DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

Evening All,

Been a long night and day, had a small taste of what you dealt with last week Rob. Huge wind and rain storm knocked out our power last night around 11:30 and stayed out until about 2:30 this afternoon. House got a bit chilly but we were lucky we only had to deal with it for less than a day. Second time this week that happened but the other day was a work day so it was easier to deal with.

Hope you all had a great weekend.

I wish you luck. Let me know if they have those little tasting stations set up.

They did have the little stations but they weren't for things you would want to taste. Unless you are one of those crazy kids who is in to Tide Pods.

Morning, gents.
One and a half hours to go on the shift. Quiet night. Don't mind that one bit.

"Donner"'s name is Dunder or Donder in the poems. My kids find it really funny when I correct them, as I can't not bite, so they say it deliberately. And Blitzens name is actually Blixem. He's only known as Donner because Johnny Marks sang it wrong in the song.
Whoa... what a rabbit hole you sent me on. I was pretty confused to learn of Donder and Blixem.
Spent a while checking out various web sites.

Here's a snippet from the original first publication in the Troy Sentinel of 1823
542491

The poem has been attributed by Clement Clarke Moore, but some have claimed that Henry Livingston Jr was the rightful author.

You may note the spelling of "Dunder", and not "Donder".

The spelling remains the same in the New Brunswick Almanac (Joseph Griggs) of 1825 (snippet below)
542492

The United States National Almanac (David McClure) also of 1825 however changes the spelling of Blixem to Blixen
(No original copy found, however)

The Poughkeepise Journal of 1828 returns the spelling to Blixem. (Snippet below)
542493

Watson's Annals of Philadelphia from 1830 actually omitted the lines completely, bringing the poem down to just 24 lines.
And the Historic Tales of Olden Times (1833) reprinted the poem from Watson's Annals of Philadelphia with the omitted lines.

The New York Book of Poetry (1837 and 1840) changes both Dunder and Blixem to Donder and Blixen. (snippet attached)
542494

Bryant's Selections from the American Poets (1840) keeps the spellings Donder and Blixen
as does the New-York Mirror (1841) and The Rover (1843)
(No original copies found, however)

Of interest is that Moore publishes his (supposedly) poem in 1844 in Poems.
There he keeps the name Donder, but changes Blixen (or Blixem) to Blitzen.

Further to Dunder and Blixem/Donder and Blitzen/Donner and Blitzen

Dunder and Blixem is apparently old Dutch for thunder and lightning. Modern Dutch would be Donder and Bliksem. German spelling now would be Donner and Blitz. (although there is some evidence that Blitzen was also used for lightning. Modern German has Blitzen translating to "Flash".)

Wow, did not expect to send you on a massive fact search on that one. Sorry buddy. I knew about the Old Dutch/German Crossover. Its one of my favourite questions to ask the kids at this time of year - Name all of Santas reindeer, and the Curly Haired Ninja always says Donner and Blitzen with an evil smile on her face. And she also starts with Rudolph. Which is fair enough.

But quality work there.

Oh, it doesn't end there.
In L. Frank Baum's "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" (1902) they're called:

Flossie and Glossie, Racer and Pacer, Fearless and Peerless, Ready and Steady, Feckless and Speckless.

Morning, Gents! Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. It poured rain here on Cape Cod, and off Cape as well, on Saturday, so couldn't do anything outdoors, but luckily there was a Star Wars marathon on TV, so I popped some popcorn and plopped myself down in my chair and didn't move unless I had to. Christmas tree got set up yesterday. Outside that? Not much to report. I'm not in full job hunting mode, so pray something good comes of that. Well, gents, have a good day.

