago, most everything (except the roof) is 20 years old. Not a good plan.

A little something I found after our earlier tea discussion

That's why I've felt the need to say "engage".

My son is a master plumber and I can tell you feom conversations with him and experience...REPLACE IT!!! When they go, the damage costs (flooding or otherwise) will more than outweigh the cost.

Morning all from a lightly snow dusted London.
Coming into some crunch times on projects, so everyone wants a piece of Danny.
Pick up the Jeep later, and currently in a row with Fiat about who's paying for it.
Hope everyone is warm, dry and full of bacon. Looking at the posts above that seems like a challenge right now. All the best to those sorting life stuff out.

Okay, with you now. And I agree. Without talent, all things being equal, I don't care how good your coach is.

To an extent. A big part of coaching at that level is man management, and coming up with a system that suits their marquee players strengths and other players can support, or identify others who can take them to that next level, and to bring out the best in them. You are right that its talent, but talent means jack all if you don't apply it correctly.
You and Norm are right, Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Messi can all win games on their own, but I could give you a list of maybe 100 teams in history that on paper should have won championships but didn't. So is it the job of the coach to get them ready for the huge games? Ancelotti in Leicester on paper, had a significantly weaker team than probably 5 sides in the Premier League, and those other teams were filled with the calibre of player you are talking about, and yet he won it. Coaches can bring a spirit or a gee up a team, that has been seen countless times in relegation battles in the Premier League. I would say the opposite in the UK, that the team are praised to the rafters if they do well, once they get on a bad run of games it's the coach that gets the bullet.

Never seen Star trek, so I guess I'm in the orange. Does he drink Earl Grey in it?

This. Not only do you have to deal with collateral damage, you also have no time to shop around. If something as central as your boiler or heater goes, you will pay through the nose once it's gone to get it fixed right away, rather than scheduling in with a cheaper, better guy. Just my tuppence.

Have great big beautiful today, y'all
