I almost joined the Navy out of college. I wanted a shore assignment though. I need to see trees and grass. When the recruiter said "I can almost guarantee a shore based assignment" that was when I went off to graduate school in Knoxville instead. I could have been retired by now though.

That's funny because I almost joined the Army. I wanted to join, but my ASVAB score wasn't good enough to get in. The Army recruiter told me, "If you were black, I could get you in no problem." Told my mom who then called my congressman. The recruiter told me that he had to take at that point. I said, "No thanks, I'd be a marked man as a trouble maker if I went in. So I waited, took the ASVAB again, got a better score and joined the Navy instead."

According to here https://www.thebalancecareers.com/minimum-required-asvab-scores-and-education-level-3332646 , the rankings have changed a bit from what I recall when I went in, but:

40 - Coast Guard
36 - Air Force
35 - Navy
32 - Marines
31 - Army

I don't recall where the CG fell back when I enlisted, but the order then was
AF, Marines, Navy, Army. I was shocked for Marines being 2nd because, kinda like the army, many are just foot soldiers. To the best of my knowledge, the Army has always been the fallback plan when other branches said no.

I have a problem with being cross trained in two different jobs. While it makes me valuable to be crossed trained, the problem with it is that I can't ever really get anything done in one place. As I mentioned, Bill, the guy who runs the stockroom, is out the next three days, which leaves me in charge here. Fine, I can do the job, not all of it as there are things I've not been trained to do, but I can do 80-90% of the job. The problem is that the Steve, the other guy in the warehouse, called out sick today and may be out the the rest of the week. My supervisor came up to me this morning to tell me this, and told me that I may have to help out in the warehouse. "But what about the work here?" I asked "There's work here to be done, like all this receiving on these two carts?" "This can hold off because we have to get the receiving done." he said. Then he proceeds to try and tell me that the receiving on the carts can wait because we need to get the shop orders picked. Wile I understand that shop orders need to be picked, we also need to put the receiving away. If I don't put the receiving away people are going to start picking at it and taking things before I can receive it into the stockroom....which will eventually cause problems there. I know, breath.

I wish I could remember what the problem was. I admit to being bad at taking tests, but I know I had a passing grade, and I did much better on the test the next time I took it, but to tell me that he couldn't let me in was odd. And you're right, it doesn't take much to point a rifle at the enemy and pull the trigger.

Happy cannabis day. To settle your military branch argument, my dad wins. He joined the Navy to get out of being drafted in the army for the Korean war. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and taught tennis to the officers and their families.

I think it is more its potential to spread. I read a report that Corona is something like 8 times more contagious, if someone with SARS stood in a room, they would infect 5 people. With COVID, its 26. the exponential threat is driving the lockdowns, to take the pain now rather than collapse the healthcare system. I honestly don't think governments would be effectively shutting down the economy without good reason mate.

It's a good thing it's not more lethal then. Our area hospitals are furloughing doctors and nurses or letting them take vacation days since there isn't enough patients with all elective procedures cancelled.

Welcome back and nice job on the firepit. DS and I had a fire tonight minus the firepit, tequila, wine, cigar and beers and discussed his plans for after the non-graduation graduation. Still planning on getting visiting the Air Force recruiter after he gets word from the principal he has met graduation requirements. 32 days to go he says. Hope all is going well with you and yours and especially your oldest. Hard time to strike out on her own.

Yes, she is now unemployed and applying for jobs without much luck and no unemployment or COVID money yet. She knows we are a safety net.

Morning Gents! Well, it's now Monday and that means another work week...I guess. This week is nice because for the first half of the week I'm alone in the stockroom. Bill, the guy I work with in the stockroom, has taken the first half of the week off, which leaves me in charge. While I'm perfectly capable of working in a team setting, and prefer it in certain situations, I prefer working alone in this setting because I don't need help picking orders and I just sometimes want to be left alone. So I'm looking forward to the first half of the week. Outside that, I've got nothing. Enjoyed finishing up my project from Saturday. Got lots of TV time and a few beers drunk. My next home project is to plant tomatoes and cucumbers (or whatever DW wants). Think I can hide a cannabis plant in there?

My daughter is missing out on prom and graduation, too. It's a bummer. I know she misses seeing her friends.

By the way, I had said it on FB but not here. She's decided to attend Drexel University in Philadelphia. Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it.

1) When I was in HS, I tried it a couple times. It made me sleepy and hungry. I figured I could just eat and go to sleep and save the expense.

I was looking at Naval Military Intelligence Officer. As tempting as it is to make a crack about Naval Intelligence, I do respect the squids. SWMBO has 2 nephews, and I do by default, that are serving now. One is a Mineman and just made Petty Officer. The other is a Fire Controlman and is in his first year.

I understand, to an extent, but I guess maybe it's because I enjoy my time off...I work to live, I don't live to work. I think I'm more likely to go nuts with almost no downtime than too much. I realize on a ship, options may be limited, but I'm sure I'd be able to find something to do even if not working most of the time.

I enjoy my downtime as well, but the vast majority of my downtime activities require some type of movement and being outside and I don't think I could find enough room on a ship. Good friends of ours had a daughter who was Navy ROTC and she discovered less than 3 weeks into her first 6 month cruise she hated the ocean. Sucks to be her.

The Navy isn't for everyone, I admit, but I loved my time in. It wasn't without it's problems, but I loved my time in. When I got out and got into college, I joined the Air Force ROTC program at UNM in Albuquerque. Turned out it wasn't for me and dropped it.

Been away for awhile and watched the over projection of COVID19. Sadly, no one will admit they just got the projection models wrong, so we will continue longer in lockdown mode. The only impact this has had on me is they closed the tennis courts. Yeah, COVID attaches itself to a tennis ball and travels across the court to my daughter who lives in the same house. Ridiculous.

Regardless, I built a firepit for DW. The picture is 90 degrees off.

Thoughts and prayers for all involved. I heard that the RCMP that was killed had 23 years in. Makes me wonder why my nephew wanted to join the police academy in Randall's stomping grounds where things are always wild.

As far as the oil situation gas is less than $1.50/gallon now. I took the family to the Dairy Queen drive through yesterday for ice cream and we got north into town by going south (We took some eastern KY roads that wound around the mountains and we had never been on them despite living here 10 years. What direction you go has no meaning unlike living in the Midwest where east is east and west is west). Passed an hour at least and got the family out of the house.