TTFN

Morning all. Despite multiple rejections, I'm still job seeking. I guess it's kinda like dating - ask enough and hopefully someone is dumb enough or drunk enough to say yes. :lmao:

:lmao:

I have an interview in Indiana on Tuesday for a therapist job with an LLC. In our phone interview yesterday, she said they were growing too fast to keep up with demand, an unintended consequence of the COVID lockdowns. I don't know how the out of state licensure laws work, so something for me to review today. It may be a reciprocating thing, transcripts, and/or test. But, I'm guessing they know, otherwise, why waste the interview time. Best thing is that since it is across the river, it can't be denied by the retirement board.

Good to hear that there's at least one job the board can't say no to. Hopefully something good will come of it.

Sorry to hear it and prayers for you. Back to our bulletproof post, I was always told hard work gets you ahead in life. Painfully, I learned that wasn't true, at least in my industry. Hard work gets you more work. It's about relationships and luck.

Thanks. I thought I had a good relationship with these guys, but I guess my boss didn't like having his mistake thrown back in his face. Besides, both my DW and DMiL said that he knew he no longer had control over me. Oh don't get me wrong, I made a mistake and admitted it, and would have done what I was told going forward, like a good little employee, but he basically knew that I had lost respect for him and there was nothing he could do after that. That's how he lost control over me. I would have continued to work my butt off for him, but he made up stuff to get me fired, and that was evident in how he reacted when I questioned him....so I'm done. I'll pour my energies into finding another job.

That's just not a manager thing, that's a company thing. With profits being as high as they've been, and with such a low tax rate these past few years, nothing shows loyalty better than giving employees a raise or a bonus. I'm not smart enough to understand it, but I guess a revolving door or hiring people is more cost effective than rewarding people who stay.

This doesn't make sense to me. One would think it'd be cheaper to pay out a bonus or some raises to keep from having to train new people.

Discretionary spending is lower now with only my retirement check. So, I managed only a bottle of Maker's Mark to get me thru the week. I still have enough cigars, but I can only smoke them outside, and it is way too cold for me.

We've cut down extra spending as well. I'm going to look into unemployment, which I should have something left from the law firm I was let go from recently, because I never collected, so until I find something extra spending is out. This means that Christmas is going to be pretty lean this year.

Afternoon from a rainy Westfield. Dd and I just got back from her swimming lessons and lunch. We are now going to make a Zebra cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting for DW birthday tomorrow.
Have a great weekend.

That sounds good.

Sounds like the storm that blew through New England. I was worried we'd lose power, but thankfully we didn't.

Never understood the whole eating Tide Pods.

Morning All, welcome to Monday!

Wind and rain was followed by an inch or two of snow overnight. Still fairly mild but everything is white for now.

Man it was a quiet night for you. ;)

Aside from Reindeer-gate, COVID strikes again in our house. One of the boy's classmates had it, so that means his whole class is in self isolation. We aren't but he is for 2 weeks.
The whole infant school shut down on Friday evening as they have run out of teachers. That's chucked a spoke in a fair few plans.

Good morning!

The Mandalorian is an awesome show. That's all I got for you.
I've just got through the first season.
He could cheer up a bit. Crack a funny once in a while. Maybe the "pull my finger" gag.

Happy Sunday. Read an article today from NPR that 85% of Californians are on stay at home orders thru Christmas. Good thing the science cleared the NFL players to travel. :rolleyes1

Oh, there is no cutting back here. We are in full on spend mode, always have been. DW and I perpetually overspent, just on different things. We haven't figured in out in 20 years, so we aren't likely to now. It's sad that I have to find extra income to support extra spending.

Good luck Norm, good to hear the retirement board can't veto this job.

Thanks. How did the zebra cake turn out? Feel free to send me the leftovers.

And what are you sneaking away from?

I'll take "What are more things I didn't know for $100". Thanks for that clarification. Not sure what happened to West Ham this weekend. They looked like Man City in the first half and West Brom in the 2nd half. Still, it was good to see some fans back in the stands, although, not sure how the rule of "no excessive singing" was enforced.

The Mandalorian is an awesome show. That's all I got for you.

I keep forgetting to watch Season 2. I need to get on that.
