Careful of burnout.Well, the weekend is over and that means back to work....or for me, the continuation of work from last week. Had a total of just under 17 hours overtime last week and am scheduled for 10 hour days Monday - Wednesday of this week, though I'm hoping that because we got so much done yesterday it won't happen, but I know I'm dreamin'.
I want to make sure it's the Randall from here and not some random Randall,![]()
,random Randall, that just sounds so funny.
Way to let the cat out of the bag. Spill the beans. We can't tell you. He's the stealth like Ninja master of the tribe.
Was that OK @Cinderella's Fella ? I kept your anonymity pretty well there, I think?
Oh.
Morning, boys.
Bit of a rough day yesterday, and now it's Friday the 13th. But... it's a day off, so how bad could it be?
(Mike... Jason... Freddie... don't answer. Please.)
A co-worker in a different department suddenly passed away from a heart attack the night before, so I spent all afternoon and all my lunch break calling everyone in the department to offer condolences and to check in on them. Bit draining sharing emotional times with 10 people, one at a time. Then having to follow up with another one on a different matter, and then coming back from my break and dealing with another person on another matter. phew.
And in the middle of that, dealing with someone giving me conflicting guidelines was not appreciated.
Have one more phone call to make in a couple minutes and then I'm gonna crawl under a rock somewhere for the rest of the day.
I'm not sure it was a saying, but I have the utmost respect for submariners, because if they get attacked, they may never come back up and that to me is a scary scary thought. To be honest, if alone and getting hit in the middle of the ocean and almost no hope of survival if the ship goes down, that is a scary thought as well. At least with aircraft, if you survive the crash(i.e. bail out), at least you have the ability to survive until help comes.
I do not enjoy tiny icy flakes blowing sideways with a fierce wind. It can be like tiny BB guns shooting you in the face.
Unfortunately in these parts we get more of the latter.
When I first read this, I thought it said, "Having a nice weekend away from the wife. Either I need to wake up a bit more this morning before jumping online, or I need to let the caffeine filter though the system first. Either way, I had to do a double take.Sounds like a good weekend. Did you and the wife enjoy the weekend? Hope she enjoyed getting away.
Who's identity?
(there is a list of names on Page 1 of the thread for those who have chosen to share)
Ugh. Monday morning and I'm already exhausted.
I'm not sure I actually sat down for more than an hour this weekend.
My FIL was a Engineer on Nuclear subs. You would imagine he can sleep through anything and in any place, seeing as he used to kip on top of the some of the world's deadliest weapons, but nope, sleeps like a skittish puppy. Any noise and he's up and about.I don't know how submariners do it. Spending months at a time in an enclosed space...no thanks!

But of course it does.Been trying to paint our family room, kitchen and front hallway since SWMBO decided the house needed freshening up after spending months staring at the walls for COVID, and that this all needed to happen before Thanksgiving.
Lots! Do you freeze it? Or does the family lay waste to it as soon as it's ready? Also smoked a brisket and two pork shoulders
Thanks. Yes it was.Just read this. Sorry to hear that...I'm sure that was a long day.
What's long and hard and full of sea.... um... nevermind.I don't know how submariners do it. Spending months at a time in an enclosed space...no thanks!

Weirdly, the only people he will tell them to are me and the boy. Lady K says when they asked him when he was younger it was "all in the past". He's got some amazing photos at the North Pole though with the sub in the background.I bet he has some great stories to tell.

Slightly different view.We were on a cruise a few years back and the guy in the cabin next to us was a submarine captain. We were talking on our balconies as we were leaving Old San Juan and I asked him how he was finding the cruise. He said normally he would be underwater by that point, we had just left the harbour.

Morning, folks.
Was up with insomnia Saturday night and couldn't get to sleep much before 1:30am this morning.
But at least SWMBO has trained the dogs to beg from the table or whenever she eats, so their barking woke me at 6:30. Plenty of sleep.
Careful of burnout.
I move CBO be officially recognized as Random Randall!

Loose lips sink ships, you know!
(They don't. But Exocet missiles do.)

Been trying to paint our family room, kitchen and front hallway since SWMBO decided the house needed freshening up after spending months staring at the walls for COVID, and that this all needed to happen before Thanksgiving. So I have two rooms done and have taped/prepped the hallway. Also smoked a brisket and two pork shoulders while spending all day Sunday on the phone with fellow Session members of my church as we found out we had a couple of COVID infections and needed to shut down services for the time being. I'm not sure I actually sat down for more than an hour this weekend.

Morning all. Not much new in newly retired world. Saw that a couple of our local health care facilities posted medical social work positions this weekend. I applied for them and will see who wants to offer me the most money.
The "Florida project" discussion returned. DW and youngest dd want to stay here to finish work/ school. Oldest dd wants to go work for Disney. I was thinking about a move near the ocean, but I can dust off that WDW boat Captain dream. As March 2021 will be the 1 year time frame for the pandemic, maybe the COVID fear will be pronounced over, and WDW will resume capacity.
How did Rodney Dangerfield do that joke? Take my wife.... please.![]()
Try to enjoy the OT money.
That would require a great deal of effort - click to page 1, scroll down to find the post, and read a list of names. No one has time for that.
Time to go to work to get some rest. Outside of tennis, I've chosen to hibernate.

We had a very relaxing weekend, nice couple days away.

That would be cool. The last time I was down in the World, I met a retired dentist who was a captain of a boat and he loved it. He said that he and his wife went down during the winters, they're from Minnesota, and work then go back during the summers. I think he said his wife worked retail in the World of Disney. He said that Disney was real good about keeping retirees on the same schedule.
Morning All,
back at the office, it's just where I left it. Busy couple of weeks coming up with meeting, AGM and awards - all virtual this year. Hope it goes well.
Learned something new today, and that's cool to know about Disney. I would take most any job at WDW, but the boat captain has always been the top of the list.
We had one case in our building. We had some cases of the 'Rona make their way onto the office this week, so out of caution it was decided to send everyone to work from home for a couple weeks. Sorry to hear it for those that are dealing with that mess, but I'll not be complaining about the chance to work from the house for a spell.
Thanks for that! NOLA has been on my bucket list for a long time. Who knows if/when I'll ever get there.Some images from a recent-ish road trip down to New Orleans;

Depends on the size of the boat, and then they are limited to the amount of supplies they can carry. I know missile boats stay out 90 + days as there needs to be a constant presence/movement of missiles around the world incase of attack/retaliation. Fast-attack subs stay out like 60 days, if that, and that's again due to the size of the boat and and the amount of supplies they can carry. Interesting fact: They don't have enough room for all those supplies, so they put them everywhere. A friend at work, who served on Subs, told me that in engineering they'll have a level of cans on the deck covered with plywood, so everyone is literally walking on cans of food.
