DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
So, last HS tennis match of season. The other teams coach decides to cheat and drop her #1 player to #4 spot, where she plays my daughter. This is same coach who last year, when these two played each other, cheated and changed their 3rd set tiebreaker score. Tonight, revenge was served as my daughter beat her #1 player. The coach and player were mad. I was thrilled.
I have but one thing to say...

ATTA BABY!!!!!

Congrats to both you and DD.
Dang, guess that's two things.
:lmao:

Well, I had grits on vacation. So that's a thing I won't be doing again.
Many things about southern cooking I love...
grits ain't one of 'em.
Feels and tastes like I'm eating wet sand and if I have to add all of that stuff to it to make 'em supposedly good, no thanks!

Explanation needed.
nicker = £1 (cockney slang)
a knock = each (it's an old market stall term)
Sorry, that was deep East End. But I do love the alliteration of it.
Dining al fresco? Hope you kept the blinds shut. :lmao:
:rotfl:
Next time Dan, we can tell the wives we are going to the library at 9 PM and head there
::yes:: We could phrase it that we were going to "look up" something. Then we are technically telling the truth.
So unofficially, DW's job interview went extremely well
:thumbsup2 For the win!
DS has two job offers in hand for the summer, both in Myrtle Beach, so it was a good job news day for our family.
:thumbsup2 For the double! Seriously mate, you need to go and buy a lottery ticket. It's almost nailed on.
And they have hairy arms and legs. So I've heard
There's detail behind that. Now you definitely owe me a PM.
I can cope with the arms, legs, just not the chest. No one wants to see a female Tom Selleck with a pair of fun bags stuck on it.

Morning boys, the sun has got his hat back on in the mother country, it's London Councils elections today, and they use the kid's school as a polling station, so they're off. I see a movie and possibly a Five Guys in my near future. Have a great day.

Happy Thursday. Had planned to cut the grass today, but there is rain in the forecast.

So unofficially, DW's job interview went extremely well, the principal has called her and basically told her the job is hers, just waiting to hear from HR now...

DS has two job offers in hand for the summer, both in Myrtle Beach, so it was a good job news day for our family.

Good news for them both. I'd like to take a job at the beach for the summer. Wait, that's live at the beach for the summer.

I have but one thing to say...

ATTA BABY!!!!!

Congrats to both you and DD.
Dang, guess that's two things.
:lmao:

Thanks. Still a satisfying win.

Thanks for more English to America translation as always. I see the SAHD is busy eating burgers and flying to Latvia. Or perhaps, it's just undercover 007. I told DW that she needs to get a better paying job or a 2nd job so I can quit and be a SAHD. She didn't seem very pleased by that.

Thanks! and Thanks! and Five Guys sounds like a treat!

Leaving work early today, mostly to go see DD get inducted into NHS. But then I do have a dentist appointment too.

Top O the Mornin Dads and Happy Friday Eve!
Well...
We were already on the five year plan.
Now it's 5.5 (for want of two classes... unrelated to his major... but I grumble...)

On the up side...
He still doesn't really care that much for alcohol so at least I ain't funding that kind'a foolishness.

That'll be me...

I'll be looking for him to start adding some back to the pot now that we won't be full time, but we agreed that we'd take on the bulk of the debt

A) because we could (and that wasn't true for me).

and
B) it's going to be hard enough to make a go at his chosen vocation while still trying to put bucks away into IRAs and such. Student loans would wreck any possibility of savings, and honestly that would likely lead to a far worse outcome.
Sounds like a couple of similar youths. Mine is the same with alcohol, could take it or leave it but he is looking forward to 21st birthday at EPCOT. He too is on the 5 year plan and I am cover the cost but also that he will need to contribute to year 5. Regardless of who pays for what, the cost of an education has reached illogical levels and loans are just ridiculous. I have several folks who work for me in their mid 30's still having to pay off loans while starting up young families - crazy.
Actually a really good day for me. Finally got around to cleaning and organizing the laundry room. Mission accomplished, I went in the back yard, kicked my feet up and opened a book. Dined al fresco (a salad) and poured a Bourbon and Ginger. Came in to get ready to watch Survivor. One of the better days I've had in a while.
Sounds excellent and I was able to sit outside a bit last night myself.
So unofficially, DW's job interview went extremely well, the principal has called her and basically told her the job is hers, just waiting to hear from HR now...

Looking forward to having summers off together and her having less stress, could be some more fun for the two of us.

DS has two job offers in hand for the summer, both in Myrtle Beach, so it was a good job news day for our family.
Double the wins! Nice to see some good stuff for the family.

'Morning all...
Nothing else to report.

So unofficially, DW's job interview went extremely well, the principal has called her and basically told her the job is hers, just waiting to hear from HR now...
Congrats and may the reduction in stress actually arise.
Of course all teachers are pretty stressed, but any lessening achievable is good.

DS has two job offers in hand for the summer, both in Myrtle Beach,
Cool and Interesting...
Where does he bunk down that way? Friends in the area?

I have to add all of that stuff to it to make 'em supposedly good, no thanks!
So...
You also don't ever eat dishes made with pasta?

nicker = £1 (cockney slang)
That was the one I hadn't herd yet.
Rhyming slang? And if so, what was the word that got dropped from the phrase?

