DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Morning, folks.

Was up with insomnia Saturday night and couldn't get to sleep much before 1:30am this morning.
But at least SWMBO has trained the dogs to beg from the table or whenever she eats, so their barking woke me at 6:30. Plenty of sleep.
accurate
Well, the weekend is over and that means back to work....or for me, the continuation of work from last week. Had a total of just under 17 hours overtime last week and am scheduled for 10 hour days Monday - Wednesday of this week, though I'm hoping that because we got so much done yesterday it won't happen, but I know I'm dreamin'.
Careful of burnout.
I want to make sure it's the Randall from here and not some random Randall, :lmao: :rotfl2:,random Randall, that just sounds so funny.
I move CBO be officially recognized as Random Randall!
We can't tell you. He's the stealth like Ninja master of the tribe.
Was that OK @Cinderella's Fella ? I kept your anonymity pretty well there, I think?

Oh.
Way to let the cat out of the bag. Spill the beans.
Loose lips sink ships, you know!
(They don't. But Exocet missiles do.)

Ugh. Monday morning and I'm already exhausted.

Been trying to paint our family room, kitchen and front hallway since SWMBO decided the house needed freshening up after spending months staring at the walls for COVID, and that this all needed to happen before Thanksgiving. So I have two rooms done and have taped/prepped the hallway. Also smoked a brisket and two pork shoulders while spending all day Sunday on the phone with fellow Session members of my church as we found out we had a couple of COVID infections and needed to shut down services for the time being. I'm not sure I actually sat down for more than an hour this weekend.

Morning, boys.
Bit of a rough day yesterday, and now it's Friday the 13th. But... it's a day off, so how bad could it be?
(Mike... Jason... Freddie... don't answer. Please.)
A co-worker in a different department suddenly passed away from a heart attack the night before, so I spent all afternoon and all my lunch break calling everyone in the department to offer condolences and to check in on them. Bit draining sharing emotional times with 10 people, one at a time. Then having to follow up with another one on a different matter, and then coming back from my break and dealing with another person on another matter. phew.
And in the middle of that, dealing with someone giving me conflicting guidelines was not appreciated.
Have one more phone call to make in a couple minutes and then I'm gonna crawl under a rock somewhere for the rest of the day.

Just read this. Sorry to hear that...I'm sure that was a long day.

I'm not sure it was a saying, but I have the utmost respect for submariners, because if they get attacked, they may never come back up and that to me is a scary scary thought. To be honest, if alone and getting hit in the middle of the ocean and almost no hope of survival if the ship goes down, that is a scary thought as well. At least with aircraft, if you survive the crash(i.e. bail out), at least you have the ability to survive until help comes.

I don't know how submariners do it. Spending months at a time in an enclosed space...no thanks!

I do not enjoy tiny icy flakes blowing sideways with a fierce wind. It can be like tiny BB guns shooting you in the face.
Unfortunately in these parts we get more of the latter.

If 2020 was a snowstorm, this would be it.

Morning all. Not much new in newly retired world. Saw that a couple of our local health care facilities posted medical social work positions this weekend. I applied for them and will see who wants to offer me the most money.

The "Florida project" discussion returned. DW and youngest dd want to stay here to finish work/ school. Oldest dd wants to go work for Disney. I was thinking about a move near the ocean, but I can dust off that WDW boat Captain dream. As March 2021 will be the 1 year time frame for the pandemic, maybe the COVID fear will be pronounced over, and WDW will resume capacity.

When I first read this, I thought it said, "Having a nice weekend away from the wife. Either I need to wake up a bit more this morning before jumping online, or I need to let the caffeine filter though the system first. Either way, I had to do a double take. :lmao: Sounds like a good weekend. Did you and the wife enjoy the weekend? Hope she enjoyed getting away.

How did Rodney Dangerfield do that joke? Take my wife.... please. :lmao:

Try to enjoy the OT money.

Who's identity?

(there is a list of names on Page 1 of the thread for those who have chosen to share)

That would require a great deal of effort - click to page 1, scroll down to find the post, and read a list of names. No one has time for that.

Ugh. Monday morning and I'm already exhausted.

I'm not sure I actually sat down for more than an hour this weekend.

Time to go to work to get some rest. Outside of tennis, I've chosen to hibernate.

My FIL was a Engineer on Nuclear subs. You would imagine he can sleep through anything and in any place, seeing as he used to kip on top of the some of the world's deadliest weapons, but nope, sleeps like a skittish puppy. Any noise and he's up and about.

But of course it does.

Lots! Do you freeze it? Or does the family lay waste to it as soon as it's ready?
Just read this. Sorry to hear that...I'm sure that was a long day.
Thanks. Yes it was.

What's long and hard and full of sea.... um... nevermind.

Engineer... maybe because any strange noise on a sub would be a very bad thing?

I bet he has some great stories to tell.
Weirdly, the only people he will tell them to are me and the boy. Lady K says when they asked him when he was younger it was "all in the past". He's got some amazing photos at the North Pole though with the sub in the background.

We had a very relaxing weekend, nice couple days away.

