I love the long toss idea.
Unfortunately, if he's any good he'll be able to out long toss me before long.
I always caught in little league and I developed a quick but short throwing motion that really wasn't what it should be. Basically I could get the ball from the plate to second with about a half throwing motion. Looking back it was bad, but it was effective for a little league catcher and therefore nobody ever worked with me to expand my range of motion and throw over the top.
When I was a freshman playing on the high school team, I was over 6' tall and I had a coach that felt I was built more to be a pitcher than a catcher and tried to undo several years of bad habits.
After that failed project I locked down first base for the rest of my baseball career.
And actually, when I play softball now, I typically always play 1B.
