Does anyone else have a problem with automatic gratuity?
I was looking into getting TIW before our trip in Feb, but although it gives you a 20% discount, it also adds 18% gratuity for every meal.
Net 2% discount.

I normally tip 20% or better, I just strongly object to it being decided FOR ME.

In my opinion, that totally defeats the whole point of a "tip" to begin with. If the service is great, sure I'll tip more. If the service is horrible, I should be able to decide to not tip well.

Sorry...didn't mention this in my original post. I think it might have initially arose from a big party scenario because (say for example an office luncheon), people would divide up the check and pay for their part and not leave a tip so the servers got stiffed often. The reason I object to it is because there's no longer an incentive for the server to do a good job. They can give crappy service and still get their guaranteed 18%.

Auto-Grats annoy me mightily.
As a rule, I tip rather generously (because someday I may well be working a job like that), but I rather resent the assumption that the size of the party should guarantee a specific percentage.

I have another rule though which says that if you add the tip in beforehand, then that's all you'll be getting. Had you let me decide...
Chances are 90% or better that you'd have pocketed more coin.

I agree, I hate the automatic tip. Now that being said, we do prepay our gratuities on a cruise but that is more for planning purposes than anything else.

Morning all. Up at 5 AM to take dd to swim practice. Coach is having her kick only while shoulder recovers. I was hoping for some time off.

What a game last night. I went to bed because i had to get up at 5. Why can't these games be in earlier? Are the Dodgers done after that?

You need a DD with a drivers license, believe me it is a good thing. Looking forward to games 6 and hopefully 7 but do agree that the start times, especially on a Sunday night need to be earlier.

I agree, I hate the automatic tip. Now that being said, we do prepay our gratuities on a cruise but that is more for planning purposes than anything else.

Agree with everyone that the prepay bugs me but unlike most here there are too many folk that just don't tip for good service. On DCL they add 15% to your bar orders and then you can add on if you want. I get this as in discussions with the crew people just didn't tip when grabbing a couple of beers and it was killing the workers. DCL also calculates a standard tip for you for housekeeping your dinner serving team but allow you to increase or decrease as you see fit.

Well.... if the service is poor, the manager is darned well going to hear about it.
If the service is good... well, you just lost because I always tip >20%. But that's your choice.
If the service is really good... I'll add to it.

I like Cabo Wabo better than Patron. I haven't seen it at either of the liquor stores I go to. I'm not all that knowledge about tequila. It does say 100% agave. I don't think i have had the aged stuff before (reposado).

2 thoughts.

1) Eliminate the tip. Companies pay servers low wages and we offset with tip. Just charge the price and pay people a different wage. I can always choose to reward/ gift/ be generous.

2) As for TiW, I don't care, and don't look at it as 2% net. I'm going to tip the server anyway. If i have average service, 18% may be a bit high, but would still tip. If i have terrible service, then I'm going to speak with the manager.

As for lack of incentive, I've used TiW and haven't found that it reduced the quality of service. Maybe since the Server knew she was already going to receive an 18% tip, she went ahead and worked hard. I've also used DVC discount which has the 20% discount and some places, with no automatic tip. Still had good service. Tipping outside of WDW may be a different discussion.

I don't agree with tipping bartenders who hand you a bottle of beer. We all do it though. I can understand more for mixing or even pouring a drink. Still, just a standard, liveable wage would be a better alternative.

Yeah, it bugs me, for the reasons you stated. Not enough to really do anything about it, but it does bug me.

Evening chaps, from a spooky London. Been out trick or treating with the kids, stayed in until about 645 and then left a bowl on the step. Kids did pretty well this year, and I was reading the posts above so have decided to deduct 18% from each bucket. Seems fair to me.

On the tip thing, our culture is slightly different, we generally give about 10-12%, and then good gets more. I obviously respect the 18-22% range in the States, but then your restaurant prices are generally lower. I've only got into it once with a waiter where I left him 10% because it was so poor. I then had it out with his manager and him. Again. I couldn't believe the cojones on the guy. I don't really care if its pre-done, but you know that 20% automatic is on its way. There was a huge scandal over here a couple of years ago when a few chains were found to be keeping the tips. I now always ask if they get it if I put it on the cards, if not I give them cash.

Well, the standard has been (in the US) 15%, so 18% is already bumping it past the "normal". As many have said, I typically tip very well because they're often not even paid minimum wage, but I don't like the concept of it not being my choice/decision.

I somewhat agree with the not paying more, but again that penalizes the server not the restaurant/company that came up with that decision. Does talking with the manager actually help if the service is horrible? I was under the impression the 18% was automatic, so too bad, so sad.

I suppose it's just another case of ignorant or uncaring people messing it up for the rest of us (okay, okay, at least I'm caring!)