We were on a cruise a few years back and the guy in the cabin next to us was a submarine captain. We were talking on our balconies as we were leaving Old San Juan and I asked him how he was finding the cruise. He said normally he would be underwater by that point, we had just left the harbour.

Cool!!

Slightly different view.

Morning, Gents! Monday is in the history books along with Day 1 of inventory. We started counting on Sunday, but that was a volunteer day, not mandatory, so yesterday was the official 1st day. I was surprised at how far we got yesterday. I believe we're farther along than we were last year. If I remember correctly, it took a day and a half to count the stockroom last year, this year we were done by the end of day 1...so I think we're ahead. There's still more to count, but that's in what we call WIP, Work in Progress, and that hopefully won't take too longs, so I think we'll be done counting by the end of today, and tomorrow, Wednesday, will be the day to reconcile the numbers...maybe even start that later today. So all is moving along nicely. That's all I've got. Have a good day, gents!

TTFN

This is though, how nicknames start.

I know, and I do have to be careful. I'm hoping to score a day or two off later this week. Can't remember how the schedule was worded for Thursday and Friday, but I read it as those days are left up to the managers. Since I've been working 8 days straight, going on 9 with today, I'm hoping to score a day or two off.

Pretty ambitious. Hope you get it done in time.

Depends on the size of the boat, and then they are limited to the amount of supplies they can carry. I know missile boats stay out 90 + days as there needs to be a constant presence/movement of missiles around the world incase of attack/retaliation. Fast-attack subs stay out like 60 days, if that, and that's again due to the size of the boat and and the amount of supplies they can carry. Interesting fact: They don't have enough room for all those supplies, so they put them everywhere. A friend at work, who served on Subs, told me that in engineering they'll have a level of cans on the deck covered with plywood, so everyone is literally walking on cans of food.

Hope you get a nibble off of it.

That would be cool. The last time I was down in the World, I met a retired dentist who was a captain of a boat and he loved it. He said that he and his wife went down during the winters, they're from Minnesota, and work then go back during the summers. I think he said his wife worked retail in the World of Disney. He said that Disney was real good about keeping retirees on the same schedule.

How did Rodney Dangerfield do that joke? Take my wife.... please. :lmao:

Oh I will, or rather my wife will. Actually, it'll go towards bills.

Just easier to ask.

That's interesting. You would think he'd be able to sleep through anything.

He's got some amazing photos at the North Pole though with the sub in the background.

That's pretty cool. Not many people can say that.

We had a very relaxing weekend, nice couple days away.

That's good, you need that once in a while.

We were on a cruise a few years back and the guy in the cabin next to us was a submarine captain. We were talking on our balconies as we were leaving Old San Juan and I asked him how he was finding the cruise. He said normally he would be underwater by that point, we had just left the harbour.

That's funny. I asked a friend at work, who was a nuke tech in a sub, about being out to sea during a hurricane. He said, if it bothered them, they'd just dive deeper. I just shook my head in amazement.

Learned something new today, and that's cool to know about Disney. I would take most any job at WDW, but the boat captain has always been the top of the list.

Morning All,

back at the office, it's just where I left it. Busy couple of weeks coming up with meeting, AGM and awards - all virtual this year. Hope it goes well.

Don't you hate when that happens?

From what he said they were good to retirees.

'Morning all...
We had some cases of the 'Rona make their way onto the office this week, so out of caution it was decided to send everyone to work from home for a couple weeks. Sorry to hear it for those that are dealing with that mess, but I'll not be complaining about the chance to work from the house for a spell.

Don't got much else to say right now (which will keep me from ticking off any of y'all for the moment, at least). That being the case, how 'bout some more pictures (and stuff like this this is y'all's fault for not stopping me).

Some images from a recent-ish road trip down to New Orleans; these are from a stroll around Jackson Square...

We had one case in our building.
It's a might bit disconcerting to see people in hazmat suits cleaning while you're at work.
Some images from a recent-ish road trip down to New Orleans;
Thanks for that! NOLA has been on my bucket list for a long time. Who knows if/when I'll ever get there.

Lots! Do you freeze it? Or does the family lay waste to it as soon as it's ready?

We generally give it away to friends. I had hoped to have some people over to hang out on the deck and eat, but the weather didn't cooperate. So we did a "drive-through" BBQ service.

What's long and hard and full of sea.... um... nevermind.

:scared:

Sounds a lot like my grandfather. He served in WWII, went behind enemy lines during D-Day. Never really talked about it. He did mention that he still had shrapnel in his hand.

Nice photos! I suspect you're a bigger NO fan than I am. The pictures make it look awfully inviting, though.

Afternoon! Lots going on but not a whole lot good or worth getting into details. DS lands home this Thursday for a long stay as he will finish this semester out at home which his school always planned - go home for Thanksgiving and stay there. He doesn't go back until mid-January except for a 1 day Leed certification test that has to be done in person :confused3 Sorry to hear about you guys dealing with some COVID effects. Darcy - glad you had a nice getaway with the better half. Stay safe
