6 months off!! Dude, you're living the dream! Well, besides all the jet lag.

The first thing you see are these "trees".

Wow, very striking.

Inside the Cloud Forest greenhouse entrance were some refreshing waterfalls.

That's really cool! You can get all sorts of views of the back side of water.

Let's just say that I may have had statue envy, and move along...

Of course then I wished I could be on safari at Animal Kingdom.

Don't we all.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a few hours.

Top O the Mornin Dads! Happy Friday and hoping that Mathew continues to weaken / head / stay east. To all in the it's path be safe.

Hope I am not jinxing it but it looks like we dodged a bullet. The bands are originating in West Palm and by the time they come here, they are mostly spent. It stayed further east so Ft. Lauderdale and even W. Palm did not get hit as much as was expected. Really feel for the people of Haiti and the Bahamas. Could be us.

Guys in its path, take every precaution. We were lucky because this is one bad boy, close to Andrew in strength but Andrew just cut across Florida. If they tell you to get out, get out. Good luck and stay safe.

Morning all. So, earlier in this week I was flying home from my job overseas. (I actually work in southeast Asia on a month-on-month-off rotation. Yes, it's a bit crazy, but I get 6 months of the year off, so that's the up side.) I usually end up flying some different routes and sometimes have long layovers. This time I had 9 hours to kill in Singapore, so if anyone is interested and as a little diversion for you, may I present:

A Singapore Gardens by the Bay Mini-Trip Report - October 3, 2016

I have been to Singpore a few times before, but not in a couple years. I did most of the main tourist attractions before, but one thing I hadn't done was something called Gardens by the Bay. So I decided that would be a good way to spend a few hours. I hopped on the MRT (train) from Changi airport and about half an hour later I got off at Bayfront station and walked to the gardens.

The first thing you see are these "trees". They call it "Supertree Grove" and for a fee you could go up to the suspended walkway. But I thought I might do that later. Since the temperature was about 33C/90F and very humid, I didn't want to stay outside too much. I did stop long enough to take a bad selfie, just to prove I was there.

On the left is the Singapore Flyer. It seems every big city needs a ferris wheel these days. You can see a little of the city in the background. These gardens are across the bay from downtown Singapore, but you can't see too much of the city skyline from there. On the right are the greenhouses, called the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, where the temperature inside is much more pleasant, which sounded great to me.

There were a few Asian inspired carvings/statues along the way. I believe this is a Chinese dragon.

These carvings seemed a bit more Polynesian in style. I'm not sure what to say about the guy on the right. Let's just say that I may have had statue envy, and move along...

Along the walkways there were plenty of flowers and plants. Unfortunately, I am not a gardener, so I could not fully appreciate them, but they were pretty.

Moving into the Flower Dome, immediately recognized the baobabs. Of course then I wished I could be on safari at Animal Kingdom.

They had an African theme to the flowers along with some artwork.

After spending about 90 minutes walking through the greenhouses, I went back out to Supertree Grove. I considered paying to go up in the walkway, but I figured it would be the same view, just a bit higher up, so I just walked back towards the train station. I did consider going into the Marina Bay Sands casino, which is behind the trees above. But I have never spent much time in a casino and didn't feel like starting now. So I just headed back to the airport and waited for my flight. All in all, not a bad way to spend a few hours.

Seems like an interesting job you have where you get to see a little of the world. I kind of like that idea of getting every other month off, although I'd assume that means that other month is hellish and you're away from home. I'm sure there's good and bad to everything.

Quick update. So far so good, a few bands with wind and rain. This sucker is so big that it will be late tonight before we are all clear. We might have stronger gusts and more rain as it approaches West Palm in a few hours. If you are in the way of this thing, be careful.

Was walking around the neighborhood a bit and got a little PO'ed at one of my neighbors. He didn't put up shutters and was back handedly smug about not doing so. "Saw you put up shutters. I knew it was going to miss us so I didn't bother." Didn't say anything but was thinking, go ahead putz, if that thing took a couple of degrees left, you wouldn't have a house. About 75% of the houses in the neighborhood were on lock down. In hindsight did I need to do it, No. It took a couple of hours and I would rather be safe than face major repair expenses.

Daytona Beach go hit pretty hard and St. Augustine/Jax. is getting creamed. SIL was under a mandatory evacuation in Savannah so she went to friends who live inland.

I knew it was going to miss us so I didn't bother." Didn't say anything but was thinking, go ahead putz, if that thing took a couple of degrees left, you wouldn't have a house. About 75% of the houses in the neighborhood were on lock down. In hindsight did I need to do it, No. It took a couple of hours and I would rather be safe than face major repair expenses.

Daytona Beach go hit pretty hard and St. Augustine/Jax. is getting creamed. SIL was under a mandatory evacuation in Savannah so she went to friends who live inland.

Every neighbourhood has an idiot that thinks he knows best.

What is it that you do that takes you to places like this?

I work in oil & gas. I have a geology degree, so I started working "home" offshore Newfoundland, but still on 3 week rotation. I got the chance to go international about 12 years ago and made that jump. Of course that was before my wife and step-daughter came along, so it's not so easy being away when you have a family. But I've been doing it so long it's all they know. These days it's a bit easier with the internet, Skype, Facebook, Facetime and all that to stay connected. That kind of lifestyle probably seems a bit strange to anyone not in the industry, but quite common for those in oil & gas to be rotating and work away from home. There's a few guys in my neighbourhood who go away to places like Alberta, India, Brazil. It's been different, but I've been able to see parts of the world I never expected to see.

Jet lag is brutal. It's a full 12 hour time shift, so it takes me almost a week to get fully back into a routine.

Yep, I thought about that too. I did take a couple Schwitzer Falls inspired pictures, but they didn't really come out.

Parts of it certainly are. Those gardens were across the bay from the downtown and very green. The downtown itself is pretty much a concrete jungle like anywhere else. But then you get the historic/ethnic districts like Chinatown and Little India, which are really interesting.

Thanks. It definitely is different, but I've gotten used to it over the years. I like the fact that when I'm home, I'm off. It's especially handy in the winter, being Canadian. When we get the big snow storms and I see everyone else out at 6am trying to dig out their cars for work, I just sip my tea and chuckle.

For sure, good points and bad. Today's technology and instant communication does make being away from home a little easier. I still get to see my family everyday, even if it is through a screen.

Six months off is really the only reason I considered this crazy thing in the first place. I enjoy getting outdoors hiking and camping, so the time off allows for some of that.

Good luck buddy. I remember when I had my first Christmas as a store manager. My birthday is Xmas Eve, so I got home at 9PM, fell asleep and woke up Christmas Day night. I'd worked 20 days straight. Evil.