Yeah, it's that last bit there that we're trying to avoid.
I should probably just throw him out of the house and let him figure it out, but I just couldn't do it.

You need to sell it as a feminist argument. Challenge the patriarchal status quo and all that. Female empowerment. And then run for your life.
That's the kind of head long thinking that Custer used successful for a while...
Right up until the time that it didn't work.

.

No, not rhyming slang, just slang. I think it's got something to do with nickels, but i'm not sure. London has slang with money that isn't rhyming.

£1 = A Quid/Nicker
£5 = A Bluey (they are blue)
£10 = An Ayrton (the only rhyming that is used after Ayrton Senna = Tenner)
£20 = A Score
£25 = A Pony
£50 = Reddies (now just generally means money, original £50 notes were red), modern slang is A Hawaii.
£100 = A Ton
£250 = A String of Ponies (never used really)
£500 = A Monkey (many get confused between 250 and 500 on this one)
£1000 = A Grand

You never know, maybe one day £130,000 will be called a Donald.

So there you go. You can now confidently haggle in a London market. Except the hipster serving you your organic flat white won't have a Scooby (Doo) what you're on about.

Hello Guys.

Been missing for a couple of days, I've been looking after a workshop we were running on Tuesday and Wednesday. We are still in the flood zone, in the City we officially reached the 2008 level of 8.36 meters (normal is 1.6 meters). To help you all out that's about 22 feet above normal and 2008 was the worst flood in about 35 years. Communities below us are hitting that 1973 level and they just announced they are closing a major highway that was built to withstand floods up to that level.

DW and I took in an Alan Doyle concert on Tuesday night in the downtown area and came across this guy at an intersection about 2 blocks from the river.

Had a quick read back through and I saw some talk of a nice tennis win (congrats Norm) and something about grits and a wife that can drink a bunch of you under the table. Nice to see not much has changed.

I figured knock was slang for a beer, but I couldn't understand how women's undies factored in to buying a beer. :lmao:

::yes:: We could phrase it that we were going to "look up" something. Then we are technically telling the truth.
More nickers? (Yes, I know it's knickers not nickers)

£1000 = A Grand
I imagine everyone knows about A Quid (although not sure as to why), and Grand is common here as well
Interesting to hear the rest though (and I'd like to know the back story on why 5-Bills would be called a monkey).

Around the area where I live is goes like this (with a number of them being named for who's on 'em)
1 = Buck
5 has no real slang; it's just called a five.
10 = Saw buck (very old slang, that one)
20 = A Jackson (sometimes: A Jack)
50 = A Grant
100 = either A Benji or A Bill (and sometimes also referred to as A Buck, depending on the context)
1000 = Grand (so much for originality)

I expect, given the size of the US, that is done differently elsewhere, but that's how it goes 'round here

You never know, maybe one day £130,000 will be called a Donald.
That, or a Stormy...

Or possibly A Hush

Sorry that y'all are dealing with that.
May the clean up effort be a dang site better handled that what's normal down here.

Never mind watching the grass grow, now you can watch the water rise.

Thanks. We have lots of friends who have to deal with the water in their houses or are completely cut-off. Luckily that isn't us.

This is a yearly event up here so clean up usually isn't too bad, although this is not a normal year. The provincial government opened up their disaster relief program yesterday so people will be able to get some financial assistance as soon as possible. Unfortunately it will be all many people can hope for as most insurance won't cover this.

Thanks. We have lots of friends who have to deal with the water in their houses or are completely cut-off. Luckily that isn't us.
All the best to you and yours mate, hopefully all of those affected get what they need
Or possibly A Hush
Ooo, I like that.
5-Bills would be called a monkey
Its from the colonies, a 500 rupee note in India had a monkey on it. I think its the same for the pony. I knew about the Benjamins, mainly due to P Diddy. Cheers for the others, interesting.
More nickers?
Well, hopefully less knickers, but I guess we have to start somewhere.
I figured knock was slang for a beer, but I couldn't understand how women's undies factored in to buying a beer.
At college, women's undies ALWAYS factored into buying a beer. Not so much now ;)

.

Agreed. State funding decreasing and tuition costs increasing. Here, new building are being constructed, but College president assures us via email that those funds for new buildings have nothing to do increased costs. There are many ways to decrease costs at universities by closing buildings and removing the high salaried faculty administrators. That won't happen though.

You need to sell it as a feminist argument. Challenge the patriarchal status quo and all that. Female empowerment. And then run for your life.

I tried that. She told me to go outside and cut the grass before she used the weed eater on my a$$.

Yeah, it's that last bit there that we're trying to avoid.
I should probably just throw him out of the house and let him figure it out, but I just couldn't do it.
.

Sometimes i want to throw them out of the house now. :lmao:

I don't see much drive in my girls. I'll give my younger a few more years, however, oldest dd is trying to get a summer lifeguarding job at a pool. I tell her that it's not summer, and she should just apply at the restaurants or stores within walking distance. She won't. I don't get it. :furious:

I'm always willing to do a drinking game. It is harder to recover from the next day though.
