We are currently ar Disney (scheduled to go home Sunday). Unfortunately my mom is going to have to have emergency surgery today and will not be able to fly home for at least a week.

The Dr.s say we should only be in the hospital for a few days, so looking to see where would be best place to book after.

She's 71 and is having a bowel obstruction surgery, so if there are any places with lower beds, higher toilet seats, sit-in shower etc that would be best, but I'm just not sure where to even start.

Any thoughts or ideas or anyone who has been in a similar scenario. We never would have thought we'd have someone need emergency surgery during our trip and just trying to figure all the logistics out.

TIA for any ideas/experiences.

I don't know about lower beds, but a handicap/wheelchair accessible room should help with the higher toilet, and a stool for the shower (walk-in/roll-in showers might work best). You might look somewhere like Towneplace Suites, as they're set up for longer stays. Sorry about the emergency, and hope your mom does well.

I agree with the above poster that Townplace suites would be a good place and request a handicapped room. They have a little kitchen area in each room with a full size fridge, stove burner with pots and pans so you don’t have to eat out all the time and they have free breakfast in the morning you can grab fruit and yogurt at for later snacks too. I hope your mom gets better quickly.

I don't have any suggestions for places to stay near Orlando, but my mom broke her femur on the Gulf Coast of Florida. if you need to purchase any "equipment" like a walker or a shower chair, check the nearby Goodwill stores. The Goodwill stores in FL seem to have a lot more of that stuff than ours around home have. And at much lower prices than buying at a medical supply store. (Especially if you think she'll only need it for recovery, and not on-going.)

I use Townplace suites often (though not in Orlando) but in other places. They always have handicapped accessible rooms and each room has a small kitchen which is a godsend in a hotel room. There are other types of hotels that have this: Marriott Residence Inn for instance. The trick will be calling around to see if you can get the handicapped accessible room. You can, of course, try it online and specify that.

You could also try a search on and airbnb or VRBO and put in handicapped accessible to see if something comes up. Possibly a small condo or something.

ETA: Homewood Suites is another which is a Hilton hotel.

You can also rent medical equipment like walkers for delivery from Advent Health link

Check places like Drury Inn or TownSuites Handicap room.
Drury Inn is great because it includes a good breakfast and heavy evening snacks.
TownSuites will have a kitchenette in the room to help as well

Oh my, best wishes to your mom for a quick and uncomplicated recovery!

In addition to the suggestions above, I’d recommend talking to the hospital’s discharge planning personnel. Given that Orlando is such a popular tourist destination, your mom is probably not the first patient who has needed local accommodations after discharge from the hospital. They may have other options for her to consider.

I was in this position in 2023. Recovering in a hotel isn't ideal. I really feel for your Mom. I hope the surgery goes as expected & she has a speedy recovery.

The good news is Orlando has many more options for accommodations than the area we were in. I agree that booking a handicap room is the way to go. A walk-in shower is preferable.

Add Home2 Suites by Hilton to the options that have free breakfast & a decent kitchen in the room.

Thank you all for the suggestions and kind words. I haven't slept much in the last 2 days and this was just not something we expected and I had hard time making my brain work this morning lol.

Thankfully she just got out of surgery and it went well. So fortunate for that and hoping there are no complications that pop up. Will be looking into all of the suggestions.

Yes, ask the hospital, they will know.
DH had surgery (only about an hour away) but they told us a couple of places that would work close by the hospital.

We just has a stay at a Home 2 Suites and it was very nice.

I'm happy to see it went well. Best wishes to both of you.

yes and then call the places they suggest DIRECTLY vs. any 800 reservations numbers b/c some keep a small handful of rooms in their back pocket for just such situations that their central reservations are not aware of. also ask if they offer any kind of recovery discount (let them know the hospital referred you). my oldest had surgery a couple of years ago not that far from our home but far enough that we wanted the first night out of the hospital in close proximity 'just in case'. found a large chain through the surgeon's office that was more than ideal (instead of a bed they had a slightly inclined chaise lounge in the 'sitting area' of the room so it was easier to get up off of initially).

best of everything to your mom on her recovery.

Hospitals can often recommend a hotel that gives a "courtesy discount. When I had major eye surgery in Boston, they told us to stay at the Doubletree across the street. They found a room for us (not h/a though) and gave us a low rate on a Friday night in Boston.

Best wishes to your Mom. Hope all goes well!
